If you really want to, run wastegate pressure, and then hit the button to run the system through your manual boost controller for a more regulated "HI" setting.

I'm running this on my E16G setup, mostly for testing. I used a Home Depot MBC and the original stock FPR solenoid, mounted behind the passenger headlight. I can switch from a slow spooling 10-12 psi WG pressure setting to a fast spooling 25 ish with a rocker switch next to the shifter. Works great. ;)

You can see it here, about 1/2 way down the page:

Sorry to hear this Phil, i think we were all looking forward to seeing you break your record again this year. Make sure you do find some time here and there to work on it so you don't loose all interest with it. Take care and don't be a stranger.

Thanks Trav! It's a tough reality in a way, but, it takes the pressure off me to have the car ready by a certain deadline or drag day. I don't need any added pressure or stress in my life, especially relative to a car that spends 362 days a year taking up space in my garage. Everything to do with the talon causes a bit of that. The time to work on it. The money to spend on it. The load I put on my shoulders every time I go out and run it....to get that next tenth. Ultimately, the above factors take the fun out of it for me in many ways. Basically, it's more work than fun most of the time. It used to be the opposite: I wanted to work on it in whatever capacity, to get that next tenth. I couldn't wait to race the next time. That's the long and short of it. I'm sure the car will make passes down the 1/4 again. I'd like to have some video of that as well, to remember, some solid mid-low 11's. Like I've said elsewhere, there are other factors at work here that I'd rather not make public, but, the above is what pertains to the car and racing itself. I'll be around, just not actively on my own end for a while.

Phil, Sorry to hear you can't make it... Maybe something will change so you can. Maybe surprise us one weekend and do a live feed? LOL What about renting out the car? I would glady drive that wolf in sheeps clothing any day of the week. LOL

Thanks! There is always the possibility of change. But, in order to move on from here, I needed to make a solid decision about it. What that means, is that it's not just about investing money here. If I won a million dollars in this weeks lottery, it would not put me at the dragstrip this year. There's so much more that goes into it than that.

Renting the car out....hmmmm....the last time someone else drove that car was in October of 1996, one of my best friends. You never know!

Damn Phil thats quick. I am very impressed, both at the 13.44 time with minimal mods and your most recent times!!! 14b power!!
Other than 3" ATR cat-back, and MBC with boost at only 15psi did you have any other suspension mods/ what kind of tires/ weight reduction at the time to run 13.44? I want to have a high 12 second street car using the 14b and with minimal weight reduction. If I follow all the Free mods, and buy a Intake pipe and K and N filter, 3 inch downpipe with 3 inch catback, MBC, boost guage, Walbro 255, and then turn boost up to 18 psi and drag radials, do you think I can reach my goal? I will already have installed a ACT 2100 clutch and fidanza lightweight flywheel. Thanks in advance!!

Thanks very much!

-the suspension was bone stock original
-the tires were the original Goodyear Eagle GT+4's
-the only weight reduction was that the spare, jack and tools were out, that's it!

You don't need an intake pipe.....just a K & N with a properly modded MAF and aircan.

The combo you have listed should run right into the 12's no problem as long as:

-engine is in best running order it can be- compression, fresh plugs, wires, etc.
-driver skill maximized for your set up.

You have enough modification to run 12 second slips. Don't spend any more on mods.....spend it all at the strip running down the 1/4 mile. And, even with MIMIMAL weight reduction you SHOULD see 12.XX on a timeslip in 2010.

Just a reference point, I was able to run 1.70 60' times on the stock wheels and tires.......and stock clutch.......so if you can get into the 1.7X 60' time arena, that would be optimal and help your chances for 12's, a pretty quick and solid 1-2 shift is key as well, that is where the most momentum is lost throughout the pass, especially if you are on stock suspension and the car looks to the sky in 1st gear on the launch.

Good luck! I'm sure you'll meet your goal:thumb:

Sorry to hear that Phil! You know we all were looking forward to seeing you better your times again this year. But I respect your decision in that I know you're doing whats best for you and your family. We'll be expecting you to be around and giving advice still though! And if it hasn't been said enough already we appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experiences with all of us and being willing to let out the "secrets" of your success so that we can see results as well.

On my note, put the motor together yesterday, unfortunately we found that the oil pump and front case are wrecked for the oil starvation so Im attempting to source something there now. I know I have a spare one up north from an old motor but I'm unaware of it's condition so I'll be looking at that. Might have someone who has a good one locally as well. Shouldn't be too bad of a set back, we'll see. Also ported out the new/old 2g mani as the manifold I had cracked itself a hole into the manifold to turbo bolts holes. Original owner of that one got a little too happy with the porting.

