Tips for building bumper, side exit exhaust?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

If the O2 bungs weren't already welded on, that'd be a no brainer. But, since the wastegate pipe is there, if I shortened that area, the O2 sensor would hit it. So that's not possible.

I took off the exhaust (luckily it only takes about a minute to get it off) and marked 2 lines that measure an inch apart so I know where to cut it tomorrow, and a straight line so that I can line up the tip and again and make sure it's at a proper angle.

This mesh stuff inside is what I'm worried about screwing up. Pray that I don't jack it up too bad if I do this....sigh.....

Wow, barely saw this thread despite how old it is.
I would love doing one, but the fact that I live in 1940's Germany....aka California...it would be minutes before I have all of LAPD behind me.

Great job!

I see a section where could take out without messing up the mesh...well, maybe. See where your weld is? To the right of that (in the picture) it looks like a good 3/4-1" space there. Maybe cut out around the weld and then weld it back together except with that small chunk taken out.

Looks great though besides that!

Well, I've been thinking. The "muffler" part really doesn't quiet it down THAT much....if any. If I cut it and it looks like the mesh is gonna get messed up, I'll probably just rip it all out while it's cut apart, then just weld the shell piece of it back together. Only solution I can think of.

If you look at the last picture I posted, the inside section that holds the mesh....well, it does that on the other side too. So if I cut that, I can't weld it back in.

Well, I'll probably be taking the guts out of it anyway....but not because I want to.

Yep, the guts had to come out. Oh well. I'd fire it up but have some other issues going on with a belt that came off and broke some stuff. Guess when I can save up $100, I'll get it running again. Anyway, just waiting for someone to say it's not long enough now. Lol. If you're THAT guy, well, screw you!!! Haha! Anyway, here ya go. Hope everyone's happy now.

I hate side exhaust and think they are for lazy people but I will admit, after you fixed it that does indeed look good. Great job.. Still the "easy way out" but good job none the less with some top notch fabrication.

Whatcha mean "the easy way out" and for lazy people? I don't get whatcha mean. But anywho....thanks for the compliments guys. I'll post up more vids when I fix a few broken parts this week.

Looks much better!

Some people that live outside of Kalifornia don't need or want a full exhaust system and the associated weight and cost. But I guess smart planning is lazy...

Wait right here...

*Calls Shep to explain how lazy he is for not running 12 feet of pipe under his Talon*

LOL

Lol, I'm not gonna get all pissy over the comment but I AM curious what he means by it. I just wanted to do it for lack of back of back pressure (more power), less weight, and figure it's more original as well. I sure have a lot of people saying, "wow, I've never seen anything like that before", here around town.

The way it looks now is exactly what I saw in my head when I started this thread. But when it came out a little longer than planned, I was kind of afraid to modify it to get it how I wanted it cause I didn't wanna screw it all up. BUUUUT, I did it right. Shew! Big sigh of relief.

Oh how i'd love to do fabricating on cars for a career. Maybe someday.

Well, it's loud, but much better than an open downpipe where it ends right up under your butt and the sound resonates all through the car cause the sound waves are bouncing off the ground and the bottom of the car. I'll take this over an open downpipe ANY day of the week.

Perfect! Exactly how I had pictured it too!

If you want to get into fab look into getting a BS in mechanical engineering with an automotive specialty. You'll be doing what you enjoy and getting paid well, can't complain about that.

:dsm:

You still live in PCB? Tyndall I suppose being military, if so I would love to cruise down there and check it out, I have yet to meet a fellow DSM'r, you plan going to Spring Fling?

I'm in the middle of Panama City. Not sure if I'll go to Spring Fling or not. All depends on my school or work schedule. And sure, hangin out with fellow dsm'ers is always nice.....except for the few douche bags I've met along the way. Lol. But yeah, PM me or something when ya plan to come down.

Took these today at work. Had one of the guys rev it to the launch limit. High idle though but thinking my throttle body is sticking after the seals I replaced in it. And still have a huge boost leak in that area I need to find. But anyway, just trying to give ya'll a better idea of the sound, although it's obviously way louder in person. Lol. Enjoy.

2 step at 6k.....ecmlink.

Once I get the driveshaft in to finish my awd conversion (hopefully next Friday), I'll try and take more vids. Wanna have a buddy film from another car while I'm driving and fun stuff like that.

Looks good man. May want to be careful though, with that turbo and no muffler, cat or resonator, a regular straight pipe exhaust would pop flames out, so Im sure you will. Just make sure you are aware of your surroundings. Anyway great fab skills. And if you were in South Texas I would pay you to build one for me. You did a way better job than I could have on my first exhaust.

I guess people need to watch where they stand then. Lol. But I don't use anti-lag at all.

Anyway, found out last week that my tig welder was messed up. I had a really hard time trying to weld this thing up without getting it too hot and guess that explains why. I'm on a good machine now and it's sooooo easy now compared to what I was on. Wish I had known cause I could've made this look much nicer. Oh well......next time.

And thanks for all the compliments guys.
