Resolved 90 Tach Filter Hacked (up)

My 90 Eclipse started having an issue with the tach breaking down (needle falling to 0) when it rolls above about 3500 rpm. Odd thing I noticed, the tach "revives" as soon as I lift off the pedal.

I've read tons of threads, with reported fixes by replacing the filter, bypassing the filter, updating the ECU, coil & transistor, et al. Someone suggested measuring a known good filter to see what the cap and resistor values were. Assuming mine was bad, I dug in. It was mounted here on my intake.

The epoxy potting was really cloudy from exposure, so I wet it and was able to make out the values: 2.2K ohm resistor and 2.2 nf cap.

I measured the resistor from the connector and it was still barely in spec, 2.29K. I couldn't get anything on the cap because, for the extremely low value caps, my meter needs it to be plugged into some holes on the meter. I reasoned the cap must be bad, so decided to open it up. I used a heat gun to soften the epoxy, then carefully dug the material out. I only heated it just enough to soften the glue. But I had to reheat it multiple times because it cooled off pretty quick.

I clipped the cap out and it measured high also, around 2.4nf I think. So it was not crazy out of spec. I had some of those caps, so I soldered one in, and tried it out. Too bad, no joy! Next I decided to try the bypass trick. Still didn't work. Back to the forum to finish reading an old thread by Obsidian. The bypass worked for him. Near the end, Steve (wiseman) reasoned the filter may only be there to clean up the signal when/if it gets dirty or to reduce interference.
"It possible that the noise filter is just that, a way to reduce the electrical noise produced from this signal so that it doesn't effect the radio rather than some sort of conditioning required for the gauge cluster. That would explain why just shorting the two pins makes the tach work as does a resistor between the two."

I read tales on other forums where people had upgraded their old points distributors to HEI, and it had messed up their tachs. They too where sharing schematics of various noise filters to clean up their erratic tachometers. Mitsubishi engineers anticipated some noise, or saw it, because the svc manual schematic shows shielding on both sides of the filter (blue).

So now I'm thinking the tach gate is my issue all along. If the caps in that are bad, then the conditioning they're supposed to perform is not happening! I'll try to measure it tomorrow. And as far as the people where the bypass worked, maybe the issue they had was that their noise filter was open, or they didn't have a filter, so installing the jumper just closed the circuit and their tachs worked.

On a side note, my car has a 91 ECU, and a 90 coil, transistor and tach. Only other 91+ sensor related item is the IAC. But I think I read that nobody could get the tach to work with the 91+ ECUs without also adding 91+ coil, transistor and gauge pack. Is that true? Because, until recently, my tach had been working fine for 10s of thousands of miles.

Dont know if you resolved the issue or not but the clusters from what i understand are NOT interchangeable.
I swapped my 91+ harness into my '90 chassis and tried to keep the '90 cluster and it did the same thing. Swapped in my 93 cluster and it works perfect.

I dont know specifics on why it doesnt work or what the difference is but thats my experience. I believe the Cluster, ignition and wiring harness all need to match?
 
Anfurnyy, I had seen that very thing in other people's experiences. I'm stubborn, so I'll keep hammering at it until I find what's broke. Meanwhile I tried:
-new aftermarket coil pack that has the tach generator module on it. No change.
-used 90 coil pack with the tach gen box, didn't fix it either.
-replaced a few caps on the tach board, nope.

I opened up the used tach box, only resistors and diodes, no caps, so not changing those just yet.
I mentioned originally that the tach recovers as soon as I let off the pedal, even with RPM winding down from 4500+ RPM. I think that is because the ECU cuts spark when it decelerates down, but not sure. Anybody know about that?

Lastly, I happened to notice there is not a noise filter on the intake manifold. [Correction: P/N MB542494 is the tach filter, I have that. It looks like the condenser in a distributer].

My Galant has one on the intake right above the coil, just like the picture below.
Anyway, I found the wire (black w/white stripe) for it wrapped up under the corner of the manifold. I think it's to prevent ignition noise in the radio, or possibly fuel pump noise. So maybe the tach is picking up the noise that MIA condenser is supposed to suppress.

Oh, also going to try a ferrite yoke on the tach wire, and a cap across the fuel pump wires.

So I think I'm narrowing in on the problem. Since the tach recovers when the ignition load drops, it is likely the tach is okay. But it is overwhelmed with EMI...possibly due to the zener diode in the tach generator box on the coil pack, or low quality capacitor I replaced in the tach filter. With the ECU seemingly not having issue with the signal it receives from the tach generator box, the filter becomes one focal point. So I'll replace that cap with a known good one. Also will install ferrite toroid rings which I've read will help absorb EMI from the coil and transistor, and another one installed across the fuel pump power leads.
I measured the condenser filter on the passenger firewall...supposed to be 1 uf, but it measures at half of that. Another thing I'm going to do is run a piece of shielded flexible coax from the tach generator box to the filter, and from the filter to the tach.

Interested to as year's ago we did a 91+ ecu in 90 car and had the same tach issue. Always read correctly in link and car ran perfect but tach would freak out above 3500 rpm and he always just put up with it as we did not think there was a fix. Think we also had to invert IAC wires too.

