Interior Water Leaks threads [Merged 1-7] leak leaking hatch sunroof drain drains

Ok ok, I know what your thinking, this is dumb...right??

I have a bad water leak in my left rear hatch area. I think around the wheel well. I have sealed ALL of the rubber plugs in the rear with silicon. Removed the tail lights and sealed them with "Dum Dum" its a tar-like strip caulk. I have triple checked and sealed with silicon the tubes coming from the sun-roof. I have sat in the trunk while my friend drives to try and find the leak.

I work at a car dealership and we have a guy that comes once a week and he specializes in water leaks. His "fix" was to flood the area between the wheel well and the quarter panel with silicon.

Not only do i not like this idea because of the massive amounts of silicon he wants to use but I'm afraid that if we don't get the leak and it is coming from that area we will never fix it.

I'm curious if anyone else has had this problem??? this is seriously the one problem that has left me puzzled after owning this car for over five years. Thanks for your patients fellas.

I have a bad leak in my rear after taco night. LOL Really though have you tried the incense test? Start your car, have the windows up, turn the A/C or fan on high to pressurize the inside of your car and go along all the seams and anywere you think a leak may come from with a burning incese stick. The smoke will tell all my friend.

^^Good idea, I've never thought about that.

When my trunk was leaking, my little drain holes were clogged. The holes on the right and left side of the hatch. one is kind of near the antenna and the other one is on the same place on the other side. Where that hole is there is a tube that goes down behind the rear wheels, if its clogged the water will over flow and go into the trunk. Try checking those holes. There is also a big rubber plug in the floor of the trunk you can drain the water with.

Took my car through the car wash the other day, after it was done I got just as clean as my car. Both driver and passenger side door windows and side mirrors had water gushing inside my car. Do I need to replace the whole weather stripping on both doors? I just don't want to spend a butt load of money.

Our frameless windows do not exactly like high pressure water to begin with, but yeah . . . you're more than likely going to need new weather stripping soon.

I have a similar problem with water leaking in my truck.
This thread is so long and goes back and forth between sunroof and hatch, however my issue is hatch an quarter glass related. I have a 97 gst that leaks water on the pass side rear. I notice water in the rear carpet and found that is was accumulating water in the spare tire that acted like a cascading waterfall upon breaking, thus wetting the rear carpet..I saw the water marks. I pulled the trunk plug to keep it dry and removed all the trunk trim. I found 3 leaks, 1 at the body seam an the pass rear body seam near the weatherstrip and the tailight, the other on the hatch itself and a 3rd below the pass rear window. I beleive the hatch leak is from the wiper grommet. I will likely remove the grommet and use blacr rtv and resintall or replace the seal. Any thought either way? On the other leak, I took a hose and ran it on the car, found that the pass rear drain was clogged, becasue it was kinked. Took it off, cleared it, and turned it around and installed it backwards to remove the kink. It reduce the leak but the leak persisted. I placed water at the gap between the pass rear window and the sheet metal and found thru channelling it leaks a lot back near the body seam and under the window on the pass side. I tried that on the drivers side and it didnt leak, so There is some issue with pass side rear window sealing. I placed black silicone at that gap, neatly so it looks stock and ran the hose again and it minimzed the leak, and stopped the leak below the window but i still have water leaking in the body seam, just much less. Now, however water build=t up a little in the valley by the tailight and then runs against the hatch seal and leaks under the hatch seal. I siliconed the hatch seal and non I'n down to a tricke @ the body seam, but I still can't see how it gets to the body seam. Any suggestions? I will include pics soon. I want to get the trim panels back on as they have been out of the car for abotu 3 years now, casue I didn't want mildew damage. Additionally, My pwr antenna broke and I have replaced the cable so I would like to get all the trim back in @ one time. Any suggestions?

so when got into the car today there was a exhesive amount of condensation. like big drops and i think it is what is frying my ecu's cause i have gone threw two. when i run my hand accross the ecu case it is damp  so when i open my hatch water pours out the end. like after a hard rain. i tried looking at the seals but they all seem in good shape. i pulled the inside panel at the end of the trunk and it is swimming. anybody had this problem?

