Princeton,
I am fixing my valve tix by taking out the lifters or the auto valve lash adjusters. I have the valves cover off, the engine is at top dead center and I am on 3# cylinder. I got instructions off the net, now with either a tool or a standard screw driver press down on the valve and remove the rocker arm then remove the lifter. Which then I will clean out.
The question is where do I push down, The valve has the spring around is and the metal cap on top of that( forget the name of that) where do I push down with out damaging anything, I will probably have to push a bit so I do not want to damage anything. please help?

Check the Mechanic-In-A-Bottle rack at Wal*Mart, you'll find a few Hydraulic Lifter Quiet products. Try one for a hundred or so miles, it's often that they can help. So can going a grade thicker in oil.

The only real problem with lifter tick, besides the noise is that it can be read as knock and retard the timing. Try restore (v8) with your next oil change. or go with 3g lifters. I know it sound weird but almost everyone in my nedsm club swear by it.

thanks for the replies those who actually read the post and made suggestions. I've been trying to figure out what works for a long time now, when I had the NT, and since i've had the turbo. I have tried the cheap shit, valvoline, and even tried the slick 50 engine restorer for higher mileage vehicles that is about $12 a bottle. Nothing has worked. Have been getting 10-40 oil for oil changes. Other then synthetic oil, what do you guys use? Maybe it's the oil I use.....Pennzoil.

I tried Engine Restore and it didn’t help. I finally bit the bullet and installed updated lifters (Extreme), valve guide seals, and while we were there HKS 264/272 cams too. No more smoking at startup or after idling and the lifer tick is completely gone…

I used some Lucas Oil stuff and lifter tick is less noticeable. That sh*t is extremely thick and sticky, that would explain it. Car start-ups are MUCH smoother now as well.

My lifters come and go as they please. One minute you cant hear them, the next minute thier so loud I have to crouch down in my seat so no one see's me in a car that sounds like shit.Think im gonna give her an oil change and use some thicker oil,and see what good that does.

i picked up my new lifters for like $8 a piece. it was seriously the best mod i have EVER done to my car. wasnt really a mod, but after starting the car up and getting the new lifters lubed up... i have been lifter tick free for about 10,000 miles. i hated sitting at car shows or anywhere and hearing my car tick like crazy around people. it was pretty embarrising. installing the lifters was easy, even I did it!! i am an idiot when it comes to installing anything on a car, but i did these completley by myself. my favorite quote on that dsmtalk site was... "After installing the new lifters i heard something i have never heard before, SILENCE!!!"

O O O O I do, I do !!!!!!!!!!

Just tell them you got solid lifters and your car isnt warmed up yet. :shhh:

A few years ago I got 2nd gen lifters before the 3G lifters were available. Not much better. I used 15-50w Mobil one and an OEM Mitsu. filter and it goes away and comes back randomly. I guess if it really gets to me (when it gets colder probably) I'll try the 3G lifter thing.... I guess ticking lifters is better than having to manually adjust the lash on the valvetrain though.

My car has never had lifter tick, except sometimes at startup, it will be really loud. I turn the car off, turn it back on, and it's completely gone:confused:  Don't know why... I use 20-50w

Try seafoam, I used it on this dudes sebring that was ticking once and it went away permanently.

ive tried usin thicker oil, like 5w-30, and it stopped it completely for the 1st 1,000 miles, then that shit came right back, so i kinda gave up on tryin to fix that shit, it dont bother me any more.

 Um I am useing 10w 40 and it's not syn LOL! but then I have 188,000 miles on my engine too. (although it's geting cold as crap outside I need to put 10W-30 in)

Dude to me 5W 30 is water.

Had lifter tick starting a few months ago, would be really loud when I first start the car in the morning, but would go away after a few min of driving.

I thought it's because my timing belt needed to be changed... i guess not =P

Oh yea, funny thing is it's louder when I have the A/C on, when I turn it off it gets more quiet.

i have the dreaded lifter tick it goes away when i turn the radio up real loud i dont even know its there anymore. and sometimes it goes away when i hold the car at 3k rpms for like 3 minutes in the morning to warm it up.

Did a search on lifter tick and I needed more info.
Using additives like Lucas or Restore any help or should I upgrade with the revised lifters?
I've read good and bad things about all the above but should the upgrade to revised lifters cure it?
How about switching my oil to syn or changing the weight.
Right now I use 20w50 Casrol dino/oil and I have lifter tick when the engine is at running temp....any useful tips/comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

the best thing to do is go with the revised lifters, as the engine restore stuff is only a temporary fix to lifter tick. the revised lifters should definately cure your lifter tick. switching ## oil to synthetic or by changing the weight wont make the lifter tick go away, so i suggest you just go with the revised lifters if u arent on a budget.

If you get a chance to, compare the oil passages between the two lifters. The Revised lifters passages are about three times larger.
