1G Hatch leaking when opened?

I had a ton of water leaking into my trunk a while back, and figured out it was leaking in through my spoiler. I removed it and ended up removing the rear wiper and antenna too. The leaking stopped and I like the cleaner look. It started leaking again though recently, so I'll be checking the things you guys mentioned here.

Mine was leaking through the wiper seal.

When I removed the plastic cover the wiper motor was all rusty. I took out the whole mechanism and installed a spare vw underbody rubber grommet that I had laying around. It was a perfect fit and now no leaks!

I am doing sound deadening now. Pulled the lower hatch open and about 3" of standing water. So i start looking. Everything looks fine. Come to find out the passenger side drain was kinked and more than likely the windshield filler tube was all gunked up. The fill tube can definitely cause this. Just thought id let anyone know who searches this too.

The leak is at the base of the rear glass. Put some clear silicone along the bottom of the glass. This will fix it. Have had to do this to 3 different DSM's, worked every time.

Yup for 1G's this is almost always the solution. I've see this happen countless amouts of times. I did mine and just put it right on the outside. Best way just tape off the area and put a line of the silicone and run it in with you finger. Peal off the tap and Bam! No More Leaky!

Ok guys im a new here and to 2g dsms!
Just bought this 96 eclipse gs (850$)
And just found a bunch of problems! Ill start with this issue
Since we r talking about water in the hAtch area!
Rained the other day and went to open the hatch and found water
Just sitting in the channels where the hatch seals!!
Found two spots where i thought the water drained but couldnt
Get the water out here?? So ? Is where do i make sure to clean to let water out??

Drifterz73,

The drain holes/lines are directly aft of the hatch lift strut mounts on the car (about midway up the channel). I double checked on both a 2ga and 2gb they look like little indentations with a hole in the center.

Good luck

I just re-read your post and realized that you had found them. I usually run something like a metal hanger through and then some compressed air.

Glad I stumbled upon this thread.Drifterz73, where the water looks like it is suppose to drain is where the drain tubes are. If you look under the car at the rear corners, you can see them. I used a coat hanger to clean them out. After all the gunk was out, I poured the hottest tap water I could find down into the tubes to get anything that I may have missed.

you beat me to it LOL. Dang late phone posting.

yeah thanx guys... had to take rear panels off to get to the hoses.
completely backed up... cleaned out and no more water...LOL
i will post more issues about car in the respective places...glad i joined..

Had this problem, I would open my hatch and water would flood out from the plastic inside into my back seats. So first I used silicone on my high rise wing,Still would leak. Next I replaced the seal on the window and still would leak. Then I put silicone around the whole window and it would still leak!!! Then one day I realized my gst has a rear wiper and the motor looked rusted and seized(it doesn't work) so I put silicone around the black rubber part on the outside and wouldn't you know it that thats where te water was leaking in from. Try that because I
Haven't had a drop of water since.
That’s where I think my problem is. Did you pop up off the metal surrounding the rubber parts to get to them or could you just squeeze in the silicone while leaving the surrounding cap alone?

The base of the wiper arm is actually a cap you can lift up to reveal a nut. Remove that nut, and remove the wiper. From there the little trim piece surrounding it should just pop off. If it doesn't just remove the whole spoiler.

From there you can RTV it and seal it properly. I would bet you're also leaking from one or both of the spoiler bolts that go from inside the hatch to the spoiler itself. Before you take the spoiler off head over to dsm3dcreations website and order all new 1GA spoiler mounting hardware and clips. You will need them. Mine was leaking like crazy, and I'm glad I took the spoiler entirely off. After I did, I found a giant rust hole, and a few other holes that were for stock bolts that were just open to air.

Thanks a ton. I will give this a try. I’ve never really been mechanically inclined, but getting this car seems to mean I have found a bit of a new hobby.

So my hatch was leaking and after reading posts I figured I might be in for a multi-staged process finding the leak(s) and fixing it. I started with the easiest thing, sealing around the rear wiper base with RTV silicone. Two car washes and two rainstorms later, it hasn’t leaked yet.
