I tried doing some research on my question but I’m having trouble finding it.

I want to replace my 1996 Eclipse GST 4g63 with a JDM 4g63 from the Galant VR4 or the Evo 1-3 since a website I found is selling it with ECU and wiring, all that ect for “A direct replacement” as they claimed.

Now the question, is that true? Will it bolt up to the 5 speed transmission I have right now? Will I need a different transmission that will work? It might sounds like a dumb question to someone more knowledgeable then me in this, but I just want to make sure before I spend on that engine .

I'm wondering why you want to do this? There's no benefit to the JDM motors, it's just another 7 bolt.
I’m new to this 4g63 scene, I am looking for my options and I found the jdm for $2,500 ish. I need an engine basically, I didn’t know if jdm had or didn’t have any benefits. What you think is my best option to do here?

What happened to yours? Do you have the long block still?

What are your goals for the car? Rebuilding is an option if you are not in dire straights for a vehicle.

For what it’s worth, your transmission will bolt up to the described JDM engine. Make sure to reuse your (from the ‘96 GST) flywheel and starter plate.

As far as being a direct drop in, I’d have to cross reference a few more part numbers but it could be made to work if there were any differences with engine mounts or control electronics.

Another thing you should know.
Galant VR4 = 6 Bolt
EVO 1~3 = 7 Bolt.
So if your car has a 7 bolt engine now, then you will need to replace the flywheel with a 6 bolt one Also you would need to modify some sensor's wirings. It wouldn't be a big deal though.

If it is a evo 3 so 7 bolt same as you have now it would line right up. I have a evo 3 7 bolt right now on my engine stand. That one still had its original intake and exhaust manifold is the only reason i picked it up as those are different and can be quite good.

I have it, but the person I got it from said car sat 4 years and likely it’s because motor was bad. It was a Lien sale so it got taken from or junked, idk something like that.

Eventually I’ll get to checking the motor if it’s okay or can start up (I’ve been busy is why I haven’t gotten to it) but I’ve been trying to gather information to see if a rebuild + or an engine swap would be better and easier. I have the funds to buy another engine and get it done with I just don’t wanna impulse buy an engine out of excitement. I Wanna see my options I guess

Thank you! That’s what I wanted to know

You would need to use your intake manifold ect unless you wanted to change coil pack mount and few other things. But the motor its self will work and bolt right in other then that i am fairly sure. If you just need a engine im sure you could fine one cheaper. We have a used one here we re sealed and put head studs in that could be sold but the shipping to you would likely be costly.
