Stock looking 1g with rear mount turbo, thoughts?

I was just thinking about this idea over and over again. I just had to see what some of the great minds on here had to say about it. Something along the lines of, SD setup(Dsmlink), Evo 3 16g, huge A/A intercooler or A/W intercooler or LOTS of Methanol, slap a BLOX velocity stack/filter combination on the inlet of each turbo, or cold air intake with a BLOX setup, and the other supporting mods. Then rear mount a turbo that usually would not be streetable, or within your rev range.

If you wanted to, you could even keep the whole stock 1G or 2G exhaust manifold/turbo/o2 housing/downpipe setup on the car, and then focus on the rear mounted turbo. I would imagine the stock trim turbo would make the car flow enough exhaust gases to spool a large turbo the way a larger displacement engine would. Taking it a step further, adding boost with the smaller turbo could help the bigger, rear mounted turbo spool faster. You could also open a muffler up and hollow it out, then mount the exhaust housing/o2 housing in the muffler. Find a flange that is identical to the inlet of your turbo and weld it to a tube for the inlet of the muffler. Then find a find a flange that is identical to the outlet of the o2 housing flange and weld it to a tube for the outlet of the muffler. This will encase the hotside of the turbo, which will make the turbo work better because of the energy that is conserved in the form of heat, it will help hide the turbo, and protect it. I would also use some sort of heat/rock shield around the compressor housing of the turbo for the same reasons.

I know that people have done twin turbo setups on 4 cylinder engines and larger, one that I know of on this website. This is just an idea of mine, one of too many.. I always think about throwing it out there, but never do..

Rear mout turbo's are less efficient than under hood. The closer you get to the exhaust port, the more heat you have to drive the turbine. The further away, the more heat is wasted on radiation from the pipe.
 
True, but check out the power that some of the V8 cars are making on very low boost with rear mount turbo kits. It might not be the optimal setup, but that does not mean you cannot make a LOT of power with it.

The whole idea is, no more lag then a factory trim turbo, but a whole lot more top end. This makes for an all around faster car. Instead of getting a turbo in your lag or engine range, you can step up to a much bigger one. Lets just say you make 100WHP with a stock 1G engine without the turbo, its probably less, that power is a good sign of its exhaust flow capabilities. That flow and power is all that drives our turbos, for the most part. Now take that same 1g and make 300whp out of it with a 16G, the amount of exhaust that is coming out of the turbo/o2 housing at that power level is similar to that of a LS1. Now, go check out how much power and how big of turbos these guys run in the rear mount position, or how fast a single turbo spools up on an LS1.

I do not disagree with the ideal position, closest to the head ports. But, many of us have less then ideal setups that are more then capable.
 
You are not wrong, they are generally used on V8 powered cars. But, they use it because of the lack of engine space, the sleeper stock look, and ease of installation(Not really much under the hood other then the upper intercooler pipe).

Just imagine a car that looks stock, and acts stock, until you put the pedal to the metal.
 
What other engine/car was it done to? It might not be special, but nothing for us to ever do or consider, why is that?

Consider that we don't have too much room to work with on the under body to begin with where would you consider putting the turbo at?
 
Why do it? Any dumb a$$ is going to see the intercooler or pipes and know what is up. Why not just build a stock (looking) car??? All the extra fab work for oil lines and intercooler pipes for what to make the car have more lag?
 
What other engine/car was it done to? It might not be special, but nothing for us to ever do or consider, why is that?

Maxima & Mustang, I didnt like it at all, and first thought in my head would be how easy to damage the turbo or for somemone to just come lay under the back unbolt the turbo and be happy how easy it was to steal. Just doesnt seem like there is any room down there on the ones that was installed. Dropped or not Dropped. I was the Maxima one being put together, even the person at the shop thought it was stupid and a waste of time, including me and every single friend of mines who was with me plus some.
