Tips for building bumper, side exit exhaust?

Okay, my engine and transmission is out. I tore the transmission apart and the center diff is busted so I'm gonna have it welded up. My Quarter Master clutch still looks great so breathing a sigh of relief. My valve cover gasket is leaking oil EVERYWHERE!!!! So it looks like a mess right now but gonna clean it up and find another cover somewhere to use. In the meantime, I'm getting the exhaust work done. I'm cutting the pipes how I want, and then taking it over to the welding shop here at school to have them weld it all up. I can't say this is gonna be done really fast because I'm working on a lot right now and money is holding me up. New timing belt, water pump, timing belt, balance shaft delete, and finish my awd conversion (I'll just have to wait on the money for the driveshaft I'm getting). Anyway, here's what I have right now. Posting from my phone so if it doesn't show up, I'll. Fix it later.

That looks pretty awesome! Are you going to try to use that muffler now? You should have enough room from the frame rail to the bumper to squeeze it in there. I will be looking forward to how it turns out.

Well, at the end of that pipe, it starts to curve up some cause that was a u-bend pipe that I had cut. I'm gonna cut that part off and probably make it point down, and then out. But I doubt I'll have room for the muffler I really want/wanted. But I'll try and make it work and look as good as I possibly can.

Ya well if someone could make this work with a muffler it would be an awesome weight reduction for a street car. People go with titanium exhausts and see some good weight savings. Imagine how much more you'd save without any pipe at all. If you cut the extended slanted tip off the ATR muffler and put the oval body of it right up against the bumper it might just fit. Call it wishful thinking but you've peaked my interest in this set up LOL.

If you make it legit enough and cheap enough your should sell those o2 housings! I would sooo buy one.

Im a little late here but here is what i did . The first pic is of a o2 housing i built when i was running my 50 trim . Not anymore but thought i would show it anyways. built it all myself. this was a few years ago . I would build something a little better by now. or even build a Aluminum side exit . I build this muffler as well as the crazy little exhaust silencer. the muffller deff does help some for sure. Sorry about the crapy welds. I get in a rush when i do my own stuff because i want to get it done LOL.

Also i wouldnt go 4" it is un needed

My concern about using the atr muffler is mainly the weight. I've shortened it a considerable amount but it's still heavy compared to the rest of the piping. I'm more afraid that with all the bumps and hard launching that'll be soon to come, I may snap the exhaust piping or welds. I'm not ruling out using it, but it's a concern and would wanna figure out a way to brace it. As far as my piping, it's 2.5 and will expand to 3 inches at the very end. And will have a 4 inch tip from what it looks like but would prefer at least a 4.5 or 5 inch tip much more. I feel that 2.5 is a good size because the piping is short.

Another thing is that I've been running only my wideband sensor with ecmlink. I wanna go back to using a wideband AND a narrowband though. At least if one fails, I can use the other sensor.

What I would do is weld two exhaust hangers from the frame rail and attach them to the muffler with the rubber hangers that are used on a factory exhaust system. Basically it would mimic the way the muffler hangs in the stock position.

I'm stongly debating this. Anyway, here's a picture of the exhaust I had on it. The whole thing. This is what was on it when I took that video I posted earlier. I'm currently on hold because I'm trying to finish the awd conversion that's kicking my butt cause I'm trying to figure out how the gas tank is suppose to be hooked up. Ugghhh....

the gas tank bolt on totally different than the fwd.. I'll scan a pic for you later on within an hour or so, for you to use as a reference...

Shoot me a PM if you'd like a picture of the mounting locations for the AWD gas tank. I took over 800 photos when I did my AWD swap, theres a few in there that should help you...

:dsm:

Someone take a look at the awd conversion thread please. I posted my issues over there. Thanks.

Not done with this thing yet but didn't want anything thinking that I'm doing nothing on this thing. Have this much of it all welded up but I think the person who welded it had one day experience of welding. It looks horrible, but plenty of penetration at least. Still have more to do. I'll post as I get it done, but of course I'm doing a lot right now all at one time.

To make the hole smaller, you can have a heat shied cut for your bumper. I had one cut for my wastegate dump out my bumper, picture below.

Yeah, I was thinking of something like that. I'm really giving a lot of thought about using my modified ATR muffler though with a hanger. It's a 4 inch tip as well. Wondering if anyone can stretch it to 4.5 inches (locally) and then I'll have the tip cut for a slanted angle. Preferred method but we'll see.

My car is still down so sorry I haven't updated this. Looking to be around October'ish time frame to try and get all this done. Trying to find a new place to work on the car (storage unit I guess) and funds are just low right now. Those are the only 2 things that have been holding me up. Bills suck.

Anyway, doing some things like swapping over to a 1g head while I have it out. Been thinking about the exhaust tip problem so I've decided that I'm gonna use my atr (praying that it fits in there okay) and cut off the tip with the 4.5" outlet and weld onto the atr muffler. I'll update this when I can but don't hold your breath that this will be done quickly. Sigh....

Does anybody know if doing this would cause exhaust fumes to get inside the cabin. Like if your cruising with the windows down in the summer will you be choking on fumes? Also I read in another thread on bumper exit exhausts that someones paint got messed up from the exhaust fumes blowing down the side of the car while moving. I don't know how much truth there is to this though. People have their wastegate tubes coming out of their front bumpers. Maybe they can chime in on fumes.

Pics installed on the car? Underhood pics maybe?

I'm starting over on my exhaust because I decided to swap turbo's. Going with a Holset HX35 with a T3 turbine housing with the 3 inch vband outlet...like the one above. Hoping to have enough money this month to start putting it back together. Sigh, fingers crossed. Oh, and have the turbo already at least. Need a new manifold and wastegate though.

Well, I dunno about HX40, but that's what I'm gonna be doing with my HX35. At the 1st of the month I'll be getting an auto-tensioner and then I'll have all the parts needed to put my motor back together and be able to get my engine and tranny back in my car (if only I can find a place to work on it). That's when I'm gonna start working on the exhaust of course.

I'm waiting on a Pell check and if I could EVER get the freaking thing, I'd have all the money I need to finish everything. Was suppose to be in October. It's almost December now and still no check. Stupid government.

can we please get rid off this myth that back pressure is a good thing , it is 100% false . espicialy on turbo cars . The best exhaust is no exhaust . you want velocity or the exhaust gasses to exit the car as fast as possible so it can take in more air and make more power.
