Tips for building bumper, side exit exhaust?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

can we please get rid off this myth that back pressure is a good thing , it is 100% false . espicialy on turbo cars . The best exhaust is no exhaust . you want velocity or the exhaust gasses to exit the car as fast as possible so it can take in more air and make more power.

Would it be possible to install something that would suck the pressure enough after all the restrictions to have it seem open? Like some sort of fan with a higher cfm than what the engine exhaust is pulled out at?

Can't imaginee the fan would last very long with all the heat.

Anyway, my engine is back together. Just need a few gaskets here and there. Should have everything done sometime in Feb. Sorry my thread/build is taking FOREVER!!! But not throwing in the towel.

Small turbine?

I'm just talking shit though LOL I have no clue. Just asking if its possible.

I read somewhere that exhaust gases are still somewhat combustible. Is this true?

Getting there. I should be having it running this month. I'll post more when it's in and exhaust is done up....

And obviously, I've been doing a lot of changes over the year.

I know this has taken FOREVER to build. But next week sometime I should be done. Thought I'd post up a few pics but I've done even more since these. And fabricating so much crap that it's just taking time. Battery tray, lower radiator mounts, etc. etc. Doing more work on the exhaust tomorrow but it still won't be finished. Can't drive the car yet so having to take the parts to school, cut, tack it, come back home and test fit, take it off, back to school again, etc. etc. Sigh...

Anyway, here's a few.

And this is just a picture of the radiator mounts I made cause I went with a 1g radiator. Radiator is upside down of course. I WAS gonna cut the mounting tabs off and reweld them. But what if I welded them in the wrong spot? I'd have to do it over again. So instead, I made these. Can put the radiator down in the supports and just slide it around if need be, then bolt it in from the top. Plain and simple.

I'll try and post up more pics tomorrow if I get the time.

And sorry if my welds suck. Only been doing tig since last month.

Okay, more pics. Of course I decided to scrap the original idea of using the muffler I fabricated. Instead went with the muffler tip that I had bought from my work. Problem was that the tip had a 4 inch inlet and the piping is 3 inches. I had the same tip but smaller diameter, so what I did was cut off the reducer part of the smaller tip and welded it to the larger tip. That was it'd go from 3 inches to 4. It's all done except the tip isn't welded on yet. I need to tack it on but wanna make sure I have the right position. Then weld it up. Should hopefully be done with that part on Monday or Tuesday maybe.

And just a test fit, but the tip isn't welded on yet of course.

Annnnnd a short video. I'm not done with the car yet though. Had to make a biss screw adjustment just to get it to idle. Still have tuning to do....but you get the idea. This is part 2. Part 1, well, it just kept wanting to die so didn't wanna bother posting it.

The car sounds great, it sticks out a bit too much imo but cant knock the awesome work put into it.

Well, didn't want it sticking out too far, but also don't want exhaust all over the side of my car either. So figured that was about the best I could do as far as it sticking out without it being too much or too little.

Pretty sweet fabrication skills goin on there, but I do agree that it appears to be 1 1/2 to 2 inches too far out from what I usually see. Would it hurt to cut a little bit off the Vband side and reweld it? Either way props to you!

Have any pics you can post up of whatcha usually see? Just wondering. I was debating on shortening it about an inch but just dunno. It'd be a pain having exhaust all down the side of my car like I see all the time when people have it on the back of their bumpers cause it's too short, ya know?

This is what I was expecting to see. Your work is great, if you like how far it sticks out then leave it man.

Sticks out, but not too much. Yours isn't that far off from this pic.

Yeah, that looks decent. May bring it in tomorrow and cut it shorter. The exhaust is kinda close to the frame so been dating. Just don't wanna screw it up. Lol. 1st exhaust system I've ever built.

Well, I also don't wanna do anything to take away from the appearance either. I don't want people dissin on my car and wanna do things that are tasteful. So on my way home right now to take it off. Lol. Guess majority rules.

Well, I'm debating now. Only because of how difficult it'll be to change the length. It only sticks out 2 1/4 inches. I took some pics so people will understand what i'd have to deal with just to shorten it. It wouldn't be easy. I DO know what I could've done differently now though.....for next time I build one.

Cops here would be all over this. They're kinda hyper about low exhausts especially on a "tuner" car. If it was a Harley or a muscle car it wouldn't be a problem.
If I did it I think I'd have to angle it down at a 30 degree angle and exit under the from bumper in front of the drivers side tire instead of thru it. So the tip isn't visible. Also here you would get a big fine for no cat.

I actually thought about that too. But then I thougnt about this.....

Turbo blows, oil spews out, tire runs over oil, I wreck.

Next thought, install through bumper. Went with 2nd thought. Lol.

I think someone had asked why I put the bungs so close together. Here's why. NOOOO room.

Here's a shot of it from the top.

Now I was thinking of cutting it before the bungs and take out an inch but as you can see, the wastegate dump is there. If ya look to the right of the bungs, it curves right after that. So it'd mess up the angle. At the tip, it goes from 3 inches to 4 inches so can't cut there. Can't cut the tip itself cause it has the muffler crap and packing stuff all in there. So I'm stuck. Oh well. If it was any longer, i'd hate it. This is as extreme as I wanna go.

Why not remove a small section, say 1" from here?

Thanks. And no biggie. I WOULD like to maybe take about an inch off..... but just dunno where......yet.

Ah, now I see the picture. That's going from a 4.5 inch to 4 inch section. So if I cut there, I'm actually cutting the reducer part out.

Then angle cut it straight off the tip... :p

This is a muffler tip though. Look at the pic where you're looking into the pipe and you'll see what I mean.

I may just cut and shorten the muffler itself. Only thing I can think of. Probably do that tomorrow.
