Princeton,
I am fixing my valve tix by taking out the lifters or the auto valve lash adjusters. I have the valves cover off, the engine is at top dead center and I am on 3# cylinder. I got instructions off the net, now with either a tool or a standard screw driver press down on the valve and remove the rocker arm then remove the lifter. Which then I will clean out.
The question is where do I push down, The valve has the spring around is and the metal cap on top of that( forget the name of that) where do I push down with out damaging anything, I will probably have to push a bit so I do not want to damage anything. please help?

any idea on worst case secenario ??? nice engine by the way

Worst case scenario would be that 3 of your pistons have gaping 2 inch holes in them and one of them is missing, due to your spark plugs firing lasers out of the electrode instead of a little spark.

I'm j'k with ya, I'm really not sure what it could be, the description you gave wasn't too in depth. Go ahead and do a little test with that stick, give it some gas by opening the throttle in the engine bay when listening as well to possibly help narrow some things down.

Let us know what you find.

P.S. my engine bay is much prettier now.:sneaky:

That pic is missing a turbo

Check for exhaust leaks first. Often times a leak is misdiagnosed as a rod knock or lifter noise. Better safe than sorry.

Definitely check that. Evertime I start my car my friends ask "You got some lifter tick there?" Nope, just a big gap between my exhaust manifold and head :(

where would be the most commin place for an exhaust leak ???

At the exhaust manifold gasket, the manifold-to-downpipe gasket, or the gaskets on either side of the cat. The gaskets further down than that might leak too, but they wouldn't be as noticeable as the ones listed above.

I would start with the manifold and downpipe gasket as I would think that a cat gasket leak would be hard to confuse with lifter tick, its pretty far away.

could it be that i need a new cat ???
when i got the car the bottom part of the cat's heat shield was comming off so i tore it off so no drag would occur

If the sound is coming from the engine bay, it is highly unlikely that thats the cause

Pretty simple check. With the car running have someone block off the muff (obviously use a rag ;) ). If there is a leak you will hear the hiss coming from the leak. Do it when it's cold and nothing has expanded yet.

ok heres the deal i used a long cubed ruler worked wonder to hear where it was comming from DSMcrazy3 had the good idea i put the stick to it and but the other end of my ear up to the pole and what to my surprise alot ticky ticky :D so i guess it is the all might lifter tick of doom i will be dealing with will probably order them this week and get to work well can anyone tell me what page to find the replacement of these in the haynes/chiltons manuals would be much appreciated and thanx for all you help ROFL

Who says you need to replace them? I would throw some SeaFoam (available from Autozone or Advance) in the crank case, following the manufacturer's suggestions of course, and see what happens. If anything, you might need to disassemble the head and clean everything, but you shouldn't need to replace the lifters unless you're upgrading them.

On my car 2g gsx, there is the quiet lifter tick but the last few days there has been a strange noise. It almost sounds as if one lifter is ticking really loud. Audible on the outside of the car 10ft away loud. However it will do it for a minute then go away and come back, not always happening at start up either. I am not sure if this is what it is but if not it is coming from the intake side of the engine and noise speed changes with rpms. My oil is Mobil 1 and I have 96k miles. Previous owner replaced the timing belt at 60k but I am unsure of what was done to the balance shaft? If this is a lifter is it safe to drive in this condition? thanks for the help as I am really confused what this is.

yeah, it's the lifters. It's safe to drive around with lifters ticking. Don't worry about it. But after a while it gets really annoying.

You can clean them (I did the same) and get rid of the tick. It's a pretty simple procedure. Or you can get some revised lifters.

Lifter tick is safe to drive on just bothersome. Just clean or invest in big bore lifters, cause you'll want to anyway if you plan on upgrading the turbo, to see if that's solves your problem. Is it a loud tick or a knocking sound? Because if the lifters aren't the problem it sounds like a spun rod bearing.

I had bad lifter tick a while back. It would tick hot or cold. I read it could be related to the type of oil and filter used on the car. With that I tried a few different combos. Now I have been using Castrol Syntec and a Bosch oil filter for the last year and a half or so with absolutly no lifter tick. I am not saying this will fix your problem but it was a soultion to mine.

My 90 GST floated some lifters before. I just bought a new set, was cheap, and fixed the noise, but then again, mine floated alot more than one, and the car had little power.

i had lifter tick for awhile but now i use castrol syntec as well and it has completely 0 lifter tick. Mine was pretty loud before i changed oils also. Now there isnt any no matter if it is 40 degrees or 90. Give it a try without a doubt.

I think my car might have some lifter tick, but I'm not sure, could someone tell me if you think its lifter tick of something else. some it kinda ticks at idle, but if I'm in the car i dont notice it until i start gettin rough with the trottle. It's fequency it directly related to rpm, the loudness is related to the amount of load on the engine(how much i got the gas down), valve tick sounds right but no matter what i read and check i keep feeling pulled to the injectors. And this sound is enough to embarrass me with pasengers asking what the hell that noise is. Btw i recently changed oil w/o ANY difference.

Like i just read posted in another thread you might want to check your crank pulley if you have never replaced it. You can tell if you look down towards it and rev it up a little you may see it move sideways or you can pull your wheel off and see if it cracked around the rubber.
