I was driving down the road, I shifted to third gear and there was nothing there, it just reved up like it was in nuetral. When i went to go to a stop light i shifted down to first and my car just came to a dead stop and started backing up, so I put it in third to see if i could get it to move and it got stuck in third, i wont come out of the gear i tried pulling on the shifter and it wont budge out of the gear. Is it the links? or is it internal?

This is an old post from earlier, so I don't know if you are still watching for any updates, but sounds from the way you put it that it shifted into reverse instead of first. Either, as already stated, something has come loose with the linkage or something internal is broken. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if one of the cables came loose / off, the shifter could still function, just not correctly. ex. you would still have front / back motion but no side / side or vice-versa. It sounds to me though, that you have a problem with the side / side motion as in the engaging reverse instead of first. The same problem can also be traced to the arms on the transmission, following the same logic. I would go out to the garage to check which cable does which, but it is about 20 degrees outside and i'm comfy inside. :p

Easy test? Have a friend watch linkage on tranny as you move the shifter. If both arms move as shifter is moved through the gear pattern, problem is internal, or one of the arms may be slipping on the rods that go into the tranny. Check bolts, cables, etc before expecting the worst.

Hope this helps, if you are still here, that is. :)

I had a somewhat similar problem happen to me. Turns out the bolts that hold the linkage to the top of the transmission had came out! Miraculously they were sitting right there on top of the transmission so i screwed them back in. I still occasionally inspect the bolts to see if they're tight because it was a pretty scary experience i wouldn't want to go through again! :dsm:

When this happen to me what happened was the shift fork had blown out, had to rebuild my tranny, the cables were a little loose, but all it means is that I had to rebuild my tranny :|

Thats exactly what happened to my car, you get it in 5th, 3rd does not exist, and you have to REALLY pull it out, that is your shift fork is burnt out, I have seen this happen twice and it is always the same issue.

I rebuilt my entire transmission so it cost me a little over 1k, however I rebuilt the ENTIRE tranny. Every part was replaced besides the case. I have mine for my 420 engine for sale :\

What may have happened is the fork may have bound or stuck the mechanisms between two gears. Hopefully it did not bend. How hard have you been yanking on the shifter to try to get it out / in gear? Also, which linkage was loosest? Unbolt the cable and try moving just THAT link. Don't go prying on it or you will do even more damage, if there is any. If it does not move with light to medium pressure, it is stuck. If it moves, reattach and try the same with the other link, unbolt, try to move, etc. Also, you may to have someone gently rock the car while you are doing this.

Best case scenario, you will get it to pop free and (all community fingers are crossed) you will have no permanent damage. If one is jammed, you probably have something internal (shift fork, gear, etc.) damaged. At least by narrowing down where you have a problem, you can be more informed when you talk to your mechanic to have the work done. Again may I say DON"T PRY OR FORCE ANYTHING. you will only make things worse.

Good Luck.
