the car was ok before this the only problem was that when i switch gears the rpms will drop to 0 and the car would shut off....but now it wont even start....it only does when i press the gas pedal but the motor sounds really bad.....and when i let go the gas the car shuts off

i thought it was the battery
took it to autozone to get it checked and they told me the battery is no good
so i bought a brand new battery
put in the battery and still nothing

  1. Does it turn over when your trying to start it?
I'm assuming the answer is yes since you mentioned you can get it to run but it sounds terrible.
  2. Have you checked for spark on all (4) cylinders?
To do it remove each spark plug one at a time and then plug it back into the spark plug wire. Have someone turn the car over while your grounding the spark plug to the valve cover (with it plugged into the wire) and look for it sparking between the electrodes.
  3. Have you checked for fuel at the rail?
A quick and easy way to check and see if fuel is making it to the fuel rail grab a ratchet, 10mm socket, extension, and a cup thats bigger than a DIXIE cup that you don't mind ruining. Pull the fuel line coming off the passenger side of the fuel rail and becareful because it might be pressurized so take your time. Catch any fuel that spilt with that cup or a few rags. Now put the end of the fuel line you just pulled off into the cup and have a buddy try starting your car. Instantly you should see gas come out of that line and BE CAREFUL that cup will fill up fast!
  4. Have you checked you timing?
From what your describing in your OP it sounds like theres a good chance the timing belt might have slipped. Follow this link to the tech articles 1g/2g Timing Belt Alignment Check

When you replaced your intake did you plug you MAF back in? It's important that you recirculate that bov since that can just compound the problems with the car. Post up what you find, if I was a betting man though your timings going to be off.
