Well this is horrible. Less than 50 miles on a fresh rebuild from DTR. Lost OD Sunday on a half mile drive, yes DRIVE not boosted romp. Just about to call this shit quits. Getting too old to fk with this stuff.
That is a SNAPPED output shaft. I was logging when this happened so I know it wasn't under load, or much, it was just a drive.
I rebuilt an extra OD unit and was just going to swap them out......then I pulled the cover. FML

Oh Pat, for an older guy like me, probably a whole week of work after work and my body will hurt for another 2 weeks after that and multiple trips to a chiropractor at $50/visit. It's hard on ME, but if I were younger, it would be out in a day. I have had my share of pretty bad luck, but for some reason I still feel blessed. (Because I still have first, second and third, I guess )
If you feel like it, here is the running log of the short little drive. I am glad I was logging. I am also glad the fuel issue is resolved pretty much, but we are back to square one just like last year and if the fuel sits in there long, I will be doing a tank cleaning again. I will just try to drive the fuel out of it, but it has 10 gallons of fresh E60 something in it. Oh well.

You might be able to delay by quite a bit how long it takes to form goo, gel, or whatever it is, by adding some K-100 to your tank. I can't swear to it that it will work, but I've been using it since 2019 and it doesn't seem to hurt anything. I'm pretty sure it won't dissolve goo that's already formed but it might help prevent new goo! Fair warning though - I haven't looked inside my fuel tank for a long time. I only see the inside of my 6 gallon plastic storage tanks (outboard motor gas tanks) and they always look fine, plus they have their own "sock" at the bottom of their pickup tube.
I suppose now that I've said this I'll have a clogged sock somewhere.

Oh I can drive 10 gallons out OR, Luckily I have that 10an bulkhead fitting and a 6an adaptor and 10' of 6an line. I can pump it out pretty dam quick. The tune really needs reworked so maybe just a half mile down the road and back at a time, until its time to take it out, refining its tune.

I hear you ..the joys of getting older...we have to slow down our pace .. but we can still get it done ...was in a bar with an older buddy of mine and another (much younger) friend of mine see's him chatting with this young hottie ...so my younger friend says "Jack ...at ur age what you gonna be able to do if she goes home with you ?" My buddy replies " You might have a point there...I guess what you could do in 10 minutes might take me all nite to do "

I don't understand how an output shaft fails on a drive. If it's a fresh rebuild, could you tell the place that built it. You could reach out to IPT and see what they think. These cars a one issue after another. Hope you are able to continue the game brother.

I agree on one issue after another with these cars . I think this is another “very unfortunate” example of damned if you do or don’t in the drive train department, automatic doesn’t mean issue free, and I’m still waiting on someone else to respond with a similar issue of e85 “gelling up”, I know diesel fuel can do that in extreme cold, but I’ve never heard of ethanol doing it? I’ve heard of it’s corrosive properties on aluminum or freeing up gunk inside a tank? I don’t know, I’ve had e85 sit in my tank for a while now on a couple occasions, most recently my 2 year build and didn’t have that issue knock on wood , I’m just venting because I genuinely feel shitty for you Marty. These cars can be fantastically Great and Awful at the same time, I just hate seeing a fellow dsm’er who actually cares and has the passion going thru so many issues one after another, I hope your boosting again soon brother

There's one that was posted in Evom in 2015. The guy was using E98 and/or E85. He said it gelled his fuel filter, and it rusted the pintle in his Kinsler fuel pressure regulator. I'm pretty sure he had bought a 55 gallon drum of E98 in 2012. He had the problem in 2015, probably still using the same fuel.

In the same thread back in post #807 is where he says he's going to buy a drum of E98. (In 2012)

I thought maybe this problem would be jumping out from all over with a google search, but not really. So maybe long term storage in a large steel drum is part of the recipe for it.

