Will a stock turbo exhaust manifold work with a bigger turbo?

I have a 96 Eclipse GST all stock except a bigger sway bar and lowering springs. I bought a new hx35 but I won’t be installing it for awhile, was just making a list of parts I need to buy.

The stock 2G exhaust manifold is well suited for a s16g. It's generally the recommended upgrade, aside from the Evo3 manifold, for those with a 1G. It flows better up top and its improved content resists cracking better than its predecessor. Check yours throughly inside and out for cracks, though. Age rears its ugly head in more places than our own bodies.

Would I be able to mount an hx35w to a the stock manifold or is it necessary to upgrade? I’m on a lower budget build and will be for awhile.

Depends on the hot side.
But until you have the car built to support that level you'll probably be more disappointed with its performance than anything. If you're on a lower budget, that was not a great HP turbo target to buy into this early.. unless it was for a stupidly good price.

The hot side? Forgive me for all the questions I’m very new and trying to learn as much as I can on these forums since I don’t know anyone who personally works on these cars.

The part that bolts to your exhaust manifold and attaches to the turbo's CHRA (the middle bit that holds most of the important stuff) and rest of the exhaust bits.
If you went to a Cummins shop and bought it off the shelf, no, it will not bolt up.

Putting down HX35W power on a GST is going to be a challenge as well and not a cheap one. I'd stick with the 16g. You'll likely still have traction issues in 1st, 2nd, and maybe 3rd depending, but it's quick spooling and an instant smile maker.

Wouldn’t it bolt up to the exhaust where the stock turbo sits currently? Or do I need to move it?

There are lots of different bolt patterns. Did you buy something that has a dsm bolt pattern? If not then no it will not bolt up to a stock manifold. Show us what you bought.

No. That will not bolt up. It's also rather large if you have modest goals. It won't be fun to drive in my opinion. Not on an open diff FWD.
Ok sounds good, I’ll just resell it no problem. I don’t need a huge turbo, but I want some decent boost that is still fun and reliable to drive.

You can bolt a larger turbo on the stock exhaust manifold with adaptor.
Beside the flange type and flow, the common problem is often you can't just mount a large turbo due to the interference with the block and/or the water pipe due to the manifold flange angle. You would need a spacer between the head and exhaust manifold with longer exhaust manifold studs to locate the turbo farther from the engine or/and an angled adaptor to change the Mitsubishi flange to the turbine housing flange you have. Or dent the water pipe, I don't prefer though.

If you want a fun car for the street, stick with the 16g class or maybe a touch above. They're the best bang for the buck.
What's the state of your motor?

He would need a Bullseye Perfomance hotside for a Holset HX35 and I don't think they make them anymore. It would be laggy unless bolted up to a twin scroll exhaust manifold. A 16g, up to a 20g, is what I would be doing for those goals.

The 16g, any variant, is enough to get you into trouble. Even something that small will find weak spots in the drivetrain

Nevertheless, damn, its such a surprising and shockingly fun turbo. If going back to standard cams doesn't improve my htav3's characteristics, I might just have to put my old b16g back on
