Interior Water Leaks threads [Merged 1-7] leak leaking hatch sunroof drain drains

As cars age the weather seals begin to dry out. compress and shrink. That creates areas for leakage. Water can leak in somewhere and move across body channels and pool on you floor. You need to isolate the leak. Start by check the obvious spots first, the glass seals - roof hatch ,rear hatch glass and side glass channels. Also check the roof rail drain vents (above the door pillars). Try the hatch and door seals. Pull up your carpet and padding (you will need to let that dry out anyway before it starts rusting under there). Pull the rear seats if needed, also remove the rear side panels if you need to and start running water over the car. Use a steady blast from above the car and forward (get a ladder if you need to) also from the sides. You are trying to simulate driving in the rain. Drive it to a local DIY car wash and use the high pressure wand if you need to, taht puts out a good blast. Does it leak when the cars sits in the rain or just when you are moving? Tom

Ok so today i went to change my taillight bulbs and when i lifted the hatch a good amount of water started falling into my trunk. I looked up and it was coming from the plastic hatch cover on the left side. So i took it off and the whole underside of it was wet, a good amount of water too. Now it rained like all hell today, so a LITTLE bit of water i could understand, but it was a good coffee cup worth. I didn't see anything wrong, but i'm not exactly sure. Any things i should check that i don't know of. I looked at all bolts and the wing and don't see anything wrong...WTF WTF

How did you clear the hole?

One of mine is clogged, no leaking but I want to clean it out just in case.

any pics of hatch drain

Just open your hatch and look at the each side of the car where the hatch meets the car. There will be one hole in each side. If you just open the hatch and look along the side of the car not the hatch you will see it. Just stick something in there to clean them and then pour some water to make sure it is draining down and out the bottom.

Hey guys. I live in OR where it rains a lot, and when it does for some odd reason my floos on the passenger side and also behind the passenger side floors always get soaking wet. I don't see any window leaks, but its only the passenger side of the car where the floors get soaked. Also in addition to the floor leaks most of the time it rains hardcore, the front windshield will fog up on the inside of the car, this is probably due from the moisture coming from the floors. Should i bring my car into a body shop or how can i fix this, really irritating when i have to wipe the water from inside the car to drive home from work, thanks a ton.

You need to check all you door and hatch seals and also check you drain tubes in the trunk to see if they are leaking.

If all fails use the hose on your car and leave it on the sides roof etc and see where it is leaking from.

I know you live out west and cars don't rust as bad out there but check your floorboards. I had a car once that had rusty floorboards and they would cause that.

Check the sunroof drains, the hatch weatherstripping, the seal around the rear windshield wiper, the seal around the radio antenna and the vent port in the right-rear corner. Check the spare tire well for a lake.

The roof has four drains, one to each wheelwell. Use stiff weed whacker line to clean them out, from the top.

Thats a very good idea! I'm going to clean mine out after work, when I bought my car they were all stopped up with glass chunks. I got it out the best I could, but this should really get it all out!

Does it only happen in harder rain not light rain? I'll bet it's your windshield trim. It happened to me. This is on my 1G, not sure about a 2G.

Crud builds up under the trim so the water can't flow down and out. It backs up all the way to the roof seam and leaks inside.

Remove the trim and clean out the debris so the water can flow all the way through. I even had to use a razor and trim away some blobs of sealant but I don't have water leaking in anymore.

To the original poster - please stop calitalizing the first letter of every single word. It's annoying.

Now onto a very cheap solution. Find out where exactly the water is coming through (if you need to use a garden hose, then do that). You can then use some Permatex Ultra Black RTV silicone where the leak is (all along the seam where the glass meets the weather stripping). Leave your window down for several hours to let it dry. (I would give it at least 10 hours to dry.)

I did this when I was getting too much water inside the cabin (and was too lazy to go down to the parts store and pick up some weather stripping). I had to wait for one of my days off from doing stuff, apply the RTV in the morning, and left the car door open (and battery disconnected) until later that evening. Worked like a charm. ;)

Check the dates. The original post is almost 2 years old. Post #4 even mentions that he's bringing this back from the dead. Take a little more time and read it all next time.
