I just picked up a 1993 TSI with a 16g in it, and it smokes from the exahust mostly when im under boost. I searched couldent find a stright answer but i was thinking the valve seals are gone? The motor was rebuilt and has about 30k on it it dose have some head work done stock fuel system.

Any help would be great.

Let me know what you think!

yes i did change the oil and it still smokes. Ill check the oil line from the turbo to the oil pan today.

Im in the same boat. I thought it was the turbo so I swapped the 14 b to 16 g (pita)

and it still smokes a bit, The previos owner had the oil filter spin off a couple of times and has oil sprayed under the car. I am also using royal purple and Im going to change oil to regular oil 10w-30 and see if that helps.

General oil smoke "rule of thumb" for our cars-

-Smoke under boost, none at idle or while highway driving = Turbine Seal.

-Smoke while idling, clears up while driving or under boost = Valve Seals.

-Smoke while idling, driving, under boost; remains constant = Worn piston rings / cylinders.

^ I concur. Some mechanics can do valve seals without ever pulling the head. It all depends on what your looking to do at this point because now might not be a bad time to check your valves and get new valve seats cut in.

So i checked my intercooler piping and found no oil, so im leaning towards worn valve seals. Thanks for helping me narrow it down tho.

This site rocks!

Yeah valve seals ftw. :thumb: They are cheap and if you keep compressed air in the cylinder you don't have to pull your head. Play around with it a bit you only want enough compressed air blown in your spark plug holes to keep the valve up.
