New to DSM's and new to modified cars. Just bought a modified GSX. It’s tuned on DSMLink and has bigger cams, custom headers with side exit (cat and muffler delete). Fuel injectors and pump have been upgraded and and electric fan installed (that runs before the car is started, as soon as key is switched to on position).

My trouble is getting it started and here’s my clues.

When I bought the car the owner had it plugged in, he started it but he had to give it some gas to get it going and keep it alive. Then the tow truck driver started it the same way with no major issues. Then I started it when I got home the same way with no major issues. But it didn’t start the next time. So I replaced the batteries thinking the original one was faulty. This then got the car to start with a few tries.

But the next day when I went to start it, it wouldn’t start again. It turns over, and sometimes I get a few pops but not much. I’m thinking for some reason the car needs a real lot of current to start because of the mods, but I have no real idea why.

Was wondering if anyone can shed some light of the possible cause and the best possible solution. Thanks 🙏

It’s a 2g 1997 forgot to mention!

i Didn’t in my video but some of the time I get some pops and she wants to start so the spark might be weak but it’s getting spark. I’ll test all 4 tomorrow. I can smell the fuel coming from the side exit so that’s good ( I can smell it a lot) .
That smell is unburned fuel coming out of the exhaust because the plugs aren't able to ignite it. Even if they look okay, they're cheap enough where it would be better to just replace them.

I suspect the spark plugs are fuel fouled at this point and I'm wondering if the ECT sensor is working. Let's get a log from DSMLink and see what's going on.

I'd also redo the battery terminals, the rust on the Allen screws and the attachment of the alternator cable are questionable.

Yes definitely smells like unburnt fuel. It sputters some of the time and pops so they are working somewhat but maybe struggling to ignite with a weak spark until the cylinder head gets warm.

Thanks! I'm going to try to get the DSMLink software set up today, and I’ll see if I can get new terminals or rust clean the ones I got. I’ll be back here after I tackle all that. Thanks a ton for the help guy, I would be completely lost with out the help from u guys and all the other old information on this site 🙏🙏🙏

I see you still havnt filled out a vehicle profile. You would t have to list everything if you did have one.

Maybe we need to restrict new members. To make a vehicle profile b4 they are allowed to just post nilly willy

Didn’t spark test but clearly they need to be replaced. Going to pick some up today and see if that helps

New spark plugs where put in, and freshly charged the battery and kept it connected to the donor car (volt meter in the car was up to 13 instead of 11.7 ish where it normally was). She fired right up! Let it idle for a while then started it back up to make sure it wasn’t a fluke and it started again even quicker. 🙏🙌.

Thanks for the help everyone. I assume I have a combination of issues all making it hard to start and the spark plugs being shitty was just the straw that broke the camels back. So checking out the ECMLink data is the next step and keeping an eye on this battery’s voltage.

I recommend getting ecmlink up and running and post a log on here before you go and beat this car.

Not saying that’s your intentions but it’s only gonna help us know more about the car and possible issues that can be fixed with a simple click of a button.

Post an ecmlink log of it idling so we know how things are configured and how well it is calibrated. Make sure things like injectors, fuel pump, and any other modifications are what you think they are. In other words verify that the injectors are xyz brand and xxx part number.

For cold starts and idling, the bpr6es plugs are hotter and work better. Swap to 7’s when you get it running better. The oil may need changed, it is likely diluted with fuel.

Yeah, absolutely no boost yet. Hopefully it has a wideband!

I definitely will do that. Just downloaded ecm tuning on my computer… wish it was a laptop tho LOL. Going to bring it out tomorrow with an extension cord and see if I can figure it out enough to get some data to post here. Thanks again guys 🙏
