Max safe boost? [Merged 10-6]

Yeah, reading around the forums, DSMlink seems to be the favorite. I'll have to get my hands on one this summer. Is there anything I can do with the SAFC in the mean time?

Heya guys,

I did a lot of searching on this subject but because everybody's setup is so different I couldn't find a satisfying answer.

This is my setup in short:
'96 Eclipse FWD
JDM 6 bolt, cyclone intake, 510 injectors (yellow)
big 16g turbo
front mounted intercooler with hard piping
Apexi afc neo
Greddy profec B II boost controller
Walbro 190 pump
Aeromotive FPR
(full setup is in my profile)

I don't have all the items in the list yet but the ones I don't have are on oder so they will come for sure any time soon.

When I got it all installed and running, what boost pressure would be my maximum? Because I don't have all the items yet (missing FPR and Afc Neo) I'm running default boost which is about 0.7bar. When it's all installed I'm planning to go somewhere about 1.2 bar. Would that be safe? Can I go (much) higher? What would limit the boost? The injectors or the turbo itsself?
By the way I'm driving on the so called "Euro 98" pump gas. In my country we have 95 and 98 so I'm using the highest one available at the pump. This is (unfortunately) not the real octane number but some other number. It should be about 92-93 in your measurements.

Hope you guys can help me out. Thanks!

I was wondering what psi I can run safely with this setup. I will be running this without a datalogger or a fuel tuning computer.

small ported 16g turbo
3" turboback exhaust
o2 sensor dump housing
2g ported exhaust manifold
manual boost controller
better intake
intercooler piping
1g bov

To answer your question you can safely run 11 to 14psi with that set up, I wouldn't run anything higher than that. You should really consider at least rewire fuel pump, 190 wally 550cc injectors, and safc, and then tune if you know what you're doing if not have someone that knows what they're doing tune for you so you can safely turn up the boost.

No more than 14 - 15 PSI maximum only if you are using 93-94 Octane. That said you will probably find a common friend we called "Fuel Cut."

Still 15psi. Your stock injectors can only flow so much. At 15psi you will be around 90%IDC. Which is cutting it close. Get something to log, and tune with, and some injecters then you can go to around 18-20 on a good tune. And make sure you re-wire that 190 when you install it:)You do have a boost gauge right.

Ive heard some guys talk that stock internals will handle 28 psi. I wouldnt recommend that all the time on stock internals. Remember with boost your putting more strain on internal parts. more boost can mean stuff blowing apart! I recommend the same...get a data loger and monitor your cars parameters while slowly increasing your boost levels.

If you couldn't find a satisfying answer since everybody's setup is so different, what makes you think we would know? I think a tune is in order to determine what you can run.

28psi on a big16g is a bit out of its efficiency range, take into consideration too that psi and maximum CFM are two different things. run 28psi on say a B16G compared to a GT35R and tell me which one is going to flow more air. You can't just go ahead and say "oh your motor will be fine for 25psi with any turbo".

To the OP: get a datalogger or a wideband to determine how much boost you can run. More so get a logger so you can tune for knock. Until then, keep the boost down.

Why are you boosting the tranny? OMG ROFL

I am by no means a professional on this subject but since when does boost have any effect on the transmission? Unless you mean by producing more power and therefore increases strain...

Im pretty sure thats what he wants to know. :thumb:

Then he should probably ask how much power... boost isn't directly related to power.

Even power isn't directly related to transmission behavior. It will all depend on how it is driven, if he is launching etc.

There may be a max power number for the torque converter(not sure about this though).

Other then that drive it nice and it should last, push it hard and it might break.

C'mon guys you know what he meant, even if it wasn't stated correctly. Boost provides power and in turn thats what he meant, I wish I could tell you but I honestly don't know... Anyone with a boosted automatic have any idea?
