I personally am looking to do some weight reduction while retaining the quiet/smooth ride, and still having a spare so I can go on the highway without getting flatbedded home.

heres some of my ideas, just normal of course.

CF hood
Ditch all of my stereo and just get upgraded 6x9, 5.25, and 3.5's hooked to the factory amp/deck.
CF Hatch<<<Anyone make one for us?
CF Spoiler<<Anyone make it?
Dimple Drilled/Slotted Rotors

What else is there? I dont wanna tear out all the sound deadening or the spare tire.

just curious does ne body know what kind of weight savings the carbon fiber deck lid cuts off?

Partsweights - DsmWiki

It really depends. The stock 1g hatch w/glass w/out wing is 50lbs. Something like Franks custom fiberglass pin-on hatch weighs 7 lbs, I'm going to assume a carbon fiber one weighs somewhere around 12-15lbs (full assembly w/bolt on capability) so you would save about 10-13lbs or so if you continued to use the stock glass. Of course most carbon fiber/fiberglass hatch's can't support the stock glass, so you'll be using lexan which will also reduce weight.

so ive started my weight redux. might be merged, but idk. 1990 eclipse gst 5spd. went to walmart last night, picked up the most accurate 7.99 dial scale they had. this was just some easy stuff at work. i will be pulling more stuff up, and cutting various metal pieces from the interior that arent needed. i will add more weights soon. any weight that wasnt completely on one line was .5..

stock 90 cd player radio and amp(i guess) and surround-- 10lbs
various console bits, coin holder etc.. 2lbs
rear seat bottom 13lbs
plastic shift boot center console piece-- 1lb
sunviors-- 1lb
map lamp thingy--1lb
various pop out panels from trunk-1lb
rear carpet and pad-- 3lbs
tire cover board--5lbs
jack-- 7lbs
spare hold down bolt thing-- .5lbs
front window trim piece-- .5lb
headliner-- .5lb
spare-- 26lbs
center console- 4.5
console carpet panels-- .5 lbs

subtotal 77.5lbs

my 1990 gs-t weighed 2770lbs at the track years back, bone stock, full weight
my current 1991 talon awd weighed 3040 when it was bone stock full interior.

Is this going to be a track only car?
For the amount of stuff removed, you would be lucky to drop a .1sec at the track
They typically say 100lbs is worth a ~tenth/sec.
I would rather keep all that stuff but that's my preference. Especially the spare tire, jack, etc if you'll be driving on the street

I have completely gutted my interior. I will let you know final weight. I mean this is everything, all the metal brackets, all the ac components, etc. Anything that is not required is not there.

My talon has also gone through a weight reduction process. I removed the complete airconditioning system. After that I removed the cruise control unit and got a non-cruise control cable. I also removed the back seats of my car. It was alot for foam seats, plus its annoying having a coupe and people siting in the back. they are just insurance seats. I removed the stock cd/stereo radio unit which was really heavy due to the face that it was a 1991 cd player. I also removed the air can for the intake which was all rusted and weighed at least 8 lbs. The final item I removed was the abs system from my car. I don't know what the grand total is but I am sure its well over 100lbs. I think the a/c was a third of the weight.

I agree. They do seem low. You should of felt my trash can. After all my interior junk was gutted. Also the factory seats do put some weight in the cars to, but not the back ones.

Well. I know the weights do seem low. Like I said brand new 7.99 scale. Not a postal scale or nothing but I tried a 5lb weight and a 25lb dumbbell and both were right on. I do know sometimes weight can be deceiving. And this is not my daily. It will be insured, but not a daily. Ill probably keep the heater core for defrosting purposes but everything else is going away. Though I'm keeping the spoiler I kinda like it.

I can't believe I've already found 77lbs from just that stuff and nothing is really gone. Lots of wiring, brackets and panels left to get out still! Not to mention the ac and ps stuffs!

Dump all the AC & the water heater etc from under the dash.
The long plastic demister section is all I have, with the centre
blocked with sheet metal & 2x 12v elec hair dryers fitted to
the sheet metal in the middle facing 45deg each to feed L <> R.
Instant demister that weighs stuff all. Stop eating :tease: pizza
Cheers !

LOL. Pics?

Edit: Not sure if it's in the thread already but all of that stuff under there weighs 30 lbs. Or atleast mine did.

Ok here's a pic of my 2x 12v hair dryers demister setup.
The 90deg folded sheet metal in grey blocks off where the
heater used to mate up to it. The hair dryers have 2 speeds
& both on low speed is very quiet. Weighs bugger all realy.
Cost $14 each from a boat shop.

even with going to all these lengths to shed weight, there is no getting around the fact that the body itself is very heavy. I had a '88 RX-7 before my Talon and all the things you take for granted such as the doors, hood, and hatch are sooooooo very much heavier on DSM compared to the aluminum RX-7.
