Hy35 vs fp3052 vs s256/59

I have an AUTO AWD and wanting to piece a nice street setup together. Looking for 400-450whp on E85.

Engine mods: stock 7 bolt, stock cams and Evo 3 intake manifold along with supporting mods.

Given that it has a rebuilt stock converter which of the above turbos would work best with the stock stall?
 
HY35 would probably spool turbo on stock converter if you took the time to make a nice t3 ts manifold.

HY35 would probably spool turbo on stock converter if you took the time to make a nice t3 ts manifold. A s259 on a nice TS T4 would probably get onto the converter too if you went with the 1.00 TS housing and would have the largest power potential based off compressor maps.

I was considering the fp3052 but I know the hy35 flows around 60lbs/min and has more growth potential when I decide to build the motor.

I'm going to have to check out the s259 in TS setup...

Any idea on the BEP housing?

Another option would be a TS hx35 like what peeper has but I would rather be on a budget of about 1k.

If you do decide to go with a holset I would not suggest the bep bolt on housing. Don't get me wrong I love mine, but it's a bit restrictive. I currently have the bep on my 8 blade hx35, e85, stock 6 bolt, and 30psi. I'm just over the 400whp mark(on a mustang dyno). With the higher compression ratio of stock 2g pistons I'm sure you can get closer to 450whp with an identical setup to me, but the bolt on housing won't let you go much farther. T3 would give you much more room for growing.
 
I like the .70A/R T3 BEP housing. I have the 7 blade HX35 and I'm manual, and it is a blast! It spools quick on E85. I hope to have good results when I switch to auto one day! I did lose a few hundred rpm spool going to the T3 and getting a SMIM, but it was worth it. I've hit 58-60 lb/min when it's cool outside. I've still got some cam tuning to do and need to make a better intake pipe!

Yeah I decided that I will not be putting a bep housing just for the fact that I want room to grow. T3 is probably the best way to go but I have to be careful which hot side to choose because its an automatic. I need something that I could spool off the line within 5-7 seconds on the stock converter. I know that may be asking too much but if I have to play with the tune or time gear then so be it. Dont want spray so turbo options are limited....

Being that I have an automatic with a stock stall converter, a T3 HX35 wont do much for any kind of launch. Sure, from a roll It will pull but since I want to start hitting the track a few times I need something spool friendly from a dig.

What I don't want to add (rather not)...Nitrous and/or higher stall converter.

So these are the options that I have researched and/or people have real life proof for stalling on a stock converter.

1. Twin Scroll manifold with **1.25 inch** sized runners mated to an HX35 stock 12cm^ divided housing.

2. 68HTA or 71HTA...both of these turbo can be no problem stalling up yet they flow 47-49lb/air and 51lb/air respectively. Can they reach 400whp thru an auto??

3. FP3052 Nate Crissman proven combo on his red 1g street car using a HKS 272 exhaust cam. Even better results could be had if full e85 or e98 is used.

What I really want to find out is if the HY35 can hold its own at the line. I like the fact that its a 60lb/min turbo but very fast spooling characteristics. My feeling is that it may be able to since its close to a td06 20g and others have shown to spool these turbo. Anyone have more info on this?

The holset thread is mostly related to hx40/35 setups and Im looking for an AUTO Hy35 specifically. Dacagowd has a thread on it but that was 5sp car and even though its informative, Its not helping me decide if this turbo has potential to get up on the converter without nitrous.

Based on wheel specs and housing a/r alone, the HY35 is going to outspool any possible HX35 manifold / turbine housing combo except the DSM bolt-on BEP housing and a properly-set-up twin-scroll manifold and 12cm2 T3 Holset turbine housing.
 
On my hy35 6 bolt on 8:5.1 CR with BC272s and a stock 1g head I am not seeing much power untill 4k then it takes off like a bat out of hell. Now is my tune perfect? No and I also have no cam tuning so that comes into play. This is on a 5 speed though. Dacagowd was showing me his dyno graphs of his Evo 8 on an Hy35 with a stock 2.0 and then with a 2.4. He was making around 200hp at 4k rpm. With the 2.4 he was making double that at 4k. Its a great pump gas turbo but still a little laggy down low. With e85 in your tank you will spool faster. Being Auto will probably result in faster spool up of the same turbo so it might be the route for you to go. Its going to be harder for you to put down 400whp on a 68tha or 71 then the 5 speed guys so going slightler bigger might not be such a bad thing. The only downside is having a custom downpipe made or doing it yourself. If you have a fabricator do it you will have to factory that in against your cost of bolt on applications. I did mine with some friends but its scary LOL.

