Princeton,
I am fixing my valve tix by taking out the lifters or the auto valve lash adjusters. I have the valves cover off, the engine is at top dead center and I am on 3# cylinder. I got instructions off the net, now with either a tool or a standard screw driver press down on the valve and remove the rocker arm then remove the lifter. Which then I will clean out.
The question is where do I push down, The valve has the spring around is and the metal cap on top of that( forget the name of that) where do I push down with out damaging anything, I will probably have to push a bit so I do not want to damage anything. please help?

Lifter tick was a pain in the ARSE on my 2g. I ended up running a can of seafoam through it and then changed the oil with High Milage Natural Oil and some lucas Lucas. It cleaned it up really well for me. It didn't get rid of the tick entirely- but it did clean it up a LOT.

Everyone's going to give you a million and one "possible" fixes, this is just one that worked for me. And at about 20 bucks to do it (8 bucks for lucas, 3 for seafoam, 9 for oil and filter) it's well worth a try. Plus it's fun looking like 007 for a few minutes =P

I've got a problem, and I was hoping someone could help me with it. The Other day I decided to see how fast I could get my 91 TSI. I got up to about 120, and I heard a boom come from the engine. I look down and see that the temperature guage shows that I'm overheating. It didn't go in the red, it stopped right before it. I also see that I couldn't go past 120 mph. It get off the road and turn the car off for about 5 minutes. I start it up again, and I hear what sounds like lifter tick, so I thought it was no big deal. I go to take off, and the car feels real sluggish. Then when I hit full boost, the car just backfires really loud. Now it seems that the lifter tick is getting louder because I can hear it over my exhaust, which is only the downpipe. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hey all i just purchased a brand new head with 1mm oversized valves and all those goodies, well i notice that even after my car is completely warmed up i still get a nice lifter tap....its not to bad but i was wondering why its like that even with a head that has 1k miles on it???

Are big hole or new style lifters in it?

i dont know what kind are in there, i payed 800 for the head so who knows whats in there, but like i said thou, its brand new, why would it still be doing this...

it does not matter how much you paid for it, how many miles are on it, or who built it if it has the old style lifter it will tick.

to get rid of the tick new style big hole lifters MUST be used.

simple as that...

ok i guess im going to have to do that then, now ive heard alot of dsm's that have that noise, is that something i should be concerned about or is it a preference that ppl wouldnt want that noise so they get those different lifters

Question,
I searched already, and i usually ran 10w30
i installed 10w40 by mistake, and now i sometimes have a low rpm lifter tick, i can rev it, and it goes away, is this from the oil or unrelated,

its thinner right?

If anything its heavier and will protect up to a higher engine temp....it shouldn't do anything but lower the amount of tick....you may just be noticing what's already there b/c you realized you installed a different oil and you were listening for things pre-existant. :D

ok in the morning when i start up my car, eather its dead cold out or its fairly warm ill always get lifter tick for a few seconds, then it goes away, but, the it will come back when my motor is warmed up completely, then it will go away, then come back, or it will just go away completely, i was wondering what could cause this, the head has about 3k on it, all new parts

the hydraulic valve lash adjusters are supplied with motor oil via a tiny hole that cold thick oil can't get into. You could oil change with a thinner oil for the winter & see if that helps, but as long as the motor heats up fast & the noise goes away quickly & you don't gun the motor while it's cold--you should be OK.

OK, I've got a 97 GST w/ 86k miles. The problem is when the engine is cold in the morning when i start up if i try to move the car or make the revs go higher than idle I get lifter tick until the engine is fully warmed up. Im wondering if this is going to start getting worse and im going to start getting lifter tick even when the engine is hot? Anybody had the same problem? What should I do? Thanks
T.

Lifter tick has a lot to do with the oil you use and the filter as well. I get lifter tick when I use anything besides mobile 1 synthetic. I'm sure there are other synthetic oils that will do the same thing, but since mitsubishi, Toyota, Dodge all use this same oil in their vehicles and you can pick up 5 quarts for $19 at walmart I like to use it. Also use a OEM oil filter because they have a one-way valve in them that keeps oil from draining back into the oil pan...to prevent dry start up. I have a 1g and ask for the 3000 gt filter because it's a lot bigger and they are universal between 1g, 2g, and 3000gt's. If that doesn't work I've used "magic mystery oil". I'm normally not for these types of products like "slick 50" and the sort, but magic mystery oil has cured lifter tick on my car when I was using non synthetic oil. Good luck.
