Princeton,
I am fixing my valve tix by taking out the lifters or the auto valve lash adjusters. I have the valves cover off, the engine is at top dead center and I am on 3# cylinder. I got instructions off the net, now with either a tool or a standard screw driver press down on the valve and remove the rocker arm then remove the lifter. Which then I will clean out.
The question is where do I push down, The valve has the spring around is and the metal cap on top of that( forget the name of that) where do I push down with out damaging anything, I will probably have to push a bit so I do not want to damage anything. please help?

I guess slight lifter tick is common on the 4g63 motor at startup ? I had my head rebulit a few months ago and get ticking at startup. I used lucas oil stabalizer in my previous 95 gs-t and this helped. I have also read and it worked for me to reduce lifter ticking by using the OEM oil filter :dsm:

Definately use lucas. I have used this in all my vehicles and its just plain awesome.

I did the same cleaning method on the 2g lifters.... it helped for about two weeks then it was back to normal ticking. I just decided to use the non ticking lifters this time. As far as checking to see if a rocker arm is loose, it looks like you are going to be pulling the valve cover back off. If a rocker arm is loose i see it coming out then staying were it is suppose to be.

I know injectors are suposed to tick, but all of mine tick so loud, it sounds like my valves are broken(I KNOW THEY ARE NoT) why do they tick so loud, it makes my car sound like crap. :barf: :notgood:

Out of curiosity, since I have yet to fix this problem, would these lifters be available at the dealership? I assume they would be, coming as a stock part on a recent car, but you never know. If I can get them at the dealership, I might just do that.

isn't this ticking problem something that the knock sensor will pick up? replacing them with revised lifters was on my agenda to prevent "phantom knock". was i mistaken?

what do u recommend i should get for new lifters, wat are the best ones out

wow seems like a lot of dsmers have this problem, after reading through some threads i came up with this. Doesn't really hurt anything, if you want to fix it completely get 3g lifters or if you want a cheap way to fix it (band-aid) can of engine restore

Get the 3g or revised lifters they have a larger bore hole to allow more oil and eliminate the lifter tick. you can find them on ebay or at sbr :thumb: and follow the install on vfaq all you have to do is take off your vavle cover and pry the rockers away from the lifters.

Wow. Search for lifter tick or check the tech articles. Covered a bazillion times.

But to answer your question, 90% of people get to swapping them out if cleaning them, changing oil weights, using lucas doesn't work. I just swapped mine on friday. Sweet silence!

this is normal for an occational cold startup. the oil has to work its way up to the lifters and it takes longer when it is cold becuase the oil is more gooey and needs time to move around. you arent hurting anything by having this happen as it is a common problem on most elderly vehicles/any DSM. i use a 5W-30 oil and happens very seldom on a winter start-up. good luck man. :thumb:

Have you done a search yet? This is one of the oldest and most common issues that these cars have. The best fix is to replace them with the revised lifters that you can get @ www.slowboyracing.com There are other possible fixes found at www.vfaq.com

Remember to use the search, you'll find a lot of info that way that 9/10 will help you with your issue.

By the way, they are hydraulic lifters and not adjustable.