Thanks Phil!!!! I finally bought a DSM cause I was sick of always getting my ass kicked by them. LOL If you can't beat em, join em! Thanks again Phil for the info, I really appreciate it!!
Sorry to hear that your not racing this year, but I know in 2011 u'll make it into the 10's.:hellyeah:

Thanks for the words...I appreciate it! It's a bummer to say the least. And, you have it right....my priorities have big changes this year with the talon unfortunately dropping to the bottom of the list.

I will definitely still be around for sure and be here to throw my .02 in the mix and cheer all you guys on. Honestly, I'll be fine with watching some of you guys go for it this year and hopefully impress the hell out of me. And, as usual, if there are any updates to report on my end, I'll do that too.

Glad to hear your project is coming along....yeah, definitely don't want a bad oil pump assembly. That manifold must really have been ported! Well, good luck tying up the loose ends!

Sucs to hear that Phil, But as i have been reading youve been at this for awhile now. One year off isnt gonna hurt anyone.
That car will run 10's, Now its just when it will happen

Thanks! Yeah, been drag racing the car since November 1996, all on the stock turbo. There were some breaks in between over the years, but the task has always been the same. Run as quick as possible on the 14b. So, you're right, a year off won't change that. Someday, yes, I'd like to see it in the 10's. The question is wether I'll get there with the stock turbo or not. Thanks again for the words!

Anytime.........that's pretty funny! Glad you'll enjoy your DSM! It's ok man, I'll be back out at some point. I'm glad alot of you think I can reach the 10's. That is the final goal on the 14b.........

Looks like my first track day for the 14b is scheduled for March at ZMax. We'll see how this thing does. It'll be on all pump 93 with as much boost as my tuning allows. The 2g is near full stock weight, possibly more. (trying to shed some as soon as the weather warms up)

I'll trying my best for that low 12sec run before I finish rebuilding my 16g. I'd pee myself if I managed an 11 on this thing. After all, I only paid $75 for it. I curious to see how long my paperclip holds it together too :D

Is their any thing done to your auto trans (shift kit etc)? And is the paper clip an inside joke?

Since I met Phil last year at LVD I've been interested in building a 14b car. I've since sold my GSX and picked up a bone stock awd talon and since I've got a family and a mortgage it really will be a budget build for me at the moment. I think this year I'm more interested in dyno numbers rather than 1/4 mile times since I'm still on the stock clutch.

My first fwd dsm with a 14b and a couple of bolt on's was trapping the same mph as my awd dsm 16g and literally twice the amount of parts.

I did a shift kit and replaced the end clutches. I'd like to do the line pressure mod before going out, but we'll see. The thing launches hard and shifts pretty quick as is, so I am VERY curious to see what it can do with the 14b while I'm rebuilding the e3. It builds boost on the line quicker with the 14b than the 16g did, so I may rock the 14b for a while to come.

also, no joke on the paper-clip, LOL. The cotter pin that holds the actuator arm to the flapper popped of while going down the road. I grabbed some pliers, pulled the arm back on the flapper, stuck a beefy paper-clip in there and twisted it up. Been holding great, LOL.

Worst case scenario, it breaks, and then I can't hold boost. IF that happens, I can just put another paper-clip in there or find another cotter pinl.

LOL, office depot or autozone, you pick :D Sounds like if the car is running strong and if it has some weight out of it, a 11 sec pass on the evo3 16g is looking doable.

I'm starting to put together my shopping list of parts I'v got to buy for my 14b setup...looks like it's going be be a fairly large order at Summit:

One gallon fuel cell to be mounted in front of the drivers wheel $70:

Im planning to pick up an external 255hp walbro pump from autoperformancenegneineering.com $140 (unless I can find a Bosch 044 for about the same price).

-6 aeroquip lines to the fuel rail, rail to aeromotive FPR, then back to the cell. I'v got to buy pretty much the entire fuel system, it's going to be a solid $700 I think. I'd like to build it once and have it be solid for alcohol use with 14b/16g and possibly a 50lb/min turbo in the fall.

I'm on the lookout for a few used items: 1000 or 1200cc injectors, a good shape fidanza flywheel & ACT 2600 pressure plate. Also need to pick up an alt relocation kit.

