Sounds good Phil. I requested the day off work on Sunday Aug 16 to go spectate at the E-town shoot out, but someone took off so i have to find someone to cover my shift if i want to go. So i'll be begging some guys the next couple days.
I've been driving the laser here and there around town lately but when i do i have to granny shift it in to second, i guess i was ripping it a little to hard last couple visits to the track. But like i said, a buddy of mine is going to VA next month and is going to pick up a used trans "with no grinds" 90,000 miles on, so we'll see about that.
I have to mod the BOV to hold more than 17psi, i'll try to knock that out this week end.
Downpipe should arrive by Wed and i'll get the rest made hopefully by next Fri.
My palm pilot is screwed up so i can't log my runs and i still have no way to tune. My last past was with out any afc or anything. I'm getting pretty fed up with this palm pilot logger BS and i'm ready to buy dsmlink. I don't have the money for it but i'm willing to put it on a card to just be done with this. Right now i have no way of monitoring my engine and i don't want to play around with this junk any more. I had issues with my M105 palm with the battery dieing and then i would loose the program after 5 min. Now my brand new Palm M125 you have to reset the palm so that the cursor calibration is right, but you loose the program. So i have to hotsync it and when i hotsync it to get the logger program back on, the cursor calibration is off again and i can't get in to the logger program.
Phil i didn't want to tell you this, but i do have my eyes set on a larger turbo down the road. I would first like to push my 14b pretty good though with out taking out a ton of weight as you have with your featherlight car. I want to push the 14b in to the low 12's with some more weight mods and some tuning and suspension work. Then once i've reached that goal (and hopefully have some money) i would like to purchase another turbo which will shove me in to the 11's and possibly a high 10 well tuned on race gas. If these were not my long term goals for the car i wouldn't bother with dsmlink, but my set up will change and i would like to be able to use the link to help me max out the 14b set up and utilize the stutter box etc. One other thing i have to keep in mind is that my compression is about 100-110 across the board so before the new turbo and maybe even before low 12's i'll be doing a refresh. I'd like to do it over the winter to minimize down time though. I'm hoping that if i make it to E-town for the shoot out maybe one of the vendors will have dsmlink on sale. I'm anxious to get back to the track but if i'm not even able to do a pretrack test run and see if i'm knocking, i feel guilty for pushing it to the limit. Give me a heads up if your coming down to capitol and check their website since they have been having a lot of different events between Fri-Sun's and i think i even saw a test in tune on there last Sat? Keep it up Phil,
Travis

Damn.....all that palm pilot stuff sounds like a pain the ass. I still to this day have never logged one run! In the final quest for the last bit of power that will be a must. I have no idea if the engine is knocking or not, if it is, noone's been listeningROFL

If I do go to E-town it will be to spectate. Too bad, because I'd like to get some runs in there. It will be pretty hot down there anyway. I'll let you know if I'll be going by the end of this weekend.

DSMlink would be cool for sure. I'd like to try that out someday! Simple is the name of the game for me though. When I hit that next brick wall, I will definitely consider that stuff. No biggie about wanting to go bigger turbo. I don't expect that you'd keep a 14b on there too long. If my talon was still a street car I'd want a 35r or something on there when all that extra heft.

No real updates to report. Removed some guages I'm not using, old A/F guage, rear diff temp, and the combination switch on the steering column since I have no headlights, front signals, or cruise. Just another thing that's in the way and if it weighs 1.5 lbs. I'm happy with that.

Gotta do a bit of work to the doors before bolting them on. Depending on how quick that happens I'll work with the rear 1/4 lexan. Those windows aren't super heavy I don't think but every pound counts now. So, if it saves 10 lbs. total that would be significant.

Control arms have not come through yet, I was supposed to meet the guy this morning at 10 and have not been able to get in touch with him. I may just forget it at this point.

So, that's it.

Good luck gettin the laser in check. I'd like to see you hit 12.0 before you give up the 14b if you can. Let me know if I can help anyway. Talk to you soon.

Wow so all of this success and you have no way to monitor your engine? Remind me again, but do you run straight C-16 every time you race? I'm hoping to hit atleast a 12.40 before i pull off the 14b. But if i'm able to refresh then engine back to stock compression and if i'm able to purchase some light weight components then maybe 12 flat would be doable. IE: carbon fiber hood, light weight battery, manual steering rack, lighter tank/cell, maybe some lexan for rear window to start, light weight seat and harness etc.

I think i'm going to have a hard time getting someone to come in and work for me on a Sunday but i'll talk to my boss if no one can and see what we can do. I'll be really bummed if i miss this shoot out.

