The 14b Drag Race Discussion Thread

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

When the hell did this thread get so big, I just spent an hour reading all the new pages!
I am hoping to get the car running soon but as some may know I recently moved and bought a new house. That also means that I had to close my small shop and am still trying to find a nice place in Omaha. I still want to attend the Shoot-Out this year but may be able to, it depends on where I am "stationed", if I am close enough I will bring my welding rig to race. LOL

You guys were talking about wheel weights, My Bogarts weigh 8.39 pounds, they are 13 inches tall though.

IF YOU WANT TO GO ALL OUT BUY A WATER/AIR INTERCOOLER SETUP!

Do not get me started on adding weight, a good system will weigh (with water) 75 to 80 pounds. Now you are thinking wow my Air/Air only weighs 20 pounds. The benefits out weigh the added weight! The cores have less pressure drop and less restriction. The biggest benefit is that the air charge will be cooler than any Air/Air system. Shorter charge plumbing because it does not have to loop all aroundthe engine bay. So with WATER/AIR you get a colder denser air charge = more HP and shorter less restrictive air charge plumbing = faster spool, more efficient compressor!

some really light wheel are volk ce28n's the 15 inch weigh 7.72 pounds a piece. plus they are not ridiculously expensive, but not cheap either.

Volk Racing CE28N Wheel 15x6 5x114.3

another way is a fuel cell. ebay has some 5 gallon plastic one's for 100 bucks

Everyone's talking about water/air setup why not just use water injection? It's lighter and probably cools just as good. Only downside I guess would be the pressure drop of the IC compared to the water/air IC, which I didn't know was better until spoonman's post.

I am a firm believer EVERY turbocharged vehicle (new and old) should run chemical injection whether it be powered by diesel or gasoline. 99gst Racer (you know the Moderator) is testing pre-compressor chemical injection in another thread, I was very skeptical at first, but after reading more results this taboo idea is sounding very appealing.

Depending on the manufacturer a Water/Air intercooler core is basically a "normal" intercooler that has the air charge flowing through the opposite end. Kind of like a radiator.

I actually have in my possession a set of 15x7" ce28n's that came off a GVR4 I parted out, thus they are 4x114.3 bolt pattern. On my shipping scale, they are 9.5lb. I doubt going to a 6" wide wheel would be almost 2lb lighter, although I wish it were so.

I have been seeing this thread pop up over and over again and had zero interest in it till I set my eyes on a GVR4 I will hopefully get my hands on that is coming with a 14b (I'll go E3 eventually) but in the mean time what a blast it will be to see this thing run. Mind you guys I have never owned a DSM with anything smaller than a V trim and current car being built is a s475 (Probably the biggest turbo on a DSM) so I LOVE the contrast between the biggest and the smallest (besides the pitiful T25s and 13gs etc..)

I am loving every bit of this thread. Very intelligent conversation from the guys with the smallest, well... you know. :tease: :p I'm eying a ostrich setup and I'll be turning to you Dave to help me get this baby going. I am thinking e85, no intercooler with meth injection i.e. Lucas or if possible a SMIC with enough efficiency to get the job done, still running e85 w/ meth injection. Unfortunately my ETS 1g intercooler wont fit so I have to sell it. I'm just excited to hopefully be back on the road before the next major event. Help me out Dave, I think we can get some good numbers, even in a GVR4. :aha:

Hi Josh, yeah a GVR-4 is a fun and practical car! I'd be glad to tune if for you. I can work wonders with an Ostrich, whatever you want I can do it.

Phil, it looks like there's still some weight in your car. You still have the rubber seals around the doors and hatch! OMG

Sounds good Dave. I am working out some deals on this thing (its in a billion pieces!) and if all goes well it will be sitting at my house in a couple weeks from now and put together and built some time that week  I found an Ostrich but I still need to source an AIT and a map. I'll keep you in the know. I wanna see what we can do with that 14b on a Galant before I rip it out for Eddies "16g" :shhh:

Awesome Phil... car looks great man. Thanks for posting pics.

Thanks! No prob. I wish I had video, but, I don't. There is a vid of an 11.66 run still hanging around I just can't get the guy to throw it up, sucks.

