Well I am just brainstorming some plans for this spring/summer and i decided i will want to rebuild my head.

I'm 90% sure my valve seals are leaking right now and i could use a new timing belt.

I am planning on getting a new oem composite head gasket (that way i won't have to resurafce the block), arp head studs, valve seals. But what else does a head rebuild entail (any write ups?)? Surprisingly i couldn't find anything on vfaq.com...

What else do you recommend i replace when i rebuild my head?

In the end I will only make 400 hp max, as that is what my turbo can make. So I don't think i will need any aftermarket parts besides cams.

Thanks

If you are getting work done I would get it resurfaced anyway to ensure it's flat (at least check). Get the guides checked and/or replaced, and if you want, new valves and a spring kit. Cams are nice and if you don't have them already, the revised lifters.

Edit:
For 400 max, the stock setup will work just fine.

There aren't any "write-up" builds because there are SO MANY different types of setups people run, really it depends on the goals for your car. It sounds like you and I have similar goals in mind and I like budget building so heres a list a good friend and I put together for my 400-450whp build.

-ARP head studs torqed to 85 ft lbs.
-MLS head gasket (My heads already resurfaced)
-engnbldr revised lifters, bronze valve guides, & valves 4G63 Head rebuild kit H/P valves guides 3mm lashers : eBay Motors (item 390166919902 end time Mar-17-10 18:11:03 PDT)
-EVO XIII springs and retainers (you CANNOT use EVO IX)
-Port and polished
-Supertech valve seals
-Cams (I went with FP2s)
-Fidanza cam gears

My timing belt had just been replaced so I didn't budget that into my head build. Street Tuned Motorsports had a great timing belt replacement kit here STM DSM TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT KIT

On my car, my budget head rebuild was some 3g lifters, Evo 8 springs and retainers (the weight difference is crazy), and some new valve stem seals. Added some Comp 101200 cams and some Fidanza cam gears. I only have plans for about 350whp. I went with a Fel-pro composite HG with the ARP studs torqued to spec.

I wish I would have had more money to do a few other things. It would have been nice to get the head checked out, new valves, and some new valve guides, but with limited funds, I think it work just fine.

so there are no issues with the head other than valve stem seal.
no over heating issues, no bent valves.
what is the budget on the head rebuild, not including cams and gears?

so you will want to have the the guides checked and replaced as needed.

not all of this will apply to your build, but you should know.

The head thickness should be measured at the 4 corners of the head before and after it is milled.
New thickness of the head is 5.200 with a min thickness of 5.185, if the head is thinner than the min spec, get a thicker head gasket to restoe thickness betweem 5.200 and 5.185

If the head gets surfaced, DO NOT let the machine shop belt surface the head!!

this is how your head should be surfaced.

the stock sping stand a good chance of being wore out and need replaced.

if you decide to run the stock valves, have this done
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/341288-why-have-your-valves-back-cut.html

if you opt to get the Engnblder valves, I would get the the +1mm, they are the same price, I have installed several sets of his valves and not had issues with them.

also you may want to do this oil port mod...

No issues except for the valve seals, this car is still daily driven.

I figured if i wanted to turn up the boost on my car at some point I would want arp head studs. Then i'll want to fix my valvestem seals. And i should do any other maintenance while the head is off the car.

so how's this:

1. OEM Headgasket - $45
2. ARP Head Studs - $110
3. Timing Belt Kit -$277
4. Valves, Guides, Lifters -$200
5. Supertech Valve Stem Seals - $37
6. Evo 8 Valve Springs/Retainers - ?? Couldn't find anything besides manly evo 8, not sure if that's what you were talking about
7. Oil Port Mod/No Lifter Tick- PRICELESS

Total ~ $700

Would i need any machine work (as long as its not cracked or warperd, which it definately shouldn't be since it runs fine)? I'm only pushing a big 16g, so it isn't going to see that much air flow.

Thanks a lot for all the responses, I have to start saving....

If your valves and guides are good, then you don't need to replace them. If anything just get the valves cleaned and cut.

The revised lifters will get rid of lifter tick for the most part

If you aren't going to be revving past redline or installing aftermarket agressive cams then just get OEM replacements for the springs if they are fatigued.

Don't forget 2 camshaft oil seals (1 for each)

The oil port mod - from what I was informed - is used when you put a 2g head on a 1g block since you will dill the head stud holes out 1mm. the #4 cylinder head stud in the corner of the VC on the head has an oil port that is already roomey enough to have oil flow throughout the head. When it's drilled 1mm bigger, there is no longer room to get oil to that hole so you drill out bigger than the 1mm to just past that hole and back down to the 1mm enlargement.

Bogus correct me if I'm wrong on that part but enlarging the head stud hole on a stock setup, would that really benefit much at all for oil pressure in the head?

Valve stem seals $13

Gen3 Lifters $90

Camshaft seals $10

the reason for the oil port mod #1 is for ANY 4g63 head that has been milled, when milling the head the trough that the oil flows from the block into the head gets smaller, therefore resticting the oil going to the head bolt passage.
Its not so much pressure to the head but volume of flow, when that is reduced, not enough oil is avaiable to fill the HLAs, and feed the turbo form the head.

The oil port mod #2 is what your thinking of Liquid, so you can bolt the 2g head on the 1G block.

I have found that I can get the BC1100 springs cheaper than I can get the OE replacements, SO if I get a NT 4g "grandma" car head in with wore out springs, I install the BC springs, and they work well with the stock retainers.

Thank you, I forgot about mod #1. Yes that would deffinatly help out then.

Sorry to bring up such an old thread, but does the seller you posted the link to sell this kit anymore?

No, unfortunately engnbldr no longer sells valves for our platform. I believe he became ill and closed his doors.

My next recommendation is going with GSC SS valves, bronze valve guides, and Topline revised lifters.