I see...at this point my bet is to just try it out and see how it responds with a good tune/e85/SD and if it doesn't work out then twin scroll hx35 is the "next affordable" setup to try. What I like about the HY35 is that you don't need nothing fancy to have a kickass setup...hopefully it works
 
One of my buddies is running a Hx35/40 hybrid t3 setup through a stock 2g auto trans. From what I've seen it spools pretty dang quick. I don't know his name on tuners though. And I don't know what rpm it fully spools at.

This video could give you a decent idea though. He starts the pull around 3000rpm and it's fully spooled almost instantly.

On my hx35, bolt on housing, 5 speed (so completely different LOL) I have about 5psi at 2800 in 3rd to give you an idea.
 
I'm in the same boat as you, OP. Keep us(me :p) updated if you decide to go HY35 and stock stall, and if you're able to get it stalled up on the stock converter. I'm also curious how an HX35 8 blade with the bolt on BEP housing would spool on an auto, and if it'd be able to get up on the stock converter.
 
I have an auto HX35 8 blade, BEP housing.
No problems getting on the converter if you wait. Depends on trans temp, if its hot It may take 25 seconds, cool its not bad, like 10-15. I have nitrous to spool it for the track. I have an IPT restall converter but honestly, spool up is the same on a stock and the IPT from my experience. Great turbo, They have done 11.1 in the 1/4 which is blazing quick for a street car. Mine is out of breath currently. Boost comes up to 36psi and is down to 28 or so by 7500rpm.
Really for your power goals, the streetability of a hx35 in a bep housing is hard to beat. I made around 405whp through the auto awd with a stalled converter and on a mustang dyno. That would be no problem giving me 440-450 on a dynojet. The benefits of the BEP is mainly cost, you can always upgrade to a T3 down the line and spend the money on a manifold if you can later.

+1 for the HX35/ BEP combo if you are on a budget.

Thanks for the info untouchablecc....I agree that maybe with cam tuning and a stall tune on e85 it would be good enough. Somewhere I heard that it spools just like a tdo6 20g and if it does then its certainly doable. In order to do so it needs to flash around 3600-3700 RPM's.

The downpipe fabrication is not a problem. We have awesome fabricators in town so it can be done in no time.

Yes I will, the whole point is to have a turbo combo that can spool up and at the same time flow 55-60lb/air. I know it may be asking too much but maybe it can be done.

His car is a 2.0 spyder awd swaped evo 3 intake. So theres a personal experience. I watched the car go down the track at the shootout. He was somewhere in the 11s. So maybe you might wanna rethink your turbo choice. Im not sure how much e85 will help you. Theres also antilag which im not sure how that works on autos but it sounds sweet. He was also on race gas too.
 
Yeah like I said I can spool mine off the line in not too much time. I also have the worst parts to spool off the line, big cams and a SMIM. Both transfer the power band to the higher rpm and bog down low.

Well that's the exact info that I wanted to hear about. The difference between e85 and race gas is negligible so there goes my hope for this setup :notgood: I do have to rethink my turbo choice...

I would like to see how a smaller runner ID would respond. Perhaps this could be the ticket for us auto cars.

Im not saying you can't make it happen but it would take some thinking and lots of trial and error. Its a good turbo to make your power but hard to spool off the line. Im wondering if like and hx40 in a bep would be able to do what you wanna do better. I know that most of the time auto cars put down less hp then 5 speed cars but guys seem to get 500 pretty easy out of that set up. It would probably have the spool time your looking for off the line but im just guessing at this point on spool up vs power. Have you thought about the fp red or any of the fp turbos for your goal?

I completely understand and its appreciated that you could share this info, however I had my doubts about the HY35 able to spool on the stock converter to begin with. This doesn't mean that I wont try because its still an awesome turbo but im looking for the right setup that will meet my needs for both spool and overall airflow potential.

Indeed I keep hearing that a 1.25 ID runner is the best way to go for spool while being able to support around 600-650WHP. After that its to have some restrictions. I don't know of any 1.25 runner manifolds that I can try. I searched but don't it doesn't provide any specification. As far as an FP turbo I would give the 3052 a try because we seen actual results on Nate's 1g auto and it works. The 68hta is another one but I know it wont provide the long term goal, nevertheless its a kickass turbo that hits hard as f**k. (my friend had one) So these are the viable options besides going TS.

Something to think about.

Ive seen you run at Sealy and its a kickass setup 1sic1gb. I had an hx35 7 blade but ended up selling it and now I wish I would of tried it. Another thing is that I don't want to go crazy with cams or intake manifold for that reason. In reality I like Peppers setup and so far seems like the best option out there for the auto.
 
Great info in this thread, thanks. Especially you 1SIC1gb, as I've been thinking about running a bolt on housing HX35 while I piece together the twin-scroll setup and now I think my mind is made up. A cyclone IM should help with stalling it up at the line, as will cams that aren't so heavily top-end focused.