Since you dont have the center portion of the wing, why not just take off the rest of it? More weight right? I dont have a wing at all, my car looks just fine...

It is all off actually, and now I have to fill it in with black vinyl. I'm not thinking it looks so bad....I did have two '90 Lasers and loved the subtle look, BUT, with that said, I'm partial to the '90-'91 Talon full wrap spoiler. It is my favorite look of any DSM. So, the car is getting away from why I like it so much aesthetically, but in the effort to run quicker than 11.49 I will sacrifice all of that and know that I can convert it back once I'm not so concerned with every last ounce lost.

:DThere is still much weight that can come out, at least 100 lbs., but, I'm not gonna go too crazy with it much longer I don't think. Yeah, I keep the rubber seals on the doors for an airtight seal! The hatch seal doesn't even touch the hatch in most places!

I'm really looking to relieve myself of constantly working on the talon in the future. At least working on it with the only goal in mind being run a quicker ET at the strip on the 14b. It's becoming to be a bit much and yes, the thought and all that goes into getting another tenth quicker has been a really cool process, but, ultimately, at this point, after the progress in 2009, the return will be minimal no matter what I do. That's my honest opinion. I don't believe the car has much left in it at all, even with cams, balance shaft removal, extrude intake, and maybe 50 lbs.of reduction left in it after adding the rollbar in. The earliest I will race this year is most likely in July, unless I hit a test and tune, but those are so busy its usually not worth my time or money. So, I would wait til the first track rental by the local CCDSM. Gives me enough time to get the rollbar in and other things.

I was wondering this as well. I like the "race spoiler" look of your car, but i also like the naked deck lid like on my car as well.

Talk to Phil, but hurry, he's loosing motivation in the drag racing topic quickly. I'm not sure if he would still want to upgrade the EVO8 FMIC for road racing or not.

Remember that it's much more rewarding when the tracks are open and you can see the difference in your E/Ts after your hard work.

Those mods would still help you in the road race world and you already have the cams and the b-shaft kits are really cheap. Lets not forget to mention you're still running a 6cm turbine housing! Phil i think with your driving and a few more upgrades, this car could see the lowest side of 11's. Between: more efficient cams (i know you would still have to purchase the spring and retainer kit yet), balance shaft removal (weight savings and less drag on engine-i thought you would be all over this), extrude hone intake manifold to accompany those new cams for more pull, a ported 7cm turbine housings, and a more efficient FMIC like the one TSIimage needs to sell :sneaky:, i think that you would have to see a big difference. Now lets not just look at the E/T benefit side of things and how much money this would set you back. Anything you do to make your car quicker on the 1320, will make the car faster on the road course, permitting it's in the power range your looking for. I think between now and July, you could get the springs and retainers to install those cams, a balance shaft removal kit and maybe even the SMIM or a new FMIC. It's a lot more fun working on the car when you can go race it that week end. Keep at Phil, we're rooting for ya.

Here's a pick of my laser with no rear spoiler "mine came like that."

Phil,
By the looks of the interior trunk picture you posted it looks as if there is some bracing that can be removed. STM has a build thread tittled "TIN CAN" and they removed the brace that runs from the top of the wheel wells and accross the floor. It might not be the best thing to remove for chassis stiffnes but if the car needs a cage your putting the strength back into it. Looks like you can also remove some more bracing in the back by the latch asembly for the hatch and the tail lights. Don't give up on this as a drag car just yet. I see an 11.00 in the future. I think it may come easier then you think. Maybe even a small shot of nitrous would make things interesting?

I hear you and it is awesome when you get a slip back that improves somehow. But, there are other elements at work here that I wouldn't mention up here on the forums. It's not just that I'm running out of steam and that's the end of it. So, don't think that. We'll see how much time I can devote to it. That's gonna be the big one.