The set of Volk wheels I had ended up selling for $500, so I have a bit of spendable cash. Figured the fuel system and the remaining parts that are NEEDED to put the car together is far more important than a set of light wheels that only complicates things (4lug and 15"...I'd need to change hubs/brakes & get new tires).

It's dumping snow every week here in NJ:notgood: but Im hoping to get the yellow 1g into the garage in a couple weeks and start putting things together. Gaskets and all the engine parts are here and ready to assemble once my GVR4 is off the lift. But Im doubtful on the car being track ready before late April at best.

Hey Nate you come by any JDM Galant goodies or some good conditioned rear seats. PLEASE let me know.. My rear seats are not as nice as Id like. and I'd love to update the facia of the car. Also if you have the mustache bar under the grille/ lights ever in beliz green in perfect condition, lemme know. Thanks!

Can we save this type of clutter for personal messaging or something? This is not the purpose of this thread, thanks.

^^^^ Has cluttered this thread more than anyone else.

Interesting comment. Especially when you were the one that suggested I start a blog...eh whatever. At least I know where you stand. Glad you got that out in the open.

All I'm trying to do is keep the thread on topic=14b

Lol, I wasn't going to go there.. ROFL

Anyways, there's no biggie, I was on my phone and couldn't get it to send a PM so I posted it in here, no harm no foul. Both are 14b builds, its all good.

Well, to get us back on track: one of my friends has a small civic radiator Im going to see about using. That's a smidge of weight that I bet mostly comes from reducing water volume.

It looks like tomorrow I'll finish my GVR4 rebuild, get it out of the shop, then start on the next parts car (91 AWD auto). My plan is to bring the yellow 1g into the garage and start putting it together as early as this coming weekend. I'll start a build blog on here as soon as I get started putting the engine together prior to the car coming inside.

At least you know where I stand? And where exactly is that? All I did was call you out for being a hypocrite towards someone you've made clear you don't like. I'm not taking any sides just pointing out the facts. I respect what you've done and wish I had your driver skill, not knocking that at all, but your attitude kinda sucks sometimes and you act like everyone's out to get you.

Well Dave W. comes out next week and I have a bunch of work I want done to the Galant before he arrives.

As of now I still need to do the timing belt and gather my last few bits and pieces. Those being a MAP sensor and an AIT sensor for the SD on Jackal. I scored a great deal on a socketed/rebuilt ECU as well as traded my ETS Race intercooler for an Ostrich 2.0 + cash. That cash went back into the car budget and I am still under my $2k goal. Sitting pretty close to the $1500 range for the entire build thus far.

Our first goal will be to see what we can do with the car as it sits, unported 14b and manifold. Once I scrounge a few dollars together, making sure not to take money from my Talon build, I will be going with a ported Evo 3 manifold, hotside and O2 housing on top of everything and looking at my options to run a 2.5-3" down pipe into an electric cutout which will tie back into the stock exhaust.

This car will be the epitome of a sleeper, even with the hood popped to the maximum degree. For the hell of it I might use some of the A/N line that came with it though but if any of my proclassic line from the Talon build remains I'll change out all the SS for black (only the feed line)

Look for a blog to come and a build report on Talk and maybe Link if I get bored. The name chosen for the build will be: Dr. "Jackal" & Mr. Hyde. An homage to the different personalities between Dave and I as well as the idea behind the car wolf in sheep's clothing image. (And I'm sure you catch the word play of Jackal from Jekyll giving note to its tuning system)

Things are going "too" smooth right now so I am just waiting on the headaches to pop up, then again, the smallest turbo I have ever had on one of my 4Gs was a To4B V-Trim so things will be different I'm sure. Eventually I might even swap from the 3 bolt to a 4 and remove the AWS, maybe even a 5 lug swap so I could use the QTPs from the Talon.

YES! I'm already excited about this project. I don't know how fast this car will ultimately go, but I'll give it a little push and see what it does. If everything comes together I'm sure it'll make some impressive times. No promises, I have no idea if it's a record contender as it sits since I haven't seen it yet, but I know what the 14b is capable of on a well sorted car. I'm sure it won't disapoint.

How many miles should i try to get on this new engine before i hit the track?

Also what size slicks are you guys running?

Hard to say about break in mileage. I'd change the oil at 1000 miles or so, drive another 1000, change the oil again, and then go. But, I'm sure someone that has experience with that on a more regular basis would be better with that recommendation.

The slicks are 24.5's on 15" wheels.
