DAVE is the one on the budget, not the car. He's never really cheaped out on anything that went into this car- he's just proving that with enough determination anyone can get to his goal no matter what their budget may be. He's worked three jobs at once in the past just to fund his car- there are no excuses!

relax, i wasn't knocking dave or the build, just saying what was so impressive in the beggining was that it was done on a very simple build/budget, and it was insiring to a lot of people to think about running similar times on a near similar setup. And now with things like the dog box, the budget has exceeded what a lot of people have to spend on their builds and puts the car sorta out of the realm of what your average guy can afford to spend on building his car up.

if dave works three jobs to build his car then i commend him for his commitment, and anyone else that determined to have the same things can follow his example and work their asses off too (again this is all good things on Dave's behalf).

All i'm saying is the most impressive part of him running 10's was how cheaply he had done it in the begining, but now costs are going up to where the car is more expected to be in the 10 second bracket simply because of what's gone into it. There's a lot of cars in the 10's on here if you look at peoples avatars, (more than i thought there would be surprisingly) but most of them have quite a bit of money in their cars. Once the build exceeds a certain dollar amount it doesn't become such a surprising feat for it to be running that time bracket, but more of an expectation, and i think the fact that how cheaply it went fast in the begining was what had so many people excited. (at least that was the most impressive part of it in my opinion)

if that offends anyone i'm sorry but it's not meant to and i'm not hating on anyone and in fact i plan to follow Dave's progress for quite a while longer, just because it's now out of the realm of my budget or most other peoples doesn't mean it's a reason to hate on anyone.

I got sick of having to get the stage4 rebuilt, every time I would break an axle off the line it would shadder the synchro springs, plus their a ticking time bomb!
Also the synchros didn't like the abuse that I was giving them, I have had the synchros replaced 3 times sence I've owned it!

Let the trans laugh at the power Im giving it, big deal this is the last trans I will ever need.... My plans are 8s in the next year or two.
Just gotta get into the nines first, it hasnt been easy, or cheap!

It takes alot of time and money to get it capable of running 9's and 8's, and alot of seat-time for the driver to consistently get it there.

Alot of people have absolutely no idea how much it takes to break into the 9's. There are around 40 1G's and 20 2G's that have ever hit 9's (including RWD, FWD and AWD platforms) in the community. Some are just lucky and hit it once or twice, and very few actually are consistent at those times due to the reliability of these cars at that power level as well as just driver consistency.

Heck, I have only done a handful of 9's with my car in the last 4 years and have spent ALOT of money in that period of time to make it go faster. The combination was good back in 2007, and I have been trying to make the current combination work since 2008. Now I am going to try out a different turbo to see if I can make a better combination that will be more reliable and consistent. Hopefully it will bring me better ET's next year.

As for Dave's car, the stage 4 will only last so long; he has a heavy hand and likes to shift hard. Shattered synchros and shift forks are common occurrences with him due to his driving style, and it gets costly to repair all the time. Though you do need to maintain a PPG dogbox with fresh parts on occasion, it is substantially better for making consistent drag racing passes with fast shifts and are made to be shifted fast without worries of shattering synchros. It will only benefit him to run a dogbox.

I wish him good luck in hitting his ET's, it isn't easy; even in a race car, let alone in a street car. You need to bring your A-game to make it happen.

As for Shep's car running those times in the past on a helical transmission, he had them lasting a very short period of time and would swap out transmissions very regularly and refresh them. They were not lasting several seasons at a time at his ET's and power levels. Anyone that thinks their race transmission is going to last years of abuse at high power levels is dreaming; it is a wearable part and requires refreshing on occasion. Nothing is bullet-proof; not even dogboxes; they still break, they still wear, they still cost more money than the initial investment and dogboxes have more expensive parts to replace every time.

Dave Is my hero

Even with the build now exceeding my budget it will still be awesome to see him get into the 9's. With goals coming up of possible 8's in the future will be amazing. Very few can sit back and say they have an 8 second drag car. Let alone an 8 second 4 cylinder or an 8 second dsm. Yes I know you have to run 9's before 8's are achievable or even dreamable for the matter but the fact remains the same. Hes running 10 flat on a budget and on a type of build some people cant get out of the mid elevens. I'll be lucky to see low twelves with the way my car is and I feel I have too much money invested into it right now. More money to be spent shortly on a trans as well. If a dogbox is TRUELY streetable then somehow I might consider one. More then likely I 'll be rocking a synchro transmission though. Its just so much cheaper.

I'm assuming to get an 8 second pass on this car not only would it have to lose some more weight and ofcourse get all the nhra stuff but a turbo upgrade to an hx-52 would be required?

