Trying to install my Walbro 450 and it is hitting the bottom of the tank barely. I am totally loss because I cut the top of the pump and installed a bulkhead fitting. Judging other install pictures my pump lines up in the same area with the bottom of the hanger. Is it suppose to hit the bottom? Very close clearance? Or do I need to take out the piece in the actual fuel tank? I attached pictures and need some guidance. Also happy New Years.

That’s a sweet setup buddy…..I don’t know if I can swing that right now……..hopefully there is a fix and then later I can go that route

I installed mine just like stock. I had to cut quite a bit of the long nipple that’s on top of the fuel pump off and the rubber piece under the pump was cut in half. I used the Toyota fuel pump seal which is a better design. (The seal doesn’t apply to your setup since you went AN bulkhead.) I also used my Walbro 255 fuel sock since it was smaller then the huge 450 sock. No modifications to the inside of the tank and I wouldn’t recommend messing with anything in the tank anyway. Can you cut the fuel pump feed nipple down any more?

Sorry I don’t have a picture of the other side unfortunately.

EDIT: Did you do the fuel syphon mod? If not you definitely need to with this pump :)

I did do the syphon mod. Comparing your pic with mine it looks like the bottom of the hanger as at the same location of the pump as mine. I did end up using the 255 sock. It just seems like the sock is sitting right at the bottom of the tank. Hopefully that make sense.

You need to cut off a small section of the barbed fitting on the pump then it will fit.
This is exactly what I did with my 450 install and worked just fine. There is a tech article on here somewhere about it too. Also, I highly recommend you stick a vacuum pump or wet/dry vac in that tank while its open and get all those particles and stuff I see down in there before closing it back up!

I did cut off the double barb on the pump and still seems like it is hitting the bottom but just barely

Take a magnet while your at it and clean all of that rust out of there! that pump wont be delivering the maximum fuel with a clogged up strainer.

That’s my next step after I fix the pump issue……going to try to get back at it tomorrow and see what I can come up with

Maybe it's the bulkhead you used, I cut off one barb and it fit perfectly.

When I installed my 535 pump (physically the same size as the 450) I cut two barbs off the pump itself and had to grind my bulk fitting barb by a millimeter or two to fit and clear from bottoming out.

Pictures of the bulk head without pump
Ok. A little update. I did cut some of the barb off of the bulk head fitting already and the top picture is the picture with both the double barb on the pump cut and the barb on the bulk head cut. It seems to fit now but the filter on the pump still lays on the bottom of the tank……Should I just roll with that? Is it supposed to be that close? Thanks for all the responses. It does help a lot with problem solving.

Sitting on bottom is fine. When I cut the barbs I lost fuel pressure. Maybe from it leaking in the tank? IDK. Said screw it and went Fullblown Motorsport and have been happy ever since.

You should be fine. As long as you have Atleast one barb on the pump itself to bite into the hose you’ll be fine.

You could try it and log fuel pressure if you’re currently not and see if it laying on the bottom of the tank has any negative impacts on fuel pressure.
