Man i'm jealous for your galant. It looks really nice. Glad everything worked out well with all the maintenance.
Working on the talon with the parts you already have will give you something to do and something to look forward to. Keep it up Phil.
I can't have my pick-up being quicker than the VR4. I think I'll pick up a K & N too. Those factory style filters suck.Man i'm jealous for your galant. It looks really nice. Glad everything worked out well with all the maintenance.

Whelp, as great as the Galant is in physical condition......it has ended up needing some extended work. When I got the car, I thought it was pretty slow. Everyone said, "it's stock, 20 years old, and heavier than the DSM." Good points, BUT, I knew it should have had a bit more snap. It would pull nice on the highway over 4000 rpm only though. It was a slug from a stop, and on low rpm roll ons. Sometimes idle was super low and stalled here and there.
So, I could smell exhaust in the cabin, I knew I had a leak somewhere. The car felt slow to me and as if it took forever for the turbo to spool. I estimated a 16.0 1/4 mile time at best, maybe about 85 MPH. So, here's what was wrong and there will be some pics to follow:
1. ECU caps leaked--BAD causing some damage
2. ISC motor failed--seized in closed position
3. Exhaust manifold cracked in at least 3 places--could feel exhaust on the bottom of my hand at idle
4. Turbine housing is really cracked and chunks of iron are missing especially in the wastegate area--looks to be a result of a clogged Cat. There are cracks at the area where the housing clamps to the center section of the turbo
5. Injector seals leaking
6. Cat is clogged pretty good and powder falls from inside it
So, I've got a few repairs to make. Once you look at the pics it will be easy for you to see why the VR4 was so slow. Having trouble uploading.....

Phil I'm sorry to hear you found so many issues with this galant. I also understand that the talon takes your interest a lot more in the dsm world than the vr4, but this car actually makes sense for you right now. Family man that also wants a street-able car, you could do some basic mods to this and have a nice little cruise around car. Like your evo's but with out the payments!
Alright so to get there, we would need to fix up the issues at hand soon and for cheap. Hey, this is a dsm site right? Cheap is the name of the game.
1.I think if your ecu is leaking bad, the classifieds might be your best bet. I imagine you should be able to run a turbo 1g dsm ecu in that car with no issues. They go fairly cheap especially w/o eprom
2. Now a junk yard might yield cheaper results, but here's a site with quality ISCs: DSMISC Automotive (New ISC Supplier)
3. When i install my HX35 i'll be selling my friend my high flowing hot parts, i can see if he would donate or sell really cheap his turbine housing and stock manifold which i believe are both in good to fair shape
4. see #3
5. There are many place that have these but here is one: 1g 2g DSM Lower Injector Seals Mitsubishi Eclipse Talon : eBay Motors (item 380115258678 end time Apr-28-10 15:31:56 PDT)
6. I'm guessing with a clogged cat, you have three options. A) replace it with a stock cat B) replace it with a small straight pipe or C) replace it with a 3" straight exhaust.....but since you're looking for cheap you could probably use the stock converter i took off my laser

Heh heh, now we know whyTook it through emissions, no prob there, very clean.

^ OUCH
THat does not look healthy. Seems every time you buy a new "dsm" there are a ton of little maintenance things to do. Part of the process and nothing surprises me anymore, including holes in the floor where the previous owner tried to get to the rear diff bolts! Plug away at it, at least none of it is going to break the bank too bad other then the sensors.

Yeah just work at it as your time allows. Sounds like you got a hand on the situation. This car should run a lot better once you get it all freshened up!
Heh heh, now we know why
Hey hey, my brotha, long time no talk. Tracks are opening up, so my time in here becomes a bit more active. Had a rental at LVD today that got cancelled (good thing - too cold). ALMOST stopped off at the house today because I happened to be passing by (hoping wifey is doing good as well - say "hey" for me), but we'll hook up sometime.
Good to hear the new job has got you busy. Hours = cash = living

Wow! Phil that's the worst turbine housing I've ever seen! and congratz on the new job!
That seems to be the same thing anyone I've shown says after looking at it. It is wasted! Amazingly, the turbine wheel is ok and shaft play is normal. Thanks! It's going very well, but, as I've stated, it takes alot more of my time than I'd like, but it's an enjoyable environment which helps. Dear LORD. I have never seen an exhaust housing THAT bad.
I have never even heard of one being that bad. Phil that car is going to haul ass when your done.
Phil I read a bunch of your thread and looked at the galant pics. It all looks awesome man. We need to hang out sometime.