I went and got a few small things i needed to do the high boost mod to the bov and i have to swing by the garage and see if i have the right tools to complete the repair. As for the exhaust and transmission, those time will take care of but i'm excited to get the exhaust done next week. I've been wanting to do a semi strip of my doors lately but the heat has been keeping me inside. I think eventually i want to make some sheet metal door panels, but i'm hesitating on removing the side impact beams from the doors since i still drive the car on the street and don't have a cage.

As for the palm troubles, pnuemo tried to help out, but no luck. I waited weeks to get all of the correct wires and hardware to make a logger set up for the car and only used it a couple times and now this major problem. Guess that's part of dsm's though.
Keep us updated, i'm running out of build threads to read on here as i am home durring the days and sometimes nights as well.

Wideband o2......that's it. Yes, nothing but VP C16.

Definitely don't remove the side impact beams for street use!

Good luck with getting the Laser back up to snuff. It's all a pain in the ass sometimes!

I'd like to have a logger set-up. Well, I have one, it's just the seat of my pants!

Someday I may graduate to all that, now would probably be a good time though!

I will definitely keep you posted. Minimal work on the car this weekend. Still tidying up the dash area wiring and then it's on to the doors.

Got these in the mail today. Hopefully they will help a bit with heat. Look to be real nice pieces...

Personal experience says the intake mani one works well, just from today taking my car down the road and feeling how hot the intake mani was! My old car with the heat barrier gasket, the intake manifold never got that hot to the touch, even running 19 psi on the 14b compared to this being stock!

Well, that's good to know. Anything to help at this point. Again, though, this is an affordable purchase, keeping with my low-budget type of build. It was well into the 80's the last time at the strip and the car just never cooled. Everything was warm or HOT to the touch, even with an hour or so resting. I did not "ice" anything. I used to have spray bottles of water submerged in ice to hit the intercooler with. Intercooler was COLD at the start of runs. I haven't done that in years though. Sure it would help a tad, but, I think more accurate results are produced by just running it the way it sits on any given day.

That's my small update!

I really believe in the intake mani phenolic spacer. The throttle body spacers not so much, but can't hurt.

Cool.........we had them for Subaru cars at a shop I used to work at locally but they were made of a different material, a more proprietary phenolic type deal. I guess anything that isn't aluminum will work though.

I'll take any advantages I can gain, however small!

Polk tubular control arms...at last!

How much do they weigh? Aren't there supposed to be mounts for the sway bar?

Don't have the exact weight yet, but I was told 11 lbs. lighter than stock per side. So a total unsprung weight loss of 22 lbs.

He did make them with mounts for the swaybar, but these were the "drag" race version.

Also, I just removed my front swaybar anyway. When and if I convert the car to road race status, I still wont put the front sway back in. It's really not needed with the coilovers anyway....

I'll try to get the exact weight soon.........

Finally got the lighter doors on the car. I'm not sure what the exact weight savings is but my guess is in the 75 lb. range. They are gutted stock doors with the window(still glass) fixed mounted on the passenger side and a roll up window(still glass) on the driver side. A significant drop in weight anyway. I don't plan to put in the Polk control arms as I don't have time to get the car re-aligned. I do not plan to put the lexan rear 1/4 windows in either this year. So, that will leave a bit of weight reduction for next year if I end up doing some more drag racing. Lexan door windows and carbon fiber doors sure would be a nice Christmas present!!! Probably won't happen though!

So, I've got to finish getting door handles and the moldings on and the doors are done.

Last, time to get the chip in and wire the stutterbox. Those will be the two differences for this last outing of the season. I'm eager to see what that will do. Not to mention it won't be in the 80's like July, so maybe a bit more power as well.

October 16th is coming fast, hopefully it will be a great day!

Looking forward to the results! When I gutted my 1ga doors I removed 20 lbs per side, I then figured I could remove another 5 lbs per door. So a good 50 lbs is possible, plus removing the talon effects is a couple more lbs per side, not much but it all counts.

As I said before, hope you snag that record back! :rocks:

From personal experience from my car and our shop car the intake manifold gasket will burn through where the egt is. It gets to hot and burns right through and give you a nasty boost leak. I hope you have a better experience then we did. But we figure after 4 of them doing the same thing we would just use a stock one. Good luck, car is awesome. :thumb:

You're talking about the phenolic intake manifold spacer, right?
Did those cars still use EGR? Or was the EGR blocked off?

Just the regular heat barrier gasket. And one had block off and the other didnt. Im not gonna say what brand it was

Well that helps nobody at all. I'm confused about the egt though, what do you mean "it kept burning through where the egt is at"? I thought an egt probe was only on the exhaust manifold?
