Interior Water Leaks threads [Merged 1-7] leak leaking hatch sunroof drain drains

Have you drilled any holes anywhere for wiring up neons or stereos? I had this problem with a different car and it turned out to be a hole I drilled through the firewall near the front fender. the pressure was so high under that wheel that it just sucked water right in. If youve done any drilling check those first.

Mine does!

I just peeled up my back seats and they are all nast and frozen/wet and black and crappy. :barf:

This is due to my trunk leaking all the time when it rains. When the trunk is totally shut, and hasnt been opened at all that day, and then I start moving, I get a nice dual waterfall effect into the trunk and the back seats. WTF?

New sealing?

Thanks for the link, I am aware of those drainage tracks and mine seem to flow water ok...

Bad design in general? Do some people not have the problem?

Mine doesn't leak. Could be the seal? Wash your car and have someone in the trunk see if they see any water coming in.

I have the same problem, as i looked when i opened the hatch, it seems to be coming from in between the trim, So i'm thinking it has to be a seal issue with me.

i have the same exact problem and when i saw the title i was :) but then when i read that its the sunroof i was  becasue i dont have a sunroof, someone have any other reasons

1. has the car been in an accident?

I will bet that it has.
Alot of repair shops over look body drains. In the accident they get bent closed.
You said the water is in the front drivers compartment correct?
When it happen is the car parked at any angles? If so look at the corresponding body drain.
IE, parked flat surface, but drivers side is lower then passanger side. Then that would be the drivers front body drain that is under the wiper grills.

I would pull both grills and look.
The windshield leak is unlikely.
The rear hatch is even more unlikely for several reasons... 1. The hatch has no openings to the interior other then a 1/2" ridge that has weather stripping. It holds the water in to drain out of the bottom of the channels. 2. The water would have to fill the rear cargo compartment, fill the rear seat buckets, fill the bucket behind the front seats, ect ect you get the point. That's a shit load of water...

So I say it is the front drivers air duct drain. It is coming in there, on the drivers side unibody panel beside the door hinges behind the kick panels.

Only the third post mentioned a sunroof and only once as a POSSIBLE source of the leak. No one else was talking about a sunroof.

A sunroof leak would soak the headliner and be obvious. (at least with the sunroof leaks I have seen)
Also to be bad enough to be filling a foot area, it would have to be noisey while driving. And the water would follow the path of least resistance, that would be the rear side panels and fill both foot rest areas behind the front seats.
Thast is unless the car is parked with its nose lower then the rear.

Does anyone have more information on trunk hatch leaks?

I've been having the same problem (this seems very common judging by this thread -- design flaws, anyone??!) -- after a couple days of rain I was horrified to find 4 inches of water in my spare tire compartment and all the rugs were soaked.

I think it is probably the hatch drains. Are these the two round holes in the sink around the trunk? They seem totally clogged with grime. How can I unplug them?

Someone mentioned that the water is supposed to run out the back of the sinks, but mine (95 eclipse) have ridges on the back too, so the only way for water to esscape seems to be these small holes, one on either side.

thanks!

air compressor with blower attachment would do wonders... insert one end and squeeze... then run some water then blow again, go in that cycle for a few rounds and should be good to go.

also might suggest drilling a hole, paint the edges. Get a grommet to cover the edges, but leave a small portion of the hole open. So then the water could only get 1/8" deep at the most.

Also when my camaro would leak in the hatch, I pulled the body plug in the center well. Left the carpet covering it, so that killed any road or exhaust noise, but allowed any water that leaked in, a 2 1/2" X 5" hole to drain out of.

my car had exactly the same problem. it turns out that one of the rear drains was cloged, then the water would go down by the tailight and into the car again by the ventilation gill.
i opened the hose that drains the water and put some silicone on the bentilation and that did the trick

Good stuff, I had a problem with the windshield most recently. It appears there was not a good seal between the body and the windshield and water was draining down the pillar. I would be driving down the road and water would just drip right from where the automatic seatbelt ended.

I fixed that leak and come out this morning and find water again sitting in the drivers foot well. Car sits at an incline nose down. The car has been in a minor accident so it looks like the folks here are recommending a drain right below the windshield wiper?? If this is the case are you guys saying the water is leaking from behind the kick panel that adjoins the fuse box?

This is what my problem was....my passenger window track was messed up..(went too high) and that window always leaked. I let the car set up for about a month and it raind like 2 times but when it came time to put the motor in i had a pond about 4'' deep. If you are standing outside the car it leaked on the passenger top left corner of the window..from there it would leak down and drip right infront of the rear seat into the floor board. If this is goin on just check when its raining and you will see some condensation on that window.

To fix that i replaced the rubber seal arouund the entire window and adjusted the window track and i sucked the heck out of that carpet..but make sure that you check all your drains first, (windshield, sunroof, back hatch, and your lower bodyplugs). OMG

So has anyone posting this thread experienced a leak through the port right by the driver side side windshield wiper. I put the water hose through there and the driver side footwell immediately becomes wet.

I sealed this off, problem goes away, but I loose fresh air and the ability to adjust the temperature of the heat. Any Idea of the easiest way to get to the leak problem, looks like the dash has to come out?

My 1G hatch has a leak! I opened the back (after newly installing hatch struts, BTW) after driving for about 20 min in the rain, and the trim panel attached to the hatch was full of water! I can't figure it out- there doesn't seem to be any leak from the wiper grommet or any of the (visible) spoiler screws- any ideas?

Do you find that you are getting water into your 1G trunk after it rains? Have you already changed the weather stripping in the back? Do you lift up the hatch and water starts to drip out of the plastic tray at the bottom of the hatch? If these things are happening the likely culprit is the grommet that is designed to keep water from getting around the rear wiper arm where it goes through the hatch. Replacing the grommet requires removing the platic cover under the hatch and the rear wiper arm. 10 minute job can save you the hassle of a wet trunk!

my spoiler was kind of warped up, and water would get between the spoiler and the weather stripping, a little silicon fixed it right up. check that

I have a gap in my weatherstripping that is allowing water to get in but I should have that fixed temporarily until I can get a new one. I'm going to have to check on the wiper arm grommet though.

you sound like a salesman :thumb:

on my 1.8, that peice of plastic is always filled with water. i never open my hatch though so it just sits in there. eventually i will fix the spots around where the spoiler mounts (thats where its leaking) by removing the spoiler and putting silicone sealer all over the place. ROFL

I had a friend pour water on the trunk while I looked at the underside with a flashlight: turns out the problem was that since I replaced the hatch struts, the hatch sits about an inch off the weather stripping! The wiper grommet seems fine, even though the plastic panel was full of water- I think it's because it dripped down the inside following the contour of the metal.

Anybody know if you can adjust the latch so that it closes tighter?

Is there supposed to be weather stripping on the spoiler? Mine doesn't have any! OMG It's also lifted about a 1/2 inch off the hatch surface, I'm planning to install some cheap foam weather stripping to make it stop rattling.

check the drainage tubes on either side of the hatch, they can get clogged and overflow or split after time.
