Turbo Oil Pressure

Quick question.
How do I check my oil pressure at my turbo?

Im not sure of an actual tool to measure it..best way i use is if its too much "it will smoke", if its not enough "you will already know because the turbo will be junk" LOL.

Its not very precise, but if youre worried about too much OP and its not smoking, you shouldnt worry at all. :thumb:

Well that's a stupid way, there has to be a better way to monitor it. Maybe like a T or Y fitting? Idk.
 
You answered your own question. Try doing a "T" fitting on your turbo, not sure of the sizes though for each end you will have to use.
Another thing to remember is space issues. Not sure if you will have space to run the t there with a 90 degree fitting, but i guess it's worth a shot.

Way ahead of you brotha, and this was about a year ago I thought of this idea, I just never implemented it. Either way you have a free flowing fitting at the turbo feed. Then you have the gauge infront of the inline filter with different orrifice sized for restriction. From there you can change out what you need based on pressure seen on the gauge.

Holy crap load of parts?! Why is a filter needed if its coming from the OFH? The oil that is coming from there is pretty clean.
Did this come in a 'kit' or did you put it together? Also, what turbo were you going to run this with and how much do you want for it?

LOL... yeah, me likeee lots of little parts and pieces... LOL Actually, from the oil filter housing it's unfiltered... if i'm not mistaken, and what could it hurt if not benefit more... right? I put this thing together on my own, a good way to measure pressure with journal bearing turbos. I was putting this onto a BW S258 ET but i'm selling that to. But it's still brand spanking new... :thumb:

yeah but if theres no smoking theres usually no concern for too much OP.

Then again i spend more time being anal about other things, so im not really at liberty to say! haha

I havent seen anything like this before, and it looks pretty neat. Something id never end up using most likely though. What makes you worry out of curiosity? Having oil blow by problems?

Improper oil pressure will murder your turbo faster than anything- especially if the drain oriface is too small, much like most of the -10AN kits sold by vendors such as yourself today.

Every turbo manufacturer tells you to source the oil supply to the filter housing with a -4AN line, which blasts oil into the turbo like a firehose at wide-open throttle. You can't tell me a -10AN drain (which is smaller than the factory drain for a turbo which was fed from the head) can handle this volume of oil to drain properly.


While most turbo manufacturers have no idea what the proper oil pressure requirements are for their turbochargers, Holset clearly outlines in their service manual that pressure should never exceed 72psi under full load. They apparently know what they're taking about as they have their turbos on trucks with over a million miles on them without being rebuilt, replaced, or serviced.

The O.P. just wants to ensure his turbo is getting proper operating oil pressure to last a long life....not playing the "wait until it smokes then install a restrictor" game.

Exactly!!!! I have a restrictor now, but I still want to make sure that it will suffice oiling my turbo properly. Everything is out of my car now for winter and by summer I want it to be ready. So, do you think my restrictor is enough or should I monitor it threw something like KJ suggested? Or just run a Y or T off the turbo feed?

As you can see the evo3 oil filter housing does a nice job of filtering it once, than I will have it filter again for super clean oil going into the turbo. Nice idea, ehh :sneaky: LOL Anyways, hope you find a setup... if not mine.

honestly the safest way and best way to run oil to your turbo on a second gen is to use the 1g oil supply line from the head:thumb: i ran the kit from the OH and its good if you got the pressure fitting and if you run a filter it will decrease the flow.

if you search you will find multiple threads about it.

if what your worried about monitoring OP then get a gauge to monitor but besides that if your oil is filled correctly your op remains constant in response to your revs.

Right, but my problem isnt monitoring my OP at the housing. I want to monitor it at the turbo. I am (currently) not feeding from the head, but from the OFH. I know people running .60 restrictors and they are fine, but my restrictoris a .75 so I just wanted to make sure that the oil pressure was good.

Damn bro, sorry I missed it :D. Umm, yes and no. I'm actually looking for an adjustable valve where I can change how much pressure comes out with a twist of the knob. But the kit i'm selling for 135 on my ad, but I'll get you down for 120 shipped to your door my brotha, for having a like mind !
