If anyone out there has tried this; How hard is it to fit an EVO V Intercoler, and how much of a difference did it make?

The only thing about people sayign the evo intercooler sucks is that how do you know ebay intercooles are better? I havent seen any ebay intercoolers truly tested.:D

I don't know about you, but I prefer first-hand experience. There are probably 150 people running the SS autochrome fmic who have testified to their experience in that 50+ page thread and everywhere else in the forums. Not a single person has had a bad experience and only glowing reviews. To me, that tells me all I need to know. Not to mention MY personal experience with it.

I thought I want to share some custom pictures with you guys. I just installed a used Evo 8 IC into my 2G DSM. It took me about a couple of hours, the only real problem I encountered was the hard power steering lines that run in front of the radiator, they were in the way they ran about one inche in front of one of the intercooler outlets.

I also trimmed the front bumper with a dremmel tool. I just used a rotary disc of about 1.5" in diameter. Overall was really easy. I only paid $150 for the intercooler and someone is building me the IC pipes for about $200.

Here is the link for the pics:

Thanks for reading!

That thing looks crazy big on your final picture (in a good way). I would have recommended putting it on upside down (if it would have worked). I think it would look good with the similar shape of the front opening.

Good observation but let me explain why I did not flipped the intercooler upside down:

1) By placing the Intercooler upside down the outlet would be facing up right in the middle of nowhere, I would have to cut the chasi in order to fit the tubing.
2) The mounting wholes of the intercooler perfectly line up with the main rectagular front end frame making it very easy to tap a couple of screws(self taping)

As far is the looks, that is not the finished product. I am placing a black painted mesh that will cover the entire front bumper mouth.

Having the intercooler with the outlets facing down(the way is mounted on the Evos) is makes it so much easier to route the piping underneath.

I will be posting the final pictures of the intercooler very soon, the next pictures will include the custom piping as well.

Hahaha, this post is funny because my buddy has been trying to sell me his evo intercooler of his car. Now I know that it will work, swaaeeeet!

I honestly think the Evo 8 intercooler is perhaps the best option out there for used ICs. People are selling their Evo 8 IC on evolutionm very cheap ($150-200). You can have someone making the piping for you for about $200.

As far is the performance, well I use to have a Nisei engeneering IC on my Evo MR and it did not improve my performance at all, the core was a 25"X13"X3.5". I ended puting back the stocker IC and now I am very happy with it.

Definately I would recommend to anyone specially if you have a limited budget.

Can your DSM keep up with your EVO?
Install looks sweet. I love it when there is a stack of things to install on the car. Its like Christmas!

^^^^ No, it would take more work to get close to the performance of the Evo. The Evo runs [email protected] on stock turbo, stock intercooler, stock ECU and stock injectors.

Here is a link of evolutionm. Someone is selling their 2006 Evo 9 intercooler for only $125.

That is what I was talking about guys, the Evo 8-9 IC is a great option for those of you that have the initiave and talent. Yo8u can fully custom built a Evo 8 intercooler for about $350

Friend with an 04 evo8 just dropped an AMS T35 upgrade kit for his evo, new core and everything, offering to practically give his stock evo8 intercooler to me. Anyone know anyone who may have already attempted this, knows whether or not theres a lot of frabrication on mounting it... piping etc?

But furthur more... anyone know if this kind of swap would cost me boost pressure? or would it actually be worth it as long as its done correctly... im sure it wouldnt be large gains in power, but it would be large gains in appearance also haha :sneaky:

I don't no how much fabbing it takes but I know you need custom piping for it since the turbo is on the other side in the evo. So the piping needs to go a longer distance but Ive seen it done on many dsms.

Just aproach it as you would if you got an ebay intercooler with no piping. Figure out the mounting of the intercooler of itself first then start running you intercooler piping.

Agreed, even with the custom fab work you will end up with a good FMIC at a great price.

The fab part is easy...If you know someone who can weld it would help a lot.

I just put my evo intercooler on yesterday.
Gotta run the pipes still.

I cant weld aluminum, so I have to settle with the endcaps facing retarded directions, but Im just buying SS tubing online, then welding it all together myself.

I say if you can get a good deal on it, do it.

--yea, nothing special, but it works till I can do something better...

Oh yea, camera phone pics, so they aint the best quality.

dam, old post

I finally got around to installing my evo 8 front mount this weekend. I searched all over the internet looking for piping ideas, but didn't come up with much for a first gen, so I was on my own. It took my friend and I about 10 hours from start to finish to complete, with a few beer breaks in between:D . I have some pictures that I will try to post up here when I am home from work and get some free time. So far, I am very impressed with the improvement over the stock sidemount. I was runnin 20 psi dropping to 18 with the sidemount, and the car just felt weak up top. Now at the same boost levels, the car screams up top. It feels like a totally different car. I have a small boost leak I need to fix when my other couplers come in later this week. I had to ghetto rig a 2.5"-2" reducer for the j-pipe, but it still doesnt like to hold after a couple hard pulls. When I get everything straightened out, it's time to hit the dyno. My best before the fmic was 251 whp and 271 wtq at 17 lbs on the 14b. With this front mount and some tuning, I am positive the car will see at least 275 whp on the lil 'ol 14b. I will try and keep everyone updated, as I am sure there are others out there wondering about putting an evo 8 intercooler on their first gens.

Yea, def. post some pictures and even an install guide for us. Any welding or grinding, tight fit or anything like that that came up? I hope you hit you goals when you dyno, and get a new turbo on her shortly.

Sounds good so far.

I just had to cut away some of the crash beam, and trim a little around the hole where the uicp used to meet the smic. I even got to keep the fog lights =). No welding, just took the pipes I had trimmed to get the ends re-beaded at my buddy's shop. I just used a 2.5" universal piping kit from ebay, worked out really well.

So, what did you do, just open up the uicp hole, went to the front of the car with 2.5 tube, where did the piping go after the j pipe, how did you route that? Got any pics to show. Im interested in a front mount for my car.

Thanks

James

I'm working on getting some pics. All the pics I took during the install are on my girlfriend's camera, and I just got back in town from vacation, and I'm starting a new job Monday, so I've been real busy lately, sorry guys.

I just wanted to bump this thread up..see if there is any new news on this. I'm contemplating buying an evo 8 front mount off a guy for 150 bucks just wanted to see if its worth it