I do have the b-shaft removal kit already as well. So I need valve springs basically. I won't buy a SMIM, I really believe that's a waste of my time and money, and even if it worked, the performance per dollar is pretty low. Like I've said elsewhere, I'd consider Extrudehone on the stock intake mani, that's it. If you think all this stuff will help, that's good, and I'm sure you're right, but, I don't think I'm going to gain too much....I mean pneumo dropped 324 to the ground with higher comp, no b-shafts, cams, headwork, etc. I'm still on original 7.8:1 and I just can't see even matching his power. So, let's drop in the middle of my power and his and say I put down 310....15 peak isn't going to do anything, but, if there's significant gains across the band, it may be enough to create some more speed. I will also do a comp check this spring and see if there has been any siginificant changes there. If so, than maybe at some point I'd consider finally gaining the power advantage that others have enjoyed and then paired with the weight of my car, and yes, some driving, gains could be significant. I can't see my comp being that bad though, the car pulls way too strong. FMIC is a must, maybe not so for roadracing as I would drop boost off to 16psi where the car still makes 285 HP and 290 TQ at the ground. Big FMIC sucks in road racing if it blocks all air to the radiator, but that's easy enough to reconfigure and I won't let that be a factor here. I want a new FMIC for sure.

Trav, thanks for the words! I want to keep at it at least for the 2010 season, but, I can't guarantee anything on that front. It's really all up in the air. What I can guarantee, is that while I think it's great that there are so many options for 14b power being talked about up here, I definitely will not be stepping outside the box with my car as far as set up goes. Which means:

-no 2G head/EVO 3 intake
-no SMIM
-no tubular exhaust mani
-no methanol
-no E85
-no meth/water injection
-definitely no air/water I/C

While I have interest in the above, it wouldn't matter if 5 guys run 10 second passes with those set-ups on the 14b, I still wouldn't do it. I enjoy doing alot with a little. And, even my current set-up has started to move away from that idea in some ways. And even though it's that very idea I stick by that makes my effort so drawn out and is tiring me some, when goals are met it is worth it.

Things I'd consider:

1.DSM Link
2.ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

This would however change if my engine lost it's mojo....as I've said.

Some things I want to say that may help explain my thoughts are that at one time, there were alot of us into these cars around here and we were a tightknit group. That has not been the case in many years. I don't hang around with what I call "new-school" DSMr's in the area. We seem to clash for whatever reason. So, I don't really have many people that can come around and give me a hand anymore. Sometimes, I need a hand. I do almost everything by myself. You know, everyone is doing their own thing, which is easily understandable. It just makes it tough to get motivated to do anything really when you don't have anyone around that shares the common interest. And, like many people, I don't have use of a shop or lift. So, it makes tasks take much longer and is harder on me as well.
I just don't have that fire that I used to possess. Not sure if I said anything but when I made that first 11 second pass last year, and was handed the slip, I didn't exclaim anything, I made a quiet motion and just felt relief. Five years ago I would have been screaming so loud they would have heard me back at the staging lanes.

I feel an extreme sense of accomplishment in my 13 years of owning the talon. It has been an awesome progression. I've made and lost many friends in the DSM world. Was I first in the 10's, well, hell no, I'm still not there! The 9's, nope. But, I think I've had a decent contribution to the DSM community by stretching the stock turbo/engine combination to the farthest reach. And, it's only me that can choose to end that journey, ultimately, it could continue on. Anyone that thinks I wouldn't have been running single digit ET's more than 7 years ago is sadly mistaken. I mean, working for Extreme, I'm sure a suitable combination could have been materialized. But, I had other interests as well, and going further on the 14b posed a challenge that I just loved to attack. It was my goal with the car from very early on, basically as soon as I read the article about Marc Hallman's 12.57 effort. It started then, and continued on as others went faster, I just kept on. And furthermore, the car's configuration has had several changes over the years, but, the basic theme remains the same:

STOCK ENGINE
STOCK TURBO
BOLT-ONS
LIGHTWEIGHT
MAXIMIZE DRIVING SKILL

It's still my theme after all this time.

I've been a 14b guy right from the start.

So, while Nate makes a good point about the essence of a 14b car is one with hand me down parts and very little investment, I agree, that is one way to describe it for sure.

For me, the 14b has been the essence of my existence in the DSM world, not only the heart that lets my talon breathe. So, after such a long stint, it's natural, with other elements considered, my interest can run thin at times.

It's been an awesome run so far.......I do have more to contribute....I'll see what I can do.

