Hey guys I'm about to install my walbro 450, and I don't want to use the stock wiring since I put together my own rewire kit.

I had a 255 in there when I bought the car and I never even drove it before I realized I wanted more. I took it apart today and saw all they did was basically use everything stock they could, just adding the minimal. No biggie. But I would rather upgrade as much of the wiring as I could. I see some people saying they're going to remove the stock wiring and run their own through a gromet in the hanger? Is this safe? Doesn't a gromet leave an opening and aren't these hangers supposed to be sealed on the tank?

Or does everyone use the stock wiring that goes through the hanger, like in the pic is my 255 with the negative going to a nut (ground) on the hanger, and the positive soldered to the stock positive wire. Should I just replicate this with the red and black wire on the male connector in the 450 install kit I got? See pic 3.. Obviously removing the 255 connector first..

Could anyone that has any info give me a clue? Thanks guys

You could either run a bulkhead ( designed for electrical) or run a larger gauge wire to the ground stud from both the pump to the sending unit and sending unit to body ground(i use strut bolts). For power wire i opened up the oem power wire crimp and added in a larger gauge wire. Just be careful opening it that you dont break it.

Check my build thread.. Pte6165, fic2150s, built head plus port n polish, hks 272s with unorthodox gears, gates blue belt gates tentioner, built 2.0 block Manley +.040 pistons manley rods, eagle 4340 crank, kiggly girdle, I'm figuring what kind of HG to get now too.. Was gonna get a BC but then I read they just source from cometic and throw their name on it. I'm buyin a new built trans 0mi built by dogbox racing.. Jmf drag manifold, q45 tb, 3" uicp, 2.5 licp (both short route) much more I can't remember all right now

I'm going for 600+ on my first tune, but setting the rest up for higher so when i upgrade my turbo again i won't have to do a million other things..

I doubt there will be any voltage drop if you cut/solder with the existing power wire. Just be sure to use 10awg or even 8awg with the rewire. Unless u want to spend more money and time customizing it, a simple rewire will meet your goals.

Does this help in the operation of the pump? Or would the pump react the same if I just rewired my 8awg wire on the top side of the hanger to the battery with my 40a relay and 30a circuit breaker n stuff..

Or is it better to run larger wire all the way through?

And what did you do with the standard female connector that wires off the pump, cut it off? And wire all your own?

Any pics or anything?

Thanks boosted I'm using 8awg cause I already had it, and just bought a 40a relay(same 1 that comes in the stm kit) and a 30a circuit breaker to work with the 8awg, and some ring terminals that take 8awg (they were pretty expensive like almost 2$each for ring terminals LOL but selection was low for 8awg)...

I just look at the stock wiring and it looks all crudded up and stuff like any 27 year old car would have.. And would like to redo it, but as long as it's safe not to, and don't have to... I'll just stick with a basic rewire..

Yeah I just kept the ground wire stock and upgraded the power to 10 or 8 gauge, I think. I'm certainly not pretending that my way is the best way or even appropriate but I heard of a few people really maxing out their stock wiring on the 450. The big power wire goes to the relay I put in for the rewire. Stock wiring is largely still there. I really just replaced that one power wire, and it wasn't anything more than the usual rewire. Thanks for looking at the build there is a big update coming soon. Get your popcorn ready ! :)

From what I have gathered on the 400, and especially the 450, is that you will want your entire feed and return line upgraded to a minimum of -8AN and -6AN respectively prior otherwise you will likely run into fuel control issues. I see the sending unit was still stock lines from page 2 of your build. Bigger lines is in your wish list, but that pump flows a lot more than thr stock lines can handle consistently... unless you are doing that before firing up still, then disregard this :)