I use PLASTIC 55 gallon containers. It IS where all my fuel was coming from but now I have it at the pump, just a drive away. I am REPURPOSING all of the remainder of that drum, maybe 15-20 gallons left. Should make good weed killer and fire accelerant.
Now MAYBE, it has something to do with that fact but IDK yet. Every weekend has been a downer so I am just taking in LIFE this weekend and finding FUN THINGS to do so I can smile. I have another shaft coming for the trans. My oldest son got one from Dacowgod. Tim has told me it takes a complete teardown so IDK what I'm gonna do, but I drove it with 3 gears just to make sure it still moved. I will probably hire the removal and reinstall and see if a local transmission shop can do the work (I really don't trust anyone but me and the members on here).
Its a plan. I have some "other" DSMs coming out of know where at me all of a sudden. A 90 Talon and another 92. I will look at them and see if I can save another while I get what I have going again. Its alot for an old dude but I can afford to hire help, while I go to WORK every day. We will see. I sure appreciate all the support here or I'd have thrown my hands up and cashed out.

I do have a spare, untested transmission but my trans guy called and offered to guide me thru replacing the mainshaft. Of course he does it everyday so it sounded not too bad since it is all brand new and was shifting wonderful and firm. I have to get the trans out first and with Mothers Day (Y'all don't forget your mothers!), I don't see me working on the car until I can get it out and not have any projects that need the lift for a week (for me maybe more than that, but it is what it is).
I'm happy we got to talk about the issue. I really need a converter if it comes back out.

Marty, your pics of the fuel pump sock in post #342 - I'm kind of assuming those pics are after you cleaned the sock and it is just kind of wet from cleaning and has a little bit of dark stain on it that won't come off. Do you have a pic of it when it was still all goobered up with gel? Was the gel something you'd even see in a photo? Is it more like you have to feel it with your fingers to know it's there? I took my "old" sock out (6 years) and replaced with a new one, and I'm not noticing much wrong with the old one except it has more of that dark stain than what you show in post #342. It didn't seem to be particularly collapsed. I guess I'm not sure how obvious it would be if the sock was in the early stages of clogging up, before the car starts to run bad.

Well we had an "All Wheels Night" tonight and I thought the crowd had seen the old Camaro enough so I took the "3 Speed" DSM Auto car to town. It was the only "tuner" car there for most of the night but I am sure glad John brought his Honda out too!. I threw a different tune Into the Talon because she was crapping out under load/boost. It did drive better after a few adjustments but the WOT SUCKED. I looked down at the FP gauge and guess what it was doing under WOT???
That's right, the same shit I fought a year ago, fuel pressure was dropping under boost so you KNOW I KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, jelled E85 from sitting....again, sucking the FP sock closed. Good news is, I know how to fix that in about 4 hours tank out and back in. Jeez, just another issue. Ugggg
Glad I can shed some light on issues like "cutout under boost".

Hey Marty! Love the pics, but holy heck I gotta ask what are they putting in your ethanol , I’ve Knock On Wood YET to have ANY issues running ethanol. I run fic 2150’s which don’t have stainless internals, for $h!ts and gigs I add Lucas ethanol stabilizer but who knows how much that helps. My car sat however for 2 years with over half a tank of pump e70, my injectors were fresh on first start last year, but still, 2 year old ethanol..no issue

Sorry one last post for fun! If you mix 2.5 gallons of e98 with 2.5 gallons of pump e70 you get EXACTLY e85

Man I sure hope I can get Jeremy’s luck on the e85 thing. I’m slowly working on mine converting it run ethanol. My car does sit for months at a time occasionally. I spoke with an other member on here and they mentioned about filling up with some pump gas if your expecting to let it sit.

But man 2 years that sounds awesome. I’m trying to receive all the benefits of ethanol without any of my worst feared con. The ethanol jelling up after sitting. I’ve tried to do it as “correctly” as I can though with all ptfe and stainless components or e85 “safe”.

Marty, even after the issues you’ve documented on tuners, do you regret the ethanol? Or the benefits of it are just too good to give up?