Now stop talking and fast foward the calender to the night when we are all on the forum waiting from either dave or justin to give us the update that we've been waiting for. Go out there and set another record. This time single digits!!!

Thanks man!
No one is really hating on it, just their opinion which is fine! Funny thing is, I never paid $6k for my dogbox, not even near that!!! We will leave it at that..:sneaky:

ha. Plus to ad about "not being such a budget" ...im sure the old trans was sold to help pay for the dogbox. Its not like he just took 6k and dumped it like it was nothing. (and they guys who sold u the dogbox also bought my cf hatch!)

I am trying to get Bill to make a Batmowheel for my GT4094r LOL He says if there is interest hmm. Lol the last time I drove my car at a track it was running 13.5s at 10 psi with an safc on my 54 trim and a slipping clutch. Talk about a turd. I am curious to see what it will run now.

Don't every one forget, he is doing this on a smallish turbo. Most people that are running 9's do it on a turbo that is 62mm+ It's easier to run 9.99 at 150 than at 140

There's also people running 9's in 3200-3300lb cars :)

WOW, this thread is going to shit! Its now a pissing contest:rolleyes:

I cant wait to see how it turns out Dave, best of luck, Im rooting for you!

And people running 9's at 135 mph :thumb:

True. I'm not trying to start dick swinging contest or anything. I'm just saying that if he had another 100hp, he wouldn't have to have a trans that shifts as good, or leave the line so hard.

I'm implying that believe it takes less effort to run a 9 when you let the sheer power (trap speed) do the work, vs. beating it into a 9 with a killer(perfect) pass.

Yanno your right… I’d like the mods to go in and delete all my “pissing” comments. This is more of a commemorative thread about your accomplishments and I wish you the best! Good luck!

I’ll put it back in my pants now I promise.

Your post just sounded to me like, im a shitty driver, cause i havent ran a nine yet, at 135mph, let alone im trapping 145, and still cant do it! I admit, my 60fts have been shitty this year, im doing my best! My trans has been garbage all year, untill Tim rebuilt it for me....After getting it rebuilt i had boost controler issues, and just didnt have enough seat time to do it at the shootout.

No worries Dave, it's not exactly easy to drive a car with that much power, but you're doing a pretty damn good job from your vids I've watched. You're going to run 9's this season, I'm sure of it. It always seems these cars always have the most pain in the ass little issues at the wrong times :banghead:. Keep it up and keep us updated, we (well most of us), enjoy following your progress :thumb:

Sorry for that, no disrespect intended. Wasn't directing anything at you personally. It was more towards the uninformed "racers" thinking they need a combo similar to yours to make a 10 second pass. Your setup is above and beyond a 9.99 ET car, and still very impressive for the limited resources put in it... IMHO. Once you get that 1/8th dialed in, that old 9.99 slip will look slow! :hellyeah:

That really does show, weather your trying to break in to the nine's or just looking to drop a tenth or two off your personal best E/T, if you did really good in the past, you're going to have to do even better to beat it.

I ran 12.4 on a stock turbo. I put on a pretty decent sized 7blade HX35 and dropped about a half second and maybe 7-10 mph gained. After a while i ran 11.7@123. I started to hit a wall and rebuilt my bottom end due to low compression. The new engine ran GREAT and i took it back to the track, now the trans doesn't want to shift great. So i rebuilt the trans, engine running better than ever, i make some shift cable adjustments the day before the track and miss shift 2-3-2 bending valves.

There really is a lot of things to go wrong and to get a new best they all have to work in harmony. Hopefully your next trip to the track everything will fall in it's place Dave, good luck 9's baby!!

...so i stopped by Justin's shop tonight, and got a sneek peek of the new Hx40 with the new wheel going on your car Dave....IT. IS. BEAUTIFUL. ;)

You come tell us that it's beautiful and you don't even have pictures of it ?! :p

How come this 9 second pass is taking so long!!! I can't take it. I'll take your car to the track and attempt it for ya ;)

Hey talon dave I say your car at the shootout and I was the guy with the afro and batman shirt when u had boost issues and you were next to tim. I am the guy with the green 2g with the hx40 that made 685. I haven't had the moey for the track this year. I just wanna wish you luck on your quest for 9's you have been h doing real good with your car so far. Can't wait to see you accomplish your goal.

Yeah I remember you! I'm doing my best with the car to get my goal, which changes all the time, but anyway, I'm going to the track Thursday for the last time this year, so hopefully it happens! I'm also going to do some dynoing in November, with the old hx40, along with the Batmowheel 40, so Hoping for some good numbers!

Also, If anyone is interested, my old 6 blade pro Hx40, will be forsale after we do the dynoing, so make sure you scoop it up, before its gone....Either me or Justin, will have it in the classifieds!
