[RESOLVED] Is My Timing Off?

Is that too far to advance?? I just bought this car so I didn't do the timing. I will get to TDC and re-shoot. But as it sits right now the car is going to have problems??? What do you think he was trying to do?

Don't think of this in terms of advanced or retarded. At this point just use a 1/2" extension on the crank sprocket to rotate everything clockwise until the cam gear dowel pins are at the 12 o'clock position then check for alignment of the timing marks on the cam gears.

It looks like you still have the lower timing cover on so you won't be able to see the marks on the crank (or oil pump and front balance shaft) but you can confirm for TDC by removing the spark plug from #1 cylinder and using a long screwdriver, wooden dowel, etc to see when the piston has reached it's highest point.

No offense meant if you already know this, just trying to clarify and be concise for you.:)

In the previous pic the cam gear dowel pins are not at 12 o'clock. Take another pic with the correct position of the dowel pins and repost.

Yeah I Was thinking that the timing is really off. Now being off this far would make the engine go kaboom when started?? So I also need to do a timing job on the talon as well as getting the right starter mounting plate(2G)??

While it's possible that the piston in cylinder 1 is at the top of it's travel in the picture shown (but not very likely) it is not at TDC compression stroke. The cams have to have their dowels pointing up to be at TDC compression stroke.

If you really checked the position of the piston in cylinder 1 for that picture then the crank pulley (harmonic dampener) looks like it's slipped on it's hub and needs replacement.

Yeah I Was thinking that the timing is really off. Now being off this far would make the engine go kaboom when started??
Kaboom? It doesn't look like that engine would start at all. It looks like the timing belt has already jumped and the valves may be bent.

Unless I'm not on the compression stroke. The pic was before I checked TDC, but when Put it on TDC, the marks went to the same spot. So I'll have to rotate it again before, I know for sure??
