Alright guys, well I just finished my 14B install in my 95 GSX. All is well besides some minor oil leaks on the return line and the SS feed line at the filter housing. There was also a VERY minor coolant leak from the front banjo bolt on the turbo. I tightened it a tad and I think i went away. Now the turbo is spooling really late because I think there may be a leak before the turbo.
Now on to the problems.

1. The turbo does not smoke at all besides at WOT sometimes it blows out whiteish grey smoke. I'm trying to think of where it could be burning coolant. It never did this before the turbo install.

2. There was some white smoke the past 2 days at the manifold. I'm thinking its the shitload of PB Blaster that I sprayed all over the car but I'm not sure.

3. There's a smell coming from my engine that I can smell if I pop my hood and it becomes more noticeable when I'm driving and really get on it. It smells like burning plastic sort of, with a mix of burning rubber. The lower heat shield is not on the car because it's a pain to get on and I haven't put it back on because I haven't had time. Nothing is touching anything hot so I 'm confused...The only possible thing is maybe I pout on a new 4 ply exhaust mani. gasket as well as antiseize on most of the bolts and the turbo-mani. bolts.

Any help? Thanks.

Nope no oil looks fine its not mixing with coolant

I did also notice the white smoke is as well coming thru the dipstick tube. I changed the pcv valve cause someone had told me that if it was sucking up oil it would cause the smoke, of course that wasnt the solution

Have you compression tested your car yet? Also, do a leak down test and see where the leak is coming from.

I have researched this topic for the last 3 days and still cant come to a conclusion on what the issue is.

I have a 97 talon with a 6 bolt swap, built top end and bottom end. car started to smoke last year occationally and then turned into a constant thing, soooo i did a compression test and it turned out bad, i assumed that my piston rings were bad. Bought a new built block this winter put it in and used the same head but a new mls gasket and followed the torque pattern. Started it up last week and its still doing the same thing, smokes continually, not as bad under boost or maybe i just cant see it as well. Guessing its either valve seals or turbo seals... but have no clue. but i dont want to send my turbo out to be rebuilt if its the valve seals.

This may come as a shock to you....but we don't know either.

No cat 3in dp into 3in thermal exhaust with a resonator

Just an update... found oil in my intake before the turbo... maybe its blow in out of the valve cover. I think I'll try a breather. What do you think?

Tried the breather.. still no change. The car doesn't smoke on a cold start for about the first 30 secs ..then it starts to roll.

Just an update, found my problem. Valve seals are bad. I had oil all over the top of all my pistons when I put the scope in there to see. Suprisingly the spark plugs were not covered in oil.

I've done some searching, but haven't found anything related to my issue. I'm sure it could be there somewhere, purhaps I missed it. Anyway, I'm smoking white from the exhaust. Not a lot, but enough for me to be conscious of it. It'll smoke a little upon start-up when cold, and here and there accelerating from a stop. No other time will produce smoke. I've checked coolant levels and its always at the right level. No leaks anywhere. The radiator hoses do stay kinda hard after shut-off though, even when the engine is fully cold. I know they shouldn't be that hard when cold. I do have a sporadic idle when stopped as well, if that makes any difference. Not sure what all to check since I've checked everything and the system is properly burped. Head and block are decked from the rebuild and has a new oem head gasket. Compression was low when I tested, but forgot to wire the throttle open so numbers could be off.

As stated in my original post, I'm not loosing coolant, at all. It has a new head gasket with under 1000 miles on it. It runs at normal temp, doesn't get hotter. (And I do know what each color means, which is why I'm asking about coolant system).

Thanks for the links iugrad, but I already read through those and they were not of any help.

Are you using synthetic oil? When oil was dumping to the hot side of my turbo, and burning out the exhaust it was puffing white smoke. Pull off your piping and see if there is any blow by.

At the moment, I just have conventional oil. I'll check for blow by after I'm out of school tonight. You talking about the exhaust piping right? I.e. unbolt the o2 housing to check for blow by? Also this turbo only has just over 500 miles since being rebuilt by Justin. Don't think it should be going bad.

What turbo is it? Just making sure you have the proper restrictor if applicable. If it's a fresh rebuild from Justin then highly doubt the turbo is bad, and if something was off I am sure he would have told you (he rebuilt a turbo for me as well...top notch guy btw). By piping I mean the turbo inlet pipe and hot side. Also verify PCV/crank case. When the head was rebuilt were the valve seals replaced? Just throwing out other ideas since you seem to be sure its not coolant related.

Also, burning coolant would smell sweet like maple syrup.

Its a Big T28, and Justin did an awesome job rebuilding it (already recommended him to others). I'm sure the PVC could use a replacement, but haven't done it yet. The valve seals are new with now just under 1000 miles. I know there is some blow by oil in the intake tube since I haven't bought a catch can. There's also no sweet smell, I smell for it, but nothing. Would a rich fuel mix cause this sort of thing because I have bad fuel mileage too. Like 150 miles to a tank in town when I know it should be around 250 or more.

If you romp on it (go WOT) and see a bowl of smoke could be :) do you have wideband to see what your AFR's are like? Also, is your mod list in your profile accurate?

I would pursue the catch can route and see if It clears up.

So no fuel upgrades whatsoever? Only things I could think of fuel economy wise is plugs/wires, and possible bad o2 sensor(s) unless you have an upgraded exhaust with no cat. Boost leak could also make you run rich. The MAF compensating and dumping fuel due to unmetered air.

Sorry bout that, i was skimming your original post. im still learning around the DSM. Not a noob to an engine, still learning thou.