Thanks guys:thumb:

For reference the 1g wrap-around spoiler weighs in at 20lbs total with all 5 pieces. ;)

Plus maybe one more pound for all the hardware and mounts you think?

That bracing is almost fully removed now. Stopped working on it, too cold. I will remove some of the bracing at the rear near the latch, and the two pieces where the hatch struts used to mount.

I'm not giving up, for sure. But as I mentioned above, there are some other elements that may keep me out of the game for a while. If 11.0 came easier than I think, that would be great. You all may be right. I do feel that the car will perform better on a warmer day than last October and so that me get me closer without anything different.

Not really sure about the NOS, Nate has consistently suggested it. I still remain that I probably wouldn't consider it without first exhausting the last bolt-ons I do have. It would be interesting to see what a small shot would do though.

Thanks for the words:thumb:

I've been contemplating the idea since talking with Lucas at BOTI a year ago and seeing his Talon run and with the annoying dilemma that is faced when running an intercooler on a GVR4 (retarded) I'll be going Intercooler-less and spraying meth on top of the E85. It will make for some very interesting results and at least until our dead hot summers kick in I should actually benefit from it. I say we extract what we can out of this 14b until it dies and then we'll move on to the next TDo5 and try it all over again. ;P

Ostrich, No intercooler, E85, Meth injection, GVR4.. Damn, what a stretch from my s475 automatic DSM LOL!

You ready to work that magic Dave? Hell I'll letcha drive too. Hahaha, ever rocked a GVR4? Me neither.. Should be fun!

That's a nice offer! What's the best time for a GGVR-4 on a 14B? I've always wanted to see what it could do. I also want to try out some ideas I have for tuning E85/Meth. Want to team up and see what we can do?

 I'm gonna go ahead and say you are lucky to be rockin a vr4 and Dave is even luckier if you'll let him drive it. I would love to get behind a vr-4 and just putz around town and maybe make some kid on the highway in a honda ask how a 4 door grocery getter just owned him. If i didn't buy my awd I would have had all the funds available to purchase a well worked over vr-4 right now... its what I orginally wanted. I say owning a vr-4 is the prestige of owning a dsm as its pretty much how it all began.

Sounds great to me Dave, I have my own place now, so any time you are out in Sac you are welcomed to stay here, no more driving back and forth for Weekend events. Only one car garage but ya gotta start some where right? Lol, by this time next year I'll skip 2 and go straight to 3 car garage.

Weather should be perfect though coming up. :thumb: If all else fails, we can roll the Talon out and park it in the drive way LOL.

As far as the GVR4 on a 14b, I'm not sure. I wouldn't be surprised if it is somewhere in the mid 12s region. Not to many of them keep the 14b it seems. You'd almost think they all came with 16gs stock. :ohdamn::rolleyes:

The way I see it, I have an easy 100+ lbs on you so what ever I run, I'm sure you'll run it faster hahaha.

First things first is getting my hands on some 5 lug, that way I can run my QTPs from my Talon. ABS and A/C is gone already (I'll be putting A/C back in eventually, it will be a 100% street car BTW) But I am also tossing around the idea of removing the 4WS.

On the other hand, I want to see what this baby can do out the box with Dave working his magic... I still have to get my hands on an AIT and MAP sensor for the SD and a few other odds and ends. Do you have any parts left from your part out Dave?

Lets have some fun with this thing! That way you don't have to convert your Talon back to a 14b, you can keep breaking records with the Jackal software.. The idea is to get you so comfortable with that thing, I can run Ostrich on my Talon with a competent tuner opposed to running AEM EMS.

I feel you on that one bro. I use to own a 3000GT VR4 before I had the DSM so I already know how it feels to rock that "VR4" badging. It has a nice ring to it. I remember the first time I ran into a Galant VR4, I passed it off as another "box", just like the old Corollas, Accords, Sentras, etc.. One pulled up to me at a light and revved... I don't think I laughed that hard prior. I egged the guy on acting like I was going to punch it, light turned green, I sat there and he TOOK OFF! WTF OMG I sped up, caught up to him and this time I knew something was up. We lined up, I held my RPMS around 3K, he had some sort of studderbox action going on and we left at the same time, kneck and kneck. I slowly pulled away from him, but the whole time I'm thinking, "Ahhhhh hell naw!"

