Interior Water Leaks threads [Merged 1-7] leak leaking hatch sunroof drain drains

I've been looking for this leak for a long time and I cannot seem to find it. I get a little bit of water, just enough that it's wet all across the back, but with no real depth. After using silicone to seal every possible hole in the back hatch where the spoiler attaches and many attempts at finding the leak with a hose on the oustide while I was inside with a flashlight, I found that it only gets wet when I drive. It stays completely dry when the car is sitting still. I still can't find where it's coming in though, even when I spray all over the underside and the wheelwells I can't make the water come in when I'm sitting still. This leak is elusive, does anyone have any ideas on how to find it? It's only in the rear hatch area. I'm suspecting the strut towers, I'll have to keep testing I guess.

Maybe the next time it rains I'll make my brother lay in the back with a flashlight while I drive.

I went to home depot and picked up a roll of adhesive weatherstripping- the thickest I could find. Now it's sealed tight.

Oh yeah, both of my drain tubes are clear. I think I will get it nice and dry, clean up the surface, and rhino liner that biotch. I have everything behind the front seats out of the car to help me find where it's leaking. It's sort of growing on me, I may keep it this way. A little loud, but I did notice the increase in acceleration.

hey everyone,
I have a problem. My car is leaking water. The other day, after it rained all night, the rear drivers side floor mat was soaked in water. The carpet was also completely soaked. (Behind the Driver's Seat). Upon further inspection, I noticed that the headliner, sunroof, and the weatherstripping were all completely dry. Nothing at all was wet except for the carpet behind the driver's seat. Is it possible for the water to be coming from underneath? That doesn't make much sense. I have noticed that underneath my spare tire, there has been water accumulated there before. Maybe this is so bad that it has leaked to the carpet?
Please help me figure this problem out. Everytime I thoroughly dry the area, the next time it rains it happens again and my car is beginning to smell like cheese!

theres a small plug under your spare tire you can remove to keep water from accumulating there. as far as the wet area behind your seat , i would suggest taking your back seat out as well as the driver side panel where your rear speaker resides, and have a look see around there

I have been trying to fix a leak in my hatch for a few weeks now. I bought the car (92 tsi awd) a few months ago and noticed had a leak in the hatch/trunk. I gutted the trunk and the leak is on both sided coming from somewhere in the upper corners of the trunk. What I have done so far:

-Replaced hatch weather stripping with new one from Mistu
-Replaced seals on the brake light units (no water is coming from them now)
-Sealed the holes that hold the spoiler on

Now when we get a good rain there is almost a 1/2 cup of water sitting back there. The leak is obviously coming from somewhere else. Anyone had a similar problem and fixed it??

Did you clean out the drain holes? In my car the drain holes were clogged with dirt, so my mechanic used his air gun to blow out all the crap in there. Now they drain good. If you open the hatch, the holes are on both sides down where there body flattens out more in the channels. If they are clogged water will pool and spill into the trunk. I had a small puddle in the back of my car because of it.

I've had this problem before with my 87 charger hatchback. I fixed it by first making sure it was completely dry, then I took out a hose and sprayed the hell out of it from every angle. Then I popped open the hatchback and looked for any spots that were wet. I then put some of that foam insulation for doors around the actual hatch to seal the parts that weren't meeting snuggly to the rubber.

I have had a few different cars in my time and all three cars have had a trunk leak at one time or another. All mine were caused by a leaky weaterstrip seal. If I were you I would call some local shops and see if any of them have a smoke machine. They are usually used for EVAP emmisions testing but you can fill the vehicle with smoke and test for wind/air/water leaks from the body or glass. Hope that helps

I Need Some Help. On My Driver Side Window Water Is Getting Into The Car. I Think The Water Is Getting In Around The Top Of The Side View Mirror Is. It's Not A Lot Of Water But Enough To Make A Little Puddle On My Door Sill. But When I Close The Door, It Seems To Make A Tight Seal. But I Guess Not. What Can I Do??

I would just go ahead and replace the weather stripping. You could just find the leak and fix that but its going to happen more and more. In the end I would just change up the weather stripping and save myself more time and annoyance later :thumb: .

Check to make sure the weatherstripping is on the doorjam correctly, sometimes the fastners seem to fall out. Mine has good weatherstripping but a bad fastner.

I am having the same problem with my car it has been a steady downpour for 2 days and my carpet is soaked.

I wanted to know if you ever figured out what it was that caused it

Thanks for the help. Its not the drain tubes, those are cleaned. I might have to try that smoke thing but I don't want to smell up the interior.

Okay I have figured mine out. It is the antenna housing. I took a house and had the water run over the antenna base. I removed the square peice of plastic that will give you access to the antenna lines. Thats where I seen the water comming at a good pace.

Now the only thing is I need to find a sealant that I can put under that base so the water wont come in anymore.

My 90 leaked in the antenna housing as well due to the fact that the antenna was ripped out. Also you might want to check the latch to make sure the hatch is held down tight when its closed.

Everytime we get a big rain the floorboard behind the passenger seat is getting wet. But I can't figure out where its coming from. If it was coming through the window it would seem that the inside of the window or door would be wet or damp, but its perfectly dry. And looking at the seam for the backlid opening if it was leaking through there the backseat would be wet for sure, but the backseat is bone dry. I don't have a sunroof so its not leaking from that ....any other ideas?

One possibility that I've run into is the vent tube for the A/C condensor becomes plugged with debris and then water cannot escape. This was on another make of vehicle but your car should have some sort of drain for the condensor case. Look for it in the engine compartment where the A/C condensor is located. It should be low on the case. If it's a rubber elbow try squeezing it or removing it to inspect for debris. Let me know what you find.

check the hatch drain holes. The water should exit in front of the back wheel (right behind the passenger door). The drain could be clogged and the water is overflowing and seeping behind the drain.
Good luck dude.

Alright, so everytime is rains my rear passenger floor becomes soaked. I have always had a weird smell when it rains, so i just now i know what it is. What could be the problem.

I would look at the seals around the back small side glass (whichever side it's leaking on), the door seal (especially toward the rear), or the hatch glass (although I doubt it's this) for leakage.

Of course you already know that the weird smell is the carpet and/or the "juke" padding underneath, it will mold up if not aired out properly and smell like an old car from the junk yard.

yeah ofcourse a leak, can it be the drain from the sunroof being blocked? I dont think my door seals are leaking.

I've had the same problem for at least a few years now.

Check your rubber door liners (aka the black weather stripping). Mine leaks at the liner right at the drivers-side rear-view mirror, and along the liner near the upper seatbelt harness (again, on the drivers-side).

During the winter (with all the slush and snow) and when it rains my rear floor gets soaked.

You should see how much fun it is for me to go through the car wash. :coy:

If the leak was coming through your sunroof, you should be able to see the moisture. If not, put your hand up there and feel around the entire head-liner of the car.
