hi, i wona upgrade my turbo on the gsx, and there is so many choices dont know which one to buy, so i asking you pepz wich turbo is best for under 1k for street/strip setup thanks,

don't get rid of the mani, just mod it to fit the garrett. weld a garret flange on the output and port it to the inside of the mani. then weld a wastegate flange onto the #1 exhaust runner and cut a hole in the mani to match the wastegate. i was going to mod my 2g mani for the garrett but i picked up the turbonetics cast mani for only $275. for me it just wasn't worth the effort to save a few hundred bones...

you can also save some cash by building your own intercooler piping. i would build the intercooler piping all the way to the throttle body, ditch the tb elbow all together (its only like 2.125" id)

Why I didn't think to get a garrett flange welded to the mani is beyond me, but sounds like a good idea due to having a good fabrication resource!:p

So, I think the 50-trim stg III .63 a/r is the blower to get huh? I like Garrett TURBOS* (Better larryd?) and this is a good chance to get one on my car. THe 20g has a shaft problem at high boost I understand, and the Garrett has a nice 360* thrust bearing so it makes sense in that department.

I was also contemplating welding the W/G to the collector area and looping it back in the down pipe. From what I hear the response and ability to hold boost w/o creep is dramatically reduced. Seems logical.

WHat do people think of that?

Nick

Buy my l3r setup. Turbo, manifold, wastegate, o2 housing, lines.

Worked just fine on my stock motor. Spooled fast, hit hard, and made great power.

UNREAL-
I can't afford it.
I'm doin most of this project in DIY mode anyways, so that would take all the fun out of it!

I'm *almost completly sold on the Garrett solution, if theres a better reason not to, I'd like to hear it.

Now, the question at hand.

What turbo will I be able to push the most amount of HP out of the stock engine?

Lag is not an issue. I dont cry about response.I only want to maximise my setup, while obtaining some reliaibility.

I appreciate the suggestions.

Thanks,
Nick
:dsm:

I am running a frank 7 on my stock bottom end with arp head studs and balance shafts removed. Can't get much larger than that, as a bolt-on to your 2g manifold.

A Frank 7? Isn't that like a 600+ HP maker at least?
I'm not the most savvy o' DSMer, but I do know that our engine won't handle 600 HP reliably.
Looks like its pretty Nasty tho. Perfect for FWD being large enough to be able to ingest small children and animals, yes?
I kill me....
Ah hem.

I would recommend the 50 trim, stage3, .63 AR Garrett turbo. This will give you the potential to make real good power. I usually recommned this turbo on most street cars.

We are also selling turbo kits starting at $1550 and thats with the 50trim wheel at no extra cost. T3/T4 Turbo, 35mm Tial, 02 Housing, 321 SS Header, lines, etc. If you are wanting to do all the fabrication yourself then we can sell you just the turbo.

I don't believe any of our 2.0 liter engines can put any of these large turbos recomended, into their max effeciency range.

I don't have the supporting mods to make anything close to 600hp, I would be satisfied with somewhere in the ballpark of 475hp to the wheels, and I am very confident that the stock bottom end can handle that.

When you shoot nitrous into a turbo'd system, you are essentiall "upping" the boost. You are adding a significantly more oxygen (remember N2O is 33% oxygen and real air is only 20-some-odd% oxygen). So N2O plus a turbo means a LOT of boost. So, dial down the boost by about 4psi. That will safely ensure you don't blow your internals.

Then you have to check to make sure you've got a good a/f ratio to go with your new oxygen.

And your new oxygen is coming in ICE-COLD, which means a more dense air mixture. You need to add more fuel to keep the a/f ratio correct and prevent detonation.

Its possible, and done quite often at the drag strip.

Run a search on this...

Its been discussed more times than crankwalk has happened on 4G63's. :p (just a joke!!!!!)

Also someone on this forum has posted a Comparison of the two to tell you the differences in both, personally i say hahn if you just want "ride around town pep" because it has a smaller turbo and can spool quicker.

I beg to differ. BOTH the kits have all of the parts that will make a turbocharger simply function on your car (I say "simply function" because I feel injectors make it REALLY function well). The Hahn kit doesn't have any component I have heard to be better than on the Star kit. Both kits prices vary from vendor-to-vendor but are roughly the same. My Stage 2 Star kit was $3250.00 with the e-trim turbo & HKS SSQBOV (2799.00 without those two options!). The Star kit has a couple benefits over the Hahn kit.

The Star Stage 2 kit has a larger front-mount Spearco intercooler. Hahn's kit has a smallish side-mount intercooler. For more $$$ Hahn will add the FMIC.

Also beautiful polished stainless steel intercooler piping (where as Hahn's has black piping).

The Hahn kit has been out the longest and is more widely known among 420a enthusiasts, that is why the Hahn kit is usually recommended.

I have one of the newer Star Stage 2 kits with the t3/t4 turbo (and 'E trim turbo' option). I have driven the car a lot in the past four months at 7psi and it has worked perfectly fine for me. I was very happy with the parts chosen to be included with this kit and am very happy with the performance and sound of my car using the Star kit.

I don't know what power level 7psi & t3/t4E has put me into until I get a dyno, but to give myself an idea I raced my friends 1995 Camaro Z28 (stock except K&N filter so he has 303-310hp). I started my pull in 3rd gear; he has an automatic transmission so driver error on his part wasn't at all a factor. The torque of his V8 allowed a little leap in front of me but not for long. I very slowly pulled away from him and kept pulling. That was only at 7psi. His car does weigh a few hundred pounds more then mine so I am around 250hp+. When I get my 310cc injectors I will keep my boost at 9psi until I can afford internals.

I am not trying to fuel YET ANOTHER Hahn vs Star forum-war but am simply laying down some facts I have observed. By the way, I did notice the instructions that came with the Star kit were HORRIBLE (glad there was vfaq.com during the install). Hahn probably has much better technical support also :) Good luck boostin'

Personally, both kits are good. However, I don't trust Whyatt and his "Star" company. I don't trust anyone who you can't get ahold of and that doesn't have tech support. If I have a question about anything, I called HAHN and they keep track of what I do to my car and have great tech support and can answer questions about what i should do next.

You will spend extra money with hahn, but i feel its worth it for having a strong company backing their product. I personally feel star could go out of business any day.

 What is the best turbo for my brothers 1G gst ? We have the monnnnney (well it took a while) for it so i would like to know what is the best turbo in the market, there's Turbos-Garrett (Garrett T3/T4 Series Turbos $700.00 ), also Turbos-Hybrid (Extreme Turbo & DSM Performance ETE73 $1,834.00 ), and Turbos-Mitsubishi (Mitsubishi 20G Turbo for $1,000) we are already in tage 2 for the 400 hp
