Is my block okay?

Recently tore apart a 6 bolt motor that was running fine, only to find a badly bent rod. It showed signs of rubbing on the rod but at first glance I couldn't notice anything. After looking more, i noticed it wore a grove in the very bottom of the cylinder the width of the rod. I know the piston doesn't go down that far so I'm wondering if I can still use the block?

Motor is at my brother's place so I'll have him go out in a few and snap a pic. If all else fails, I have a spare black that had a hole burned in a piston and slightly scored the wall. Anyone know the average price to have a machine shop press the pistons on and off the rods and bore and hone a block?

Here's some pics.

That's not a bad price at all. I was hoping to save the spare to build another engine. I have 3 heads and intakes just laying around. I'm just curious if there is a reason I can't run this block as it is right now with a good hone and some new rings and pistons.

IT likely won't need to be sleeved. That notch at the bottom of the cylinder won't hurt anything if there are no cracks in that cylinder. The piston doesn't even do down that far.

Awesome. Thanks for the help. I'm strapped for cash so a good hone and some rings will have to do for now until I can build the other block.

+1 so long as you don't plan to go stroker or anything, you'll be fine. The machine shop should definitely check for cracks in that area, but if none are found I would just leave it be.

That area had to be notched a little on my stroker build. You'll be fine since it doesn't go down that far. Just make sure you clean the block out well. That missing metal would have had to gone somewhere.

I'm not gonna take it to a machine shop. I'm gonna hone the block myself. I'm replacing all bearings with ACL race bearings and I'm gonna use a fel pro composite with ARP head studs. I'll be sure to clean the block real good before assembling it.

All pistons were fine in this block as I was driving the car with mild boost up until I removed the engine for my GSX build. Wouldn't even have known about the bent rod had I not taken the engine apart.

Im not as much a DSM guru but I have built several extreme motors.

I would say as long as there are no cracks in the block or bore you should be fine.
Its very common when we build strokers that we have to relieve that area of the cylinder to allow clearence for the crankshaft and rods.

Just have the the bore checked that it is still round and not "egg" shaped.

You do need to get new rings... FYI