Get some baby powder and lightly coat the seal's, close your trunk and look at the powder, if powder is removed from the seal it's good, if powder is still present in a few places try to stiffen up the seal by placing small strips of weather strip or rubber behind the seal to make it tighter in that area :thumb:

You have easy enough access to your ECU that you can just wipe off the casing at will? Perhaps putting your console back together would alleviate some of the moisture getting to the ECU?

Also, if moisture was the cause of the ECU's failing there would most likely be visible damage from a short. I used to work at an electronics factory and you can pretty much throw any electronic device in the lake and so long as you dry it out back to the way it was before (easier said than done in some instances) it should operate just how it used to.

yea i have the same issue. water pours out of the trim on the hatch right? luckly im in florida and it dries it right out. i have come to the conclusion that its leaks out one of 3 holes on my car, washer fluid nosel, window seal (unlikely but could happen), or the wiper arm. i would get some window aheasive/sealant and take all the trim off and look where the water is comming from and seal up those leaks with the sealant from the inside. plus it wouldnt hurt to seal it anyways if it looks like its not leaking.

so just kinda building up the area under/behind the seal?

what about cleaning out the rain gutters in the hatch ( if there are any). i recalled some other people from different boards having similar issues with water in the hatch and majority of them had clogged gutters ( full of leaves and what not ). might want to give that a shot.

Thanks again.

i have the pass side leak @ the pass front mirror, I belive this happened when I changed the black above the window trim that was peeling as the new ones didn't fit as well as the old ones. should i replace the door seal? who has the cheapest seal? whats the price range?I also have a leak on the pass side where the body and bumper bolt together. i have a leak coming from the rront bottoe and rear bottom fastner insert that holds the cabin vent to the car under the bumper under the fuel door on the pass side trunk. theres also a leak on the front side of the vent itself where the vent and car meet. Can this be fixed w/o removing the bumper?

:thumb: That's all there is to it. Your local parts house sells universal weather strip with an adhesive backing, that work's the best, just cut into small strips and place behind the old seal

Ok today i decided to mess with the dsm, im taking the aftermarket alarm out, and im tracing all the wires to where they go. Well i guess on the pass side theres a doorlock computer which the alarm is tapped into. So anyway i noticed that the floor is wet, keep in mind i havent driven this car in about two months or so. So its not anything mechanical. I was wondering how would water get in there. Snow finally melted off of it. I was thinking if the door seals are bad and allowing water to hit the floor and soak the front carpet and floor board.

They do look a lil torn and i noticed when i drove it in the rain it would leak at the top, but just checking if this is normal for a 1g dsm. Also where can i get those seals, they prob dont make them anymore for our cars should i just take it off and bring it to the autoparts store so they could match something up for me.

Are you sure its just water, and not coolant ?(possible bad heater core)

from experience of owning 1g's Ive noticed that when it rains sometimes the A pillar will leak and water will drip down the cover and then to the floor, or if you have a sunroof maybe a leaking drain hose

im pretty sure its just leaking from the door seals, i havent driven it in awhile, it doesnt smell sweet or anything. What should i do ilco187, like i said in my post, like when it was raining i would noticed it leak from there. Im just trying to get some ideas before i replace it. I wouldnt think they wouldnt go bad. I never owned car that it did. But i own a dsm so who knows.

it could be the inner door seal leaking-on the body at the top

I still can't figure out where mine comes from in the trunk on the passenger side. Its like in the back corner. I was back there as I went through a car wash and it like poured in. i have no ####ing clue, trunks rusted LOL

I was driving my 92 gsx today in the rain when i noticed a puddle of water in my passenger side floor board. Has anyone else had this problem i cheaked all the drain plugs under the car and there fine. I also had to bypass the hoses going to the heater core because my heater core when out.

Door seals are shot. Need new, or find a DSM out in a yard with good door seals you can take off.

Water, being kicking up by the front tires along the botton of the door, is getting past the two door seals.

The door seal iself, which goes completely around the outside of the door frame and the lower part of this seal loves to tear away from the lower section of the door frame.
