Princeton,
I am fixing my valve tix by taking out the lifters or the auto valve lash adjusters. I have the valves cover off, the engine is at top dead center and I am on 3# cylinder. I got instructions off the net, now with either a tool or a standard screw driver press down on the valve and remove the rocker arm then remove the lifter. Which then I will clean out.
The question is where do I push down, The valve has the spring around is and the metal cap on top of that( forget the name of that) where do I push down with out damaging anything, I will probably have to push a bit so I do not want to damage anything. please help?

Using additives like Lucas or Restore any help or should I upgrade with the revised lifters?
I've read good and bad things about all the above but should the upgrade to revised lifters cure it?
How about switching my oil to syn or changing the weight.
Right now I use 20w50 Casrol dino/oil and I have lifter tick when the engine is at running temp....any useful tips/comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

If it's not cold down there you should honestly change to SYNTHETIC 10w40 oil and it would probably take away the problem. Some oils take it away, some bring it back...

I've heard really good things about "Mobile Oil".

aight guys, i don't know jack about these cars so help me out here. i just bought my 91 TSI and gave it a basic tune up. When the engine is running, there is a ticking sound coming from what sounds like the right under the valve cover. At first i thought obviously lifter tick. My friend has a 2g and his does the same, just not as loud. The weird thing is, when i rev the engine over 2800 rpms, it goes away and kinda turns into a whining noise....Is this just lifter tick? or is it something i sould worry about?

Thanks for the help guys.......

newbie questions belong in the newbie section.

id normally just say search and learn about lifter tick, but i forgot my flame suit.

sounds like you have it. not a big deal. lifter tick is fairly normal in dsm's, it doesnt affect performance at all, unless its a rediclous amount of lifer tick.

theres quite a few solutions to lifter tick if it bothers you that much. ill let someone else do the searching for you though.

Yes you have it. It won't kill anything, it's just annoying.

PS You're lucky, you caught dsmturboawd on a good day. :p

EDIT: Bring your car down to Atwater sometime. I want to check it out

hah, no kidding.

wow ok sorry, remind me not to ask questions anymore......

listen, you asked a newbie question in the advanced performance section. i was as nice as i could be and helped you by answering your question. if you want to come off as a dick, thats all fine and great. just be one to someone else.

so, when would you like your reminders?

look man, i don't know who u think u are coming off as mister high and mighty here....if anyone is being a "dick" here, its you. all i did was ask a simple question that didn't require a smart ass reply. if you had a problem with my question, then you didn't have to reply! have a nice day.....

p.s. thanks for the help leet, as soon as i get my clutch in i just might come down there.......

what!?!?

point out where in my first post that i was being a dick, giving smart ass comments, and acting like i was "mister high".

About a year ago I installed turbo camshafts. Immediately after I stared getting valve tick from the intake side. The valve tick is still bad and it only happens when the engine is up to temp. I'm doing a head rebuild soon but I'm not sure if the problem is the camshaft or the lifter. I noticed the camshafts had a few minor rust spots but I figured it would wear off right away.
What should I do?

thanks

this is the problem with my 92 laser rs-t
:laser:

for a while the car made an annoying lifter tick sound no matter what, mostly at idle dissapearing at higher rpms... then it went away!?!? yesterday I was doing a few passes for a friends new video camera, and when I pulled back into my driveway to let the car cool down after 4 passes or so at WOT, tha damn tick is back:mad: . sounds like it is coming from the area of my timing belt so i am assuming that it IS lifter tick? hope I'm not wrong:barf:

anyway, is there an easy or economical fix for this little pecadillo? It drives me nuts, makes the car sound broken to everybody but those of us who are familiar with dsm's... "what's that noise, your car must be a piece of crap man" I'm damn tired of hearing that shit!

are you sure it's lifters ticking? could be valves too. When my valves were ticking I added 1 qt of mobil1 atf and drove the car for 300 miles before changing the oil, that got rid of the valve tick.

Changing the oil always seems to work for me. When they start making noise it may be time for a change.

my car had a bad ticking then i put in 10-30 oil and its thicker and instantly the ticking went away, but changing the oil is only temporarily solution in a few months it will come right back, i ordered new lifters for my car anyway, you can get them for 8 dollars a piece you need 16 of them

I would change them if i were you

er.... the only part of the valvetrain that'll produce tick is the lifters. :|

Hi,
Just wondering if my low oil pressure could be contributing to my valve lifter tick(I assume that's what it is) because of lack of circulation. My AT Laser turbo usually has oil pressure around the halfway mark (the beginning mark of what I assume is the ideal range) when cold, then drops to stay around the very first mark, whick would be like the E on a gas meter. Is this abnormally low and could it be a sign of a bigger problem? Spun bearing or anything?

Thanks for your time and help
Jeff Mason

Not sure if that level is low or not (I think it is tho when it drops to the "E mark" like you said), but I know that low oil pressure can cause lifter tick.
