Wastegate recommendations?

Well once again(4th time now) my wastegate springs are shot in my TiAL 38mm mvs. Once again in less than 500 miles. So I have now had around 2000 miles on this gate and 4 time the springs were cooked and collapsed and 1 time the diaphragm was also blown apart. I havnt taken it off the car yet to inspect it, but I do know I am most likely done with TiAL gates...well at least this one anyways. There has to be a fault in the gate itself causing springs to get heated up and cook. 38mm too small for set up? Running turbonetics T04E 57 trim @25PSI. I need suggestions on a good gate. I currently have a punishment O2 housing that I bought with the gate so if i can re use I will if not i will buy new and sell that one.

That is very strange. I run an ebay knockoff of the Tial MVS, and have had it for over 30k daily driven miles on the original springs. Still going to this day. I am sad to hear this is your fourth failure with an authentic TIAL waste gate. Perhaps go with a newer model? What does TIAL say about it?

Uh-oh...I just bought a new Tial MV-R and for some reason, even though I have a 20psi spring setup, the wastegate is cracked open even at idle. hmmm...English Racing here I come...

They want me to send it to them again. So this would be the 2nd time I would be sending it to them @ $45 3day shipping to them x2, $80 for repair x2, then $30 to ship back again x2....I could have bought a new gate for what it will cost and that doesnt even gaurantee it wont happen again. Even Jake at TiAL said i am the only person this has ever happened to, especially 4 times, wich really points the finger at the gate itself being faulty in some way. I by no means drive my car hard, it doesnt see WOT too often and there is virtually under 500 miles on it each time before it fails. People run alot more agressive set up than what I am. Its like my gate cant handle any kind of heat. I might scrap the o2 set up alltogether and opt for a manifold flanged for a gate just for easy access and not have to pull the mani and turbo everytime this thing fails If I can locate some stock water lines I might just throw the 16G back on.

My next choice after Tial would be Turbosmart. Turbosmart's Comp-Gate 40 should share the exact same footprint as the Tial MVS.


I'm personally on the fence right now about switching from Tial to Turbosmart. I've only ever used Tial and I've been very happy with their products. But I feel like changing it up and Turbosmart is cheaper. As long as the quality is there (which is seems to be), then I don't see any reason not to change.

So Paul, the turbo smart is the same height as the MVS 38mm? Height is critical with my PR o2 housing as the TiAL already hits my alternator and its a compact gate. Plus I had to bash my stock fan in a bit to fit anything bigger in height will be a problem. Thanks for the info too

Took the cap off the gate today, springs were cooked so badly that one of them actually broke apart, major scoring on the cap and inside the gate, part of the broken spring is actually welded to the inside of the cap, diaphragm is blown apart also.

They are actually charging you money to repair their defective part? I would request that they send you a new one to replace the damaged one and see if you still have the issue.

First 2 times was just shot springs so I fixed it myself, next time was shot springs and diaphragm and cost me $160 by the time I recieved it back from TiAL (remember that i live in Canada) now they want me to send it back again so another $160. They say it takes 5000* to cook the springs like mine are, theres no way that kind of heat is coming out my motor, if it was I'm pretty sure my motor would be melted by now. Hell even the plastic zip ties holding the vacuum line on the gate arnt melter and they arnt even high temp ones there is definately something wrong with inside the gate that is acting like a melting pot. I might scrap the PR o2 housing and go for a Manifold with gate flange (possibly the punishment GT35R kit) but cant find too many people who have input on it.

Ask them how it is possible for your engine to reach those temp's and not melt the aluminum and iron that the engine is made from. Obviously there is a problem with their product. There is no reason that you should have to pay 160 dollars to have it mess up again. I would demand a new one in place of yours or your money back for it.

I have a second hand EMUSA WG. IDK what its bolt pattern is but its a 38mm. I think its an ebay type WG. I got it free with o2 housing and turbo purchase. It can hold down to factory psi (like 10-11 ish) Its very consistent, its on my daily driver, and was on another daily driver when i bought it. I was hesitant about actually using it but a little research led me to believe it might just hold up. I think they are like 40-70 ish on ebay, I never looked into prices.

I know its a knockoff brand, Im not promoting it at all, but for free it works great for me. And you can tell Tial that their POS is costing you the better part of a grand when a knock off would probably last just as long (as yours has, not all tials...) for less than 10% of your financial commitment to them.

Is your Tial w.g vented to atmosphere?
Perhaps its not venting correctly and/or too much backpressure cooking the diaphragm?

Anybody have input on the gt35R kit from punishment? I'm gunna try running the gate dumped and off the mani and see if its any different, so the cost of a new housing, gate, manifold, gaskets, hardware, I might as well get a gt35r thrown in as well

Ive got a couple emusa 38mm's. One new in box. They accidentally sent me an extra years ago when i was trying a 420aT project. Ive heard pretty good things about them. The piece LOOKS good and the one i used held 10lbs just fine. Maybe its worth a shot? Theyre cheap as hell. If i go external ever im going to use one.

If your on a bolt on housing, put an internal back in it, and never look back.

I cooked my EMUSA twice when I had it on my car. Eventually separated the actuator from the valve and it was good for a while, but I felt it would still #### up.

Wow...that sucks. I've been beating the crap out of a knock-off 38mm for 2 years with no issues, that I gave $70 shipped new. I believe it was bought from Boombop Racing or something like that.

No way in hell would I pay for the shipping and back and forth stuff; there is obviously something wrong with that gate, and Tial should cover it 100%.

Bullshit. Most carbon and stainless steel alloys melt at just above half of that, with the more exotic stuff being somewhat higher. Granted, it's getting hot in the WG to cause the damage you are seeing, but not 5000*F. The diaphragm would be dust and the aluminum parts would be a dripping pile of hot goo LONG before 5000*F.

Are you running antilag or something that is putting a bunch of heat into the exhaust?

No anti lag, and ya I even said to tial my motor would be toasted let alone the gate at 5000* I would set the housing up for internal gate ( it was originally but I removed the flapper and plug the arm hole) but I have since bought the punishment GT3582R kit with manifold mounted gate, so here's hoping I like this setup

Get a turbosmart compgate40. I have never heard of an issue with them, ran one myself, and never had an issue. The new ones are awesome, easy to spring swap, compact, and very well priced. I shyed away from Tial as I was recommended to turbosmart, and will continue to use their products!

I have PTE wg. It was a good deal. But I think I should of went to tial. Thats what most people run but theres been a bunch of threads of them going bad. So maybe turbosmart wont be a bad idea.

This time I was and got the same mileage as every other time before it failed. I work in northern alberta so I'm only for 2 weeks out of the month and in those 2 weeks it gets driven maybe 2 hrs total a day. At least with the 35r kit (which comes with the TiAL 44mm mvr which I'm a little worried about now ) I won't have to pull the turbo and everything else if the gate effs up.

Update: The TiAL is now an authentic paperweight, ordered the gt35R kit from punishment, but upgraded to PTE billet 6235R instead, and instead of the 44mm tial gate that comes with it I switched it out for a PTE 46mm vband gate. Tim was excellent in answering all my questions as usual and helpfull in my decision making. So looks as tho I will sell my punishment O2 housing with vband flange, and my turbonetics 57 trim shortly. Thanx to those who had input-Gary

My friend has been running "emusa" 38mm. He's had over 15k miles with no issues.
