After much debating, I decided to just rebuild the head while its out of the car, I know its will be a headache later on down the road to do. I have some questions for this process. First off this is what I am thinking of doing.

3g revised lifters $99
Evo III Springs and retainers $275 (RTM racing)
Stainless steel valves from Ebay (engnblder) +1mm oversized $113
Valve seals

1. Should I take the head to a machine shop to have it pressure tested, the guides checked over and decked?
2. I upgraded to ARP head studs, I read that they effect oilflow to the head, should I do oil port mod#1
3. Would it be okay to soda blast the entire head once the cam/valves/lifters/springs are removed?
4. Best way to clean the head and all the small parts.
5. If i go with the 1mm oversize valve, do I need any machine work done to the head its self, I plan on getting a lapping set and lapping the valves by hand.

I want to get all this taken care of an out of the way, because after I'm all set up with my supporting mods, I want to install a more aggressive cam (264/264) and adjustable cam gears to complete my setup.

I did get a price from a shop and they wanted $300 to do a valve job.

What about bead blasting? I read that machine shops bead blast them.

Thanks for the good info, already have the cams rockers and lifters out.

#5 was a dumb question, I should have knew that. Going to go with stock sizes.

Going to call another shop tomorrow to see about a price on having it decked and having them check over the head as well as the valve guides, I would rather not replace them unless I have to.

So Ive been busy and have gotten the head completely disassembled. I noticed my head already has a heat tab on it, so work has been done before? Here is the major problem, I lost ONE keeper, when I was compressing the spring, my spring compressor slipped and it went flying somewhere in my garage never to be found again. So the question is, where the hell can I find a replacement? Would aftermarket keepers from rockauto be okay to use?

Thank god, I actually found the last keeper.

How important is it to remove the oil galley plugs? I can't get mine out and I already stripped the one trying. My plans are to do the oil port mod one, then pressure wash the head and degrease it. Then do a once over with some spray paint.

Anyone have any advice on the galley plugs? I read in a head rebuild they should be removed for cleaning. All I plan on doing to mine is a once over with a pressure washer and some decreaser then getting a coat of spray paint. Do I really need the plugs removed? I'm talking about thesending plugs.

Thanks that's what I have been following. Still concerned about the oil galley plugs though they will not come out.

I would remove them for cleaning. If you are using a power washer and de-greaser, ensure you are able to clean/dry out the guide area as rust can develop. Brake cleaner is also very useful and evaporates quickly.

I was afraid they would definitely need to come out. I'll try to use an extractor to get them out, I stripped both of them. I'm not sure if they were out before and they used loctite putting them back in or what.

I'm going to pressure wash the outside but I know water will still get in, i'm going to blow everything out with compressed air when i'm done and then hit the guides with some oil to keep them from rusting for the time being. I should have all my parts next week to rebuild the head.

well, here we go, time to see if I can get the plugs out. Oh joy.

Update: I got one oil galley plug out by drilling and using an extractor, but I had to weld the extractor to the bolt, after the third attempt it finally backed out. Second plug, same process except I kept snapping the extractors, i've tried everything with no luck. I'm going to take it to a very trusted mechanic tomorrow and see if he can get it out for me as well as a broke manifold stud.
