Trying to decide on what turbo I want to run. I would like to be around 400-450hp. Street & strip use. Will have the supporting fuel mods, dsm link, full exhaust, upgraded head work with some 272s. What is everyones opinions on what turbo to run on a 98 AUTO
 
Well you wont hit 450 who on a 16g for sure. But honestly you might has well go for a holder it'll be easier to obtain your desired power and holders are well priced and super reliable. If your stuck on the 18g though then go for that I'm not sure what people have pushed with a 18g and supporting mods. Btw will you be running on e85?

E85 will make a world of difference at the end of the day with what power you can pull out of the motor

Stock trans? Run the 16G.

Its auto, from what I read you can beat them up pretty good before having to do any upgrades besides a shift box

E85 is a good option for me, several stations around here. 20G I was thinking as well price is not far off from a 18g

A td05h 20g would not work well for autox, or road race. My car surges pretty bad if i go wot under 4,000 rpm's, but being a manual i have control over the situation. On an autox automatic car i would run an evo3 16g and e85.
 
I have similar goals and I'm going to push my B16G as far as I can on E85. I'm also auto.

Fyi. Auto trans will be good for a long time if maintained correctly. Its been proven to over 500whp when taken care of.

The only stock-appearing turbo that will get you to 400-450whp with ease is probably the 68HTA...and you're still going to need lots of boost, a pile of supporting mods, a good tune, and E85 or race fuel to get it done.
 
The 18g is a good turbo, a 20g is usable if you know how to drive and 400whp can be achieved with both turbos. I've autocrossed with a 18g and a 20g, they both are hard hitting turbos so if you learn the powerband of them you shouldn't have a problem.
 
My 18g is a great turbo, its going to fulfill my needs, but it will be a street car, maybe track from time to time. So the 18g or 20g should keep you happy.

I'll take you for a ride in my car and show you what happens when you hit 35psi before 4,000 rpm's on a td05h 20g, it's really not pretty. As justin mentioned, if you're really set on that power level, a 68hta is probably the best bet, although i've heard they surge as well.

Really any turbo with a large compressor mated to a small turbine like a TD05H that spools quick and gives you big airflow numbers before the engine can put that airflow to good use is going to surge like crazy. Stock cams and/or intake manifold are only going to highlight this issue even more.
