Princeton,
I am fixing my valve tix by taking out the lifters or the auto valve lash adjusters. I have the valves cover off, the engine is at top dead center and I am on 3# cylinder. I got instructions off the net, now with either a tool or a standard screw driver press down on the valve and remove the rocker arm then remove the lifter. Which then I will clean out.
The question is where do I push down, The valve has the spring around is and the metal cap on top of that( forget the name of that) where do I push down with out damaging anything, I will probably have to push a bit so I do not want to damage anything. please help?

Mitsubishi filter or Mopar filter?? I'd think new fram filters would be better with 10+ years of technology would they not? My lifters tick but I was going to slam some 3g lifters in but from what 3g engine???? 2.4L and roughly how much are they??
Its the 3rd generation of lifters.

The oil hole is bigger in diameter allowing better flow and decreasing the chance of them getting stuck from being dirty.

THanks for all the replies i thought this would be good if we had a lot of people with good ideas and showing they worked or not for people to try.

How much should I expect to pay for some revised lifters (since they're the best, right?)? And where should I get them? The dealers usually overprice everything they got.

1. I had lifter tick constantly, even after the car warmed up.

2. I used a can of Restore (little silver can at your local auto store) and an OEM Mitsu oil filter
together with an oil change. (Mobil 1 synthetic)

3. Lifter tick is gone!! Has not come back. Did this over 2 months ago.

4. P.S. - my brother did this on his car and...........no more lifter tick!!

It really works. :thumb:

This is what I did, except that Im using a Pennzoil PZ109 filter. No more lifter ticks.

Restore does work.

On my last oil change (last Sunday 5/15), I used Mobil 1 5W/30 Synthetic. I always suspected the 10W/30-syn to be too thin. I dont have any lifter tick at all.

Go search on ebay just put in mitsubishi lifters.
Like 140 bucks or so.

mitsu filter is much better for lifter tick on my car than the standard purolator

I only get it inititally, once the car is hot it never ticks.

The ticking stops faster with Mobil 1, but I got tired of paying for it, so I just use Mobil cheapo oil now.

All i want you to reply with is:
1. Did YOU have Lifter tick? not your friend or your cousin or whoever. YOU!
Well, my '93 car's engine did, does that count?
2. What method did you use? (cleaning, replacing with revised, etc)
A can of RESTORE.
3. Did it cure it?
Seemed to on my '93. And it bugs the hell out of me that it did, because I know all that stuff is just CRAP.

Ok i replaced the lifters and it barely(but slightly) made an improvment.
Im usuing castrol gtx 10w40 and a mitsu oem filter.
What oil should i try next. ive never used syn in this car and it has 80k so that make sme nervous.

are You ABSOLUTELY sure that now it is just lifter tick.Julia's had the same problem, but to Me it sounded like from #1 front of the head.I tried EVERYTHING.All the suggestions failed, the only thing that fixed it was Her new engine(actually even tried a new Head on it).

All i want you to reply with is:
1. NO. sometimes i lifter and some times I get a tick but never both together... :D

97 Tsi 106k miles 2 7 bolts and just put in a 6 bolt... head is oem still never touched (except to bore the studs out to 12 mm), after the mitsu filter.. no tick, going on 500 miles and jsut oil changed filter changed again....before... pronounced tick

2. Mitsu filter
3. Yes

4. Don't need no lifters

I just installed 3rd Gen lifters when I did my FP2's
Phantom knock is gone.
No more lifter tick at all.
The openings are huge on mine.

I bought them through:
Prime Automotive
888-855-9712
I believe I talked to Bryan
$8.65 a piece. Total=$138.40

They also sell numerous other things...gaskets, etc

ok i lied haha
drove it a little more and then parked it, came out the next mornig and started it no lifter tick at all and it hasnt started yet.
so i was just too impatient i think its gone now. it feels faster for some reason?
maybe im imagining things.

I have a 97 Talon that had lifter tick. I tried cleaning them and re-installing them and they worked great for 6 weeks then the tick came back with a vengeance. I bought a new set of lifters from a friend and installed them ....not a tick since then.

I use Mobil 1 10w30 and a Mopar FE230 oil filter.

you have to let the lifters pump up! you should not even drive it or rev it up just let it idle till it stops(this goes for new lifters) or you will pop a rocker off ,and it feels faster because the lifters are actually opening your valves all the way instead of collapsing

Ha, funny you should mention this...

dealer took the car in to look at it over 3wks ago,
said the parts would be in the following wednesday,
the parts didn't come in...said they would be in the 2nd wednesday,
they didn't come in today, said tomorrow on 3rd wednesday

1___Yes I HAVE lifter tick
2___Currently Replacing attempting to have them replaced
3___Unsure
4___Replacing mine with third generation Mitsu. lifters (If that means anything)

Ya i had it. I had it bad when using Mobil 1 synthetic. So i switched to Pennzoil synthetic and i now have noen at all.

Who said i didnt?

I primed them by takin out the engine fuse. did that for about 30 seconds.
THen i started it and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes, then i drove it for about 100 miles.
Then i brought it home and it was still doing it, THen next day i put more miles on it and it was gone.
THe people i havbe talked to only had to put like 50 miles on it and it went away so thats why i was worried.

From what I can tell lifter ticks are typical of our cars. Mine is no different. I just changed the oil (Mobile 1 10w30) and it seems to do it worse when it is idleing, then revign it usually gets it to go away. I tried putting in some valve medic ("stops noisey lifters fast") it didn't help and in fact todya it ticked more, even started while I was driving. SHould I chaneg the oil to get that stuf out? I ahte to do that as it is just about brand new oil and filter. The car has 120,000 on it, shoudl I try 5w30? Thanks

my car does the same thing. the reason u cant hear it when ur driving, is because the sound from the higher rpms of the engine are louder than the tick. there is a reason our engines are interference engines. the valve sometimes can just tap each other enough to click, and sometimes its just the lifter making noise. jus pray u dont blow a timing belt. cause then you will have bent valves, and a whole lot of problems. the only way i know of to get rid of that, is to tear the head apart, get the head serviced, then reseat the valves, tighten everything down, the lifters, rockers, springs retaining clips. this should take care of it.

everytime i hear people say that they have "loud" lifter noise i kinda worry for them. I had "loud" lifter tick and i just dismissed it as that. It would go away for a little while if i revved the engine. Turns out i had one of the cams off time by 2 teeth. Found this out when i broke a valve. Replaced what broke and when i put everything back together like before i put a strait edge to the cams and they were off. I redid everything, hated fixing a piston and replacing the head, and now she runs stronger and is really quiet. I still have the 1G lifters but i almost have to raise the hood to hear them. Check that timming. and do it as stated in VFAQ. mine looked perfect by eye balling it but were way off when i put the strait edge to it!! Live and learn. Hope this saves someone else