I put a couple cars on him in the end but it was way too close for comfort. Afterwards he sat at my 1/4 panel, not wanting to pass (embarrassment?) but finally did, and that's when I laid eyes on the VR4 badge on it, I thought "Ricer has a VR4 badge on his sleeper..." Went home and was doing a write up on VR2 setups and using WRX 13t turbos for the 3Si boards, accidentally ended up on a Galant forum sharing information with some 6g guys and saw a section dedicated to the "Galant VR4" and ever since I have wanted one LOL.

Now I have one and its on like Donkey Kong! My drag build will be taking a back seat until further notice. :hellyeah::rocks:

But don't let the guys over at the GVR4 boards find out you called their car a DSM. :shhh::nono:

Sounds like a cool project. I've wondered what my talon drivetrain would do in my VR4 but that's a hell of alot of work to find out. If I remember reading correctly, the quickest VR4 on 14b is 12.3@109 I think....so there's a benchmark for you to shoot for. Good luck!

Phil i'm glad you're going to keep trying as long as your personal life allows. Heck i know where you're coming from. I've been working "part time" for over a year now. Granted i work or i'm on call 7days a week but it's not a steady pay check some weeks. Luckily my wife has a good job, which worries me because she is thinking about changing jobs. If that falls through, we're both in big trouble. But if it works out well, it will be a big pay increase and you guys might be reading about me building up my block LOL.

It is colder than hell on earth out there, but i think if you're able to, once it warms up a bit i would try to install the parts you have laying around so when the tracks open you're ready to give it all you and your talon got. FYI, doing the balance shaft removal with the engine in the car is not much fun. If you plan on cracking open the engine in any other way ie: cam install, i would probably recomend just pulling out the engine if you have access to a cherry picker. It's still doable, but wasn't very fun.

As for the SMIM, yeah i meant the extruded honed one. A smim would probably be way too much overkill for a 14b i would assume.

As for a small shot of nitrous on your car, wow. With a 1.4 60' as it is, i would think that you wouldn't be able to spray of the line. I think You would spin the slicks at that point, or get a record breaking 60' time. I think hitting in your top gear would probably give that 14b the boost it needs on top. No pun intended.

Sometimes i forget that your main theme with this car is to be a minimalist. I forget this cause with my car, i'm just trying to get some more respectable 14b times (say low 12's street car) by making this thing light while staying streetable. Then once i meet that goal i'd like to put on a bigger turbo and see if can't drop a second off my e/t. Should make for a really fun car. Fairly light making 400-500 awhp.
Well Phil, give it your best as you always do, and do what you can. Keep us posted.

BTW: How's the GVR4 treating you, has it been your snow car lately?

14b potential. Amazing thread here.

I am looking to run some good times this year on the 14b myself and am contemplating a few upgrades.

So far the upgrades go as such,

14b, ported 6cm housing
2.5 tubular o2/external dump
stock engine minus balance shafts
wally 190
evo9 560's
maf-t
Safc
act 2900 (yeah i know, overkill, but it works great and i got it for a steal!) with a street disk
act streetlight
built tranny (evo forks and rails, double synchros and some other stuff)
3 inch turboback
boost/oil press/ AEM UEGO Wbo2
MBC
shfter mods (bearings on the cables, aluminum bushings elsewhere)
Evo8 FMIC w/ custom long route piping
Punishment racing radiator (cause the stock one was junk anyways)
minor weight reduction (rear crash beam, half the front crash beam, sound deadening and misc brackets. (will be removing the rear seats for track days)
1g bov (stock, probably replacing with a Tial soon)

Now, I'm definitely ditching the S-afc for ECMlink V3 lite, but will keep the Maf-t for now, becuase I already have it, and i cant sell it for the difference to upgrade to full V3. (440 for lite with the eprom conversion versus 665 for full v3)

the two other mods I am currently considering for the car this year to max out the 14b (and subsequently prepare for the 16g/68hta) are:

Cams (thinking a 264/272 would be best here... Opinions?)
Fp Race manifold. Gots to be better than the stock unported 1g auto (yes i opened up the outlet) manifold on there now.

Anything else i should consider before these mods?
