im starting this forum like a poll. i want to know (and sure others too) how many of you tuners have actually gotten crank walk on there 2g and wanna hear all the people that havent. please just leave a reply if u have gotten it or not. thanx-greatly appreciated

just wanna see how common everyone makes it seem

This is pointless really because I bet there are a few DSMs on here that have crankwalk and don't know it yet, I didn't know it till I did a little research and had it checked by dropping the bottom end. By then it was too late. With so many little quirky things that go wrong with DSMs (Lifter tick, poorly adjusted clutches Leaky cylinders/slave and master etc, etc) Crankwalk is often over looked and isn't caught till it is too late and sometimes isn't caught till after the car goes on to some other poor soul.

So there is no need to (cry) or even (worry) about it... Just build a 6 bolt and go about your business! The motor is a better platform anyway so there really is no down side to it. I will own another 2G and will continue to own this one, but I will DEFINETLY build 6 bolt motors for any 2g car I own. Period... good luck and happy modding, I have givin my 2 pennies on this topic

When I got the car, the bottom end was totally ####ed up. Whoever had the car before me took out two of the rod bearings and tried to run it. That or those two just completely shredded away but I doubt it, there wasn't anything in the oil pan. The other bearings looked alright, it had 160,000k on it, I don't really know. I still have the thing sitting in my garage.

I replaced it with a 98' 7-bolt motor from a Mitsubishi RVR with 30k and no crankwalk yet, I think I have a ways to go though. I've only put about 2000 miles on it since I put it in last summer.

78.43% - No CW Yet
21.57% - CW

So it appears 1 in 5 of our cars will develop crankwalk within its lifetime.

Here's a few tips on avoiding crankwalk

- Let the vehicle warm up before you move it
The common theory is that the vehicle does not build up sufficient oil pressure, helping to cause crankwalk. Let the vehicle warm up before you drive it - besides, that's always good with a turbo motor anyway!
- Upper clutch sensor removal
This lets you start your vehicle without pushing in the clutch. This will avoid wear, which is a great idea to avoid something that will kill the bearings - thus causing crankwalk. Make sure you're in neutral.
- Balance shaft elimination
Since it's a known point of failure, get rid of it. Less stress, less damage.
- Regular maintenance
Especially with the clutch hydraulics, this is important. Make sure the hydraulics look good and if you see any issues, make sure you address them.
- 6 bolt swap
This only helps and makes it less common. ALL VEHICLES, regardless of make, model, year, place of manufacture, whatever, can develop crankwalk. Learn this and accept it. 7 bolt 4G63 motors are just notorious for it.
- Avoid excessive use of the clutch
Less wear means less crankwalk.

somebody else already put this post, you just copied and pasted this from an earlier post as tho it was your own LOL....10/14/2002 page 2 or 3 LOL

Good questions fellas and to tell you the truth the info I posted is all the info I have besides the cars I have looked at myself. The problem is this, there are many many DSMs out there rolling around that have it and don't know they do, so without knowing how many cases there really are out there there is no way to compare that number to the number of total DSMs sold.

This is pointless really because I bet there are a few DSMs on here that have crankwalk and don't know it yet, I didn't know it till I did a little research and had it checked by dropping the bottom end. SEE!!

My 1998 walked at 77,507. She walked so far she destroyed 3 of the cylinders. Mitsu installed a brand new 4g63 that is supposively cw free? Hope this does not happen again.:dsm:

This has probably already been said but I'm not going to read through 17 more pages of text to see if it has. CW FREE? :hmm:

My '99 GSX had the crank end play measured out of spec over 3 years and 60,000 miles ago. In the three years since it was determined to be starting to walk I drove it until there was 115,000 on the odometer, I have drag raced it countless times and got the car into the 12's with a 16G and the stock cams, I have done dozens of autocross and road race events flogging the engine to redline way to often.

I just pulled the engine out while it was still working fine because I finally finished my 2.3 build and I was sick of waiting for it to die as it seemed like it would never happen.

Bought the car 53,000k's first clutch job, guy said I had CW. He said the previous owner had it aswell (sales manager at Dodge/Chrysler)and replaced the bearings, and I will need a new crank to FIX it. Never was a 6 bolt mentioned. I was new to DSM's at the time so I didn't evev know about CW let alone a 6 bolt swap. This guy was the MAN to see with your DSM though, so I trusted him. My car lasted not even 10,000k's before CW ripped off my crank angle sensor. My car had no problems when I went to get the clutch put it, it got "fixed" and then dies not 10k later.. Needless to say I was happy. I called the guy that "fixed" my car and asked him if there was any sort of warrinty for this? He tells me no one will warrinty a 7 bolt, Well the other DSM guy in town that just ripped my motor out said he will fix it and warrinty it. No deal.. big supprise.
So did I fix the 7 bolt? Nope I want a 6 bolt I tell the guy. Fully rebuilt, all good.
After about 3 months the rod snaps and flys out the side of my motor at 100mph (cruising) I can't tell but to me it looks as though the end cap on the rod lost a nut and then the 1 bolt holding it on lasted a lil while before the wear and tear pulled the rod off the crank and snaped the bolt off. My cap looks more like this ( than this C.
So I bought a 1g FWD all done up for less than my previous rebuilds cost. Guy had just put $8000 into it and I got it for $3000. Swap that motor in my 2g. good idea huh? well a month later I CW'd the 90 laser due to aftermarket oil pump failure.
Pulled the motor out of the laser bought a used block and stole the crank and put it in the laser block, droped it in my 2g. It's now sitting in my garage. Running.... I am nervous.. whats next.. I built this whole one myself though so next time I can fix it easier.
I should also add I am on tranny #2 (needs rebuild now though so #3) and t-case #3 , T-cases were 100% my fault though as I replaced the fluid and the drain bolt backed out.. 2x's :ohdamn:
The good thing is I never get to drive my car so it only has 106000 km or 65865.346 mi. depending on your side of the boarder.

I have a 95 that crankwalked about a month after I put a new clutch in LOL. Oh well, on to bigger and better things with a built 6 bolt.

I've always wondered..do auto 7 bolts crankwalk?

i have a 98 gst 7bolt that crank walked at 130k, im at 140k right now and it pulls hard. CW is very rare and im sick of hearing about it in the 2gs. Alot of motors have it and you just dont hear about it unless it's a DSM. Our motors are very old, you just expect any old motor to walk. I cant stress enough how much it sucks to hear people troll and talk trash on dsm motors just because most dsm owners don't know shit about dsm maintenance

160k and no CW just yet, tho i do believe the 1st owner rebuild the motor. 50k ago
