Princeton,
I am fixing my valve tix by taking out the lifters or the auto valve lash adjusters. I have the valves cover off, the engine is at top dead center and I am on 3# cylinder. I got instructions off the net, now with either a tool or a standard screw driver press down on the valve and remove the rocker arm then remove the lifter. Which then I will clean out.
The question is where do I push down, The valve has the spring around is and the metal cap on top of that( forget the name of that) where do I push down with out damaging anything, I will probably have to push a bit so I do not want to damage anything. please help?

IT ticks like crazy when cold and then goes away when the car warms up... What can be done ? Do I have revised lifters already ? I sure ain't changing the lifters so they're gotta be some stuff to cure that problem like Rislone for example. On a side note what spark plug should I be using for a stock application and when they need changing (don't have a manual). Oh and I have searched but came up with only 1g dsm lifter tick problems and almost nothing came up for 2g so please help.

this is a problem with just about every 2g eclipse i have heard but dont have expierence with people posting that two products called Gunk out which you put in before you change your oil and let it idle for 10 minutes and then get some lucas racing oil additive when you put your new oil in after your oil change you can try that.

I've got the same car and I did the lucas trick. Also do a good engine flush before that and that will do that trick. My noisy ass injectors are another story I guess. Time to throw on those 650s that are sittin on the floor :)

Everyone on these forums talks about lifter tick, but there are no diagnosis. Or they do say there's a way, but someone else says thats just covering up the problem. PLEASE tell me how to fix it once and for all! Thanks.

2 reasons for lifter tick
seized lifters or excessively worn lifters
most of our motors will be excessily worn
you could try a thicker oil works for me
i just went from a 25-60
to a 20-40 and now my lifters sound like a city cab niosey as
with the 25-60 not a sound once warmed up.

I hav mobil1 10w-30 in my car and was just put in. It still makes the same noise. Should i use thicker oil and if so than how thick??

-You might want to try 20-50 since the weather is getting warmer, vfaq.com has a write on how to clean the lifters, don't know the age of your DSM, but you might consider upgrading to the revised lifters .

I just started using semi synthetic 5w-30 and after about a week of it I now have lifter tick sometimes for about 20 seconds after start up. I tried switching to 10w-30 but soon im gonna be using 15w-40 my engine burns alot of oil, cuz my valve seals are toast

My friend and I both use Mobil 1 15-50 with Lucas. It works really well. A good oil filter will help keep it away also. I used to use a Fram with the mobil 1 and after about 1000 miles it would come back. But with a Mobil 1 filter, it stays away completely and if not then it will come back at about 2800 miles after change.

Also to clean your lifters/engine. What i do is take off my uicp and spray in MCC. Works really well. I do it b/t every oil change. I do belive that its in the VFAQ and if not, then just type in MCC on here and you will find out how to do it.

I put in a "cupful or two"? of lucas oil stabilzer. Tick was gone instantly.
Seems like that little bit of a "magic" oil product shouldn't do anything
but no more ticking so i'm not gonna complain.

I put half a quart of lucas in my car and the lifters still tick :( only when cold though but If I park it for about 5-10 mins and run again it comes back.

If you want to try bottled hocus-pocus, you might want to try RESTORE. It's another of the zinc/copper concoctions, but for reasons nonsensical to me, DSMs seem to like the stuff. Silver can, available everywhere.

There are no mechanics in cans nor bottles. However, with Motor-Mender Pellets....
OMG

get some revised lifters and call it a day, or ive found that royal purple 10w40 takes great amonth of the noise away, im sure any oil with 10w40 could do this but i just use royal purple.

This worked for me....got to mitsubishi and put one of their genuine filters on it. For some reason their filters have better designs and help the tick a lot....and obviously the revised lifters are a good fix...LOL

I'm not much for additives. I think Bob has a lot of good stuff on his site, but I have some qualms about a straight-cut gear splashing into a pool of oil and any relationship that might have to a force-feed oiling system which has no similar running characteristics. It also irks me that he refers to "entrained" air as "entrenched". But I'm a pissy little snot, so I'll gloss-over that bit and focus on his meaning.

Yes, most oil pumps are gear pumps, but no, they don't splash air into the oil's surface tension by slapping against it. They draw liquid oil from below its surface in the sump, and use the margin between gears to displace it into the oil galleries.

I don't know if entrained air matters much to the lubricant film in a gearbox, but other than the reverse gearset, you still don't have spur gear teeth slapping the oil.

But back on additives, for reasons I have no capability of explaining away, veteran DSM engines seem to respond well to RESTORE from the old Wal*Mart.