This was the fix back in the day, though these are no longer available. If you can reverse engineer it from a few pictures and rough descriptions then you can save yourself some headache: DSMChips Tach Adapter

Pow! Your posts caused explosions in my brain! But before I get into that bit, here is what I found yesterday.
I was going to buy a condenser for the black w/white striped wire just hanging near the back/driver side corner of my intake manifold. $10+ is annoying for a capacitor (costing pennies) mounted in a metal tube with a wire and clamp! So I made a couple of them...one for the stray wire, one to put on the fuel pump connectors. I found a scrap tube, cut it in half, then attached the cap and a ring terminal. The I remembered I had a box of empty shells, which the cap fit into nicely. The one for the pump was .1uf/500V, the coil power filter was 1uf/50V. FYI, best I could figure out, the one for the unused wire is a filter for the coil's power feed.

Following up on the jed344 & 19Eclipse90 mentions of Jeff's fix. When I started seeing this issue, I found posts here saying one way around it was to go to the next gen coil/power transistor/gauge. Can't remember if that also required an ecu upgrade to 91+. Background - my car once belonged to Sean and Terry Glazar, driven by Jack Culotta. Way back when, Tom and Dave (ECM Link owners) burned a chip for them.

So when I blew a ground trace on my ECU (poking around in my ignition relay while plugged in and cover off :nono:), I swapped in my spare GVR4 ECU, and it worked fine. I took my 90 ECU to Dave to fix. Meanwhile, the 91 ECU, it's still installed. Yeah, so that's why your posts about requiring a tach fix with the 91+ ECU set off bells. I don't know if pins #6 & #14 are swapped in the harness, or whether the car will even run if they're not??? But it is and has been running. I don't drive it often, so I didn't connect the two events (i.e., ECU swap and tach breaking). So today I opened up this 90 ECU and it's not like the one in Jeff's internal fix install procedure, presumably indicating it is a 90. The whole point of this story is: What if the reason my tach isn't working, is because there is a 91 ECU (GVR4 spare) in my 90 Eclipse??? I'm going out in the rain to take it (91) out, and put the 90 back in.
As an aside, I found out that when I bought my car, the "90 ECU" was actually a EPROM board (socketed) from an 89 FWD Mirage/Colt turbo, with reburned E943 EPROM (Galant VR4) by ECMtuning, installed in the original Federal 90 Eclipse GSX. Supposedly, the original MD145903 ECU was non-EPROM. 😥 🥜s

But...I did install the 1uf "44" condenser. Also opened the tach noise filter again and jacked up the OEM cap from 2.2nf to 15nf. Ran down the road and the tach didn't hardly move off 0 at all. So busted it open again, lowering the cap to 10nf. Then I got a little more movement, but only up to about 1K RPM. Finally I put the factory 2.2nf value cap back, and my test run showed the tach about where it was before, i.e., starts dropping to zero when accelerating past 3500, and recovers during deccel even if past 6K. I haven't tried to go lower than stock on the cap, but I'm thinking about it. The only thing is, as you lower its value, the less filtering of EMI (hi freq) interference. But maybe as the ignition components, and particularly the tach itself age, it can't "see" the signal because its too quiet, weak?? I'm just a novice at this btw. I'll probably try it at like 1.1 ( or just 1nf) out of curiosity. After that, like next week I will replace the white wire to the tach with coax, wrap that end 5-6 times around a ferrite ring and see what happens. If none of that pans out, I'll start reverse engineering Jeff's chip. What I can't see from his install pictures, is what looks like a surface "flake" size chip on one end (maybe a cap or resistor) and exactly how it's all connected on the back of the board. Maybe somebody here has pictures, or knows? Maybe he'll tell me, or post for the community, since he's not doing them anymore. By the way, this will be my 30th post...ending my 15-ish year run as a probationary member LOL

WELL...I'm feeling kind of stupid...yet, MY TACH WORKS!
Completely crazy! At the time, I had no idea the ECUs were incompatible! The car basically ran, but the tach was broke, AND pins 6 &14 weren't swapped. That would explain poor idle. And another epiphany, I swapped out my 90 ISC with a 91 because I determined (don't remember how yet) it was bad. This required a swap of the motors polarity wires. But since I had the 91 ECU in there, they were wrong for that ECU afterward. Now that I have the 89/90 style ECU reinstalled, it should be good. Well I guess I can call this resolved, mostly because the DSM Chips posts fired an old synapse! I wasted literally days and days chasing this down! Hard lesson learned. And I learned tons of useless unfruitful junk! But I had so many plans and determination to resolve it...[sigh)

I know you listed a lot of things you tried throughout this thread. Can you summarize what has actually resolved your issue?

Sounds like going back to the ‘90 ECU was the key?

Yes, the incompatible 91 ECU was the cause. Since I'm "invested", next week I'll try to get in touch with Jeff to see if he'll publish his schematic for us. Then I'll try to build one, and test with my 91 ECU. Also want to see if bypassing the little filter box works on the all-1990 cars. Somebody said that worked for them. I think the problems people were having with the tach in their 1990 DSMs, was that the filter box was missing or disconnected. People cleaning up their engine bays, JDM and USDM swaps, etc., possibly resulted in it disappearing.
 
Been about 5 months and haven't heard anything back from the note I dropped on his website. Maybe someone here has an alternate way to contact him? :cool:
