I personally am looking to do some weight reduction while retaining the quiet/smooth ride, and still having a spare so I can go on the highway without getting flatbedded home.

heres some of my ideas, just normal of course.

CF hood
Ditch all of my stereo and just get upgraded 6x9, 5.25, and 3.5's hooked to the factory amp/deck.
CF Hatch<<<Anyone make one for us?
CF Spoiler<<Anyone make it?
Dimple Drilled/Slotted Rotors

What else is there? I dont wanna tear out all the sound deadening or the spare tire.

Odyssey Battery PC680 - Odyssey Drycell Batteries - summitracing.com

This is the one I have...The best lightweight battery to get is from Braille comes in at about 6 lbs. I believe. But it's almost twice the cost of the odyssey which weighs 14-15lbs. My little battery worked great until my car started eating batteries, something started draining battery life and I haven't been able to track it down yet. I'm on my third after I went back to regular car batteries, finally hooked up a temporary solution LOL.

for alot of people, just go on a diet, lose anywhere from 10-50 lbs. go faster and get some girls. a 2 for 1 deal

Well my flyweight talon has been parted so I never got a real "weight" on it. I just picked up a new project and if I end up keeping it, it will see some weight loss although in a much "cleaner" fashion then the first car. I'll get results up if I keep the car.

Nice, i am stripping the sound deadening, and power washing the carpets as well as cleaning all the seats in the car. Ill post pics when i get it done

Sound deadening should result in about 25lb. weight loss, and according to those who have kept their carpeting the noise isn't unbearable at all.

I have filled 1 gallon zip lock bag full and about 3/5 of another 1 gallon zip lock bag, but i have half of the trunk to finish.

So far about 20 more lbs out of the car.

I did this to my last awd i did not notice any more noise than before and i had a 3 in exhaust that was quite.

I have taken out the sound deadening and did not put the carpet back in, and when on the highway at a 70mph speed and also when starting up the car, I'll notice a bit louder sounds from near the fire wall on the passanger side...? But yeah besides that nothing at all, and even the little bit that is louder is by no way unbarable.
I was reading through the Haynes book the other day about the SRS system, and they were explaining to "be careful when removing the passenger side airbag because it is heavier than it looks." Right then I knew that that was comin out!!! I took out the airbag, weighed it on my scale, came in at 9lbs, and when I weight myself on that scale it is consistently about 3lbs off, so about 12lbs for the passenger side airbag. I put some felt that matched the color of the interior in it's place, and bam!! Extra shelving unit :thumb: About another 10lbs was from the ABS computer (my ABS didn't work anyway) on the passenger side just under the glove box, the metal cover that protected the computer, as well as the metal plate that the computer was attatched to. So in about 30 minutes, there goes another ~20 quick pounds. You'll just have to deal with the SRS red warning light on (unless you can take it off with a datalogger) and an odd little hole in your dash that so far my friend has mistaken for a fire-pit :|

Ben :talon:

LOL @ fire pit.

Have you gave any thought to getting rid of all the ABS equipment? I am in a 90 TSi that never had it, but I figure for yourself it might be a little more weight that could be removed from a dead system that from the looks of it is not ever going to be used again.

YES!!! And thank you for bringing that up, I forgot about it earlier!! I DO want to get rid of the entire ABS system...I have an appointment next week to have ALL of the air conditioning uninstalled professionally, and I was going to bring it up to them over there. But yeah how much is even in the ABS setup if you have any idea at all? I didn't know if it was solely the computer chip that told the brakes how to act in a different way or if it was an entire 'organ' of the car or what. But yes, that is something I definetely want to be rid of as well!!

Ben :talon:

Edit: I found the abs stuff and what's all involved in that, so I got that now :) thanks

Back from the dead again:

Well dropped my rusted ass awd 1g gas tank and it weighed
42 lbs empty.

Did not weigh the new one that went in.

Complete interior harness the whole shebang:
Across the frame under dash to the fuse box inside and all the way to the trunk.
20 lbs

Ok I am going to be buying a 97 GSX and I am going to be wanting to put her on a diet. From everyones past experience, what have they found that they didn't need on the car, that the car doesn't need to run? Anything that I can cut off, unbolt off, or just plain replace with something lighter.

I.e. Backseats, trunk guts, AC...etc....etc...etc
My goals are to run with corvettes at an early stage of the build, because Im lighter.

SJ

A/C (pump, condensor, lines, evaporator, blower)
Power steering
Rear of the interior (carpet, panels, brackets that hold the panels on, spare tire and tools, rear seat, etc.)
Radio and all the equipment like speakers
Bumper supports (not much for you since it is a 2g)
Heater core
15" wheels
Headliner
Glove box
Waher bottles
Rear wiper and motor
Antenna and motor
Horns
Emissions
Wiring (speaker, a/c system, horn, emission sensor wiring, washer bottle, wiper motor, radio)

That is the stuff I have removed that I can think of. I will add more if I think of anything.

Ok so I read every post about weight reduction and have learned alot of usefull tips that I will be doing to my 96GST Spyder once I get home from over seas ( in nov. ). Only thing is I dont see any info about spyders. Im not suprised as I know there arnt many of them in the tuning world for obvious reasons but I got a great deal on mine concidering it already had things like a 6 bolt swap, and brand new trans. ect... So the main thing is Im gonna install new carpet (sound deadner removed) but I want to take out the back seats. Also I want to take out everything that has to do with the top going down and up ( ie motor, gear box, linkages ect..) as I will never put the top down. Any ideas on how to do this and have it still look clean or unnoticable besides the seats being gone? Thanks for any tips as I am new to the dsm world but Im extremely addicted already. Worse than I ever was with my gsr or mustang... LOL

As far as weight reduction..:

front crash bar
rear crash bar
a/c and everything that has to do with it
passenger seat
rear seat
spar tire and jack
power steering and components
stock fans replaced with slim fans in front of radiator
rear seat belt's and all the brackets
gas tank (replaced by fuel cell)
sound deadning in the rear
stock fuel lines
headliner... (was falling off so took it out)
all solenoids under the hood
bracket from block to intake manifold
rear speakers
front deck (some assholes broke into my car and took it) and they killed my window :'(
rear wiper motor, wiper and the lines
all washer reservoirs and motors
fog lights
cruise control.. (custom throttle cable)
fadinza aluminum flywheel
charcoal canister and all emissions (includes egr block off and fiav delete)
battery bracket (battery sits on sub frame)
balance shafts removed

If you know of any other things to take out let me know, cause i wanna go lightweight..
I might have missed a few things but for the most part thats all of it.

I wanna lose around 500lbs. I am about 100 lbs or so of that goal.

Online

I wanna know what you did you lose weight. PICS PLEASE

Light weight wheels.
Heater core/blower motor/vents.
All sound deadening material.
Air bags/SRS module.
Interior panels (not sure if you want to keep full interior).
Light weight battery (if you don't have one already).
Carbon fiber hood.
Power lock/window mechanisms (if you have them or would want to install manual stuff).
Random stuff between door panel and door.
Carpet.

Not sure if all of this will be possible or stuff you'd be willing to remove, but I am just thinking out loud. You can also check out this thread as I pulled some of my suggestions from it:

I got a little bit crazy, about the only thing I have left is the sound deadening. That and replacing things with the lightweight versions, like carbon fiber panels and lexan. That is obvioulsy an unfinished pic, it will have an aluminum skin here in a bit.

Man 500lbs is going to be hard! How do you figure that you are only 100 away? I was thinking more like 200 away, at the most!Couple more ways are carbon fiber hood, hatch, and maybe fenders not sure if there out. Also a guy up here had a carbon fiber roof skin made for his hatch. I know AMS makes carbon fiber roofs for EVO's, but i don't think they are or plan to make them for a 1g dsm. Maybe something custom. Go with all lexan windows( i'm not real sure if you plan on makin a street car or what your making, but lexan windows are not legal for the street) Power window motors, if you have them. A big weight reduction is your dash. You can get race dash's that do nothing but hold gauges. You have pretty much did all the easy things as of now. It's starting to get harder and being more of a pain then it's worth.
