Princeton,
I am fixing my valve tix by taking out the lifters or the auto valve lash adjusters. I have the valves cover off, the engine is at top dead center and I am on 3# cylinder. I got instructions off the net, now with either a tool or a standard screw driver press down on the valve and remove the rocker arm then remove the lifter. Which then I will clean out.
The question is where do I push down, The valve has the spring around is and the metal cap on top of that( forget the name of that) where do I push down with out damaging anything, I will probably have to push a bit so I do not want to damage anything. please help?

I'd just like to add that this is against the rules also it's not like it says this right above the box you type your reply in

I have a very annoying lifter tick usually at low rpm's 2500k-2900k. Whenever i start the car wether cold or warm, i never hear it. It only happens when im in that low rpm range. Ive done my search around and notice alot of people say it has to do with the type of oil or filter you use. I had a new engine (it has about 20K on it) installed by a mechanic shop about 2300 miles ago. I believe the shop used 10W-30. However, i was leaking a little bit of oil and i went out and bought Mobil 1 Full synthetic 10W-30. Ive put about 1 1/2 quarts of it ever since because my valve cover had a crack in it and would leak alot of oil, also the turbo seal was blown so that was another reason alot of oil leaked into the exhaust. Anyways, i dont remember if i had a lifter tick when i first brought my car home from the shop when the new engine was installed. For that time period, i didnt notice a lifter tick at all. I was just wondering, from the symptoms ive described, what suggestions would u all give me on this issue. What kind of oil, filter, or any lubrications or engine restores? What would be my best bet. By the way, the engine is a 99 4G63 2.0 Turbo.

Fisrt off, no replies so far cause it has been covered SO many times..

Ok it's pretty common at lower RPM's because the oil is not being pumped all the way to the top of the motor that well at lower RPM's. Another thing to keep in mind is that after the car has been running a while, the oil gets thinner, and that makes it ap at lower RPM's as well.

You may have a "new engine", but how new? You see the lifters are known to tap like that up through 1999. If you get the newer generation lifters, that would probably solve it. About $200 in parts, and a few hours of labor.

If you want a band-aid fix, then i recomend that you add one quart of Lucas Oil treatment at your next oil change (you substitute one quart of oil). This would probably quiet it down pretty good. And just stick with 10W30 oil. The Lucas is $10, about $20 for synthetic.

If you're gonna be experimenting with different oils and additives, might just wanna stick to dyno cause it's expensive swithing out tryin different stuff.

Let me know how it works out.

Oil additives are just temporary bandaids and in some cases affects the other pieces of the engine (crank bearings, rod bearings, oil pump, etc) in ways you don't want. Fix it right the first time. Replace the faulty lifters with the new revision.

Don't do it half-assed or you will get half-assed results.

besides annoying... what damage will the faulty lifters have?

Worst case? They seize, hang the valve and throw the roller, destroying your head, your valves, your cams, and denting your pistons.

Most of the time? Severe phantom knock which severely retards timing.

Hey guys,

I did a search and looked at quite a few threads, but I'm not sure whether or not this noise that JUST started on my Talon is lifter tick.

Both yesterday and today, the first time I started her up each day, a fairly loud "clicking" noise was present under the hood for only a few seconds after starting the car, and then it instantly disappeared. Yesterday was the first time I've ever heard it, but with the hood closed I actually thought it was one of my belts since I had been having some squeaking in the morning with them. And the noise stopped so suddenly, I thought a belt had snapped or something so I popped the hood just to make sure everything was fine. :)

But today, as soon as I fired it up I heard the noise again, so I popped the hood and took a look and the noise seemed to be coming from the top of the head cover right in front of the injectors. Once again, the noise stayed around for 15-20 seconds and then instantly stopped. When I start the car warm it doesn't happen at all, and it so far never happens while driving no matter where my RPMs are at.

So is this probably the first sign of lifter tick? I'm doing an oil change tonight, so if it is, is there anything I could/should do to head this off before it gets worse? Thanks and I look forward to your opinions.

Update: It's been over two hours since I got to work so I ran back outside and started her up again. No noise whatsoever. Just thought I'd post this if it helps anyone who can give me a diagnosis. :thumb:

ya most likley lifter tick - thats pretty fast for it to go away, it must not be that bad.
it normaly takes untill the oil is heeted and thinner to go away.

a guy who wants to sell me his gst tells me that his car has the infamous "lifter tick" which he sais that almost all dsm's have. Is this a serious problem and should be avoided or is it common??? He sais the car doesn't have any other issues.

Lifter tick is caused by a few things (1 being that your lifters are dirty and need to be removed cleaned and reinstalled, and then they work fine or (2 after trying (1 you still get the dreaded tick it means the lifter has collapsed and needs to be replaced because it won't hold it's prime. All can be done by you following the easy Vfaq here good luck.

I heard that 1gen experience most lifter ticks but is it possible for a 2gen to experience it? And by the way, lifter tick seems hard to fix. Is it really???
Are there any possibilities if a car makes ticking noises that that's a sign of crankwalk?

no thats not a sign of crankwalk. ive seen almost every dsm get lifter tick wether or not it was a 2g or a 1g. the only way to get rid of it is to get revised lifters.

My lifter tick was getting horrible, and I do have the revised lifters. You really should consider taking them out and cleaning them. It's very easy, but MAKE SURE you stuff paper towels down into all the holes. I managed to drop a HLA down into my head.
I soaked mine in break parts cleaner overnight, then hosed them out real good the next day, compressed them and emptied them, and then dried them with compressed air. My car sounds just like it should now. There is a vfaq on cleaning them, you might try that.

Well its been a craze for the most part, MANY people have had success using Xado additive to their engines over at the 3000GT forum. I was wonder if ANYONE here has tried it on our engines?

Well my new lifters of some year and a half have begun to tick again and I ran into this site I am considering using it..but first I'd like to try to engine flush the motor and see if that works.

My 6 bolt loves the Mobil 1 synthetic for the lifter tick. Try finding it in the larger 5 or so quart size, its cheaper.

I have a badcase of lifter tick going on and I was wondering if putting new lifters in my car will solve the problem?? Any suggestions on what lifters to get also?? Thanks guys.
