I spun a rod bearing about a month ago.
This is my first time changing out a rod bearing.
I'm doing it from underneath the car, I took the oilpan off and everything seems to be accessible.
I had flakes of metal in the oilpan but I'm dirt poor so I'm going to try putting new bearings in and riding it out that way.
You guys have any tips or anything before I take on this task?

Anyone know the torque spec off of the top of there head and I'm buying the bearings from checkers for 40 bucks anyone have any other suggestions of where to get them? I do shop online.

I have a 4g63 in a 98 GST.

Check the vendors here stm, map, extreme psi, for parts. I would inspect the crank being poor sucks owning these things, just do it right the first time or else youll do it again and spend more money in the long run like anything in life. Inspect the crank to see if its been damaged at all.

ExtremePSI.com You need to check your crank. I bet you have a lot of metal shavings all through out your oil pump, and block. If you just replace the bearing im sure that you will have to tear it down a second time and you will waste time and money.

Yeah I'm sure I do, is there any alternatives to cleaning all of that stuff out other than a rebuild?

IF the bearing is actually spun than a new bearing won't fix it. The bore of the rod will be enlarged and the new bearing will just spin again.

Gonna have to inspect that crank, just spun a bearing this past fall, got my crank cut a new bearings. You can get another crank with bearings with a kit, or do what i did, i ran cut cranks before, holding up just fine. Make sure you get all the shavings out of the system or else youll be doing it again..

I'm not too sure if it spun, I just think I caught it pretty early. I'll go outside right now and take it apart and take a photo of the crank etc so you have a better idea of what I'm working. Here's a video, I never ran the car again after this. Lifter or rod? 4g63. - YouTube

This ^^^^^

The high to low spec for the big end of a con rod is .0007, yes seven tenths of one thousands of one inch.

Or about 1/3 the thickness of a sheet of notebook paper.

At this point, just park the car till you have a few hundred to do a stock rebuild.

You will need...
Gaskets, rings, bearings, oil pump and timing kit

Minumium machine work needed will be
check the big ends of the rods.
polish and/or grind the crank

You can "backyard" the rest

I've only been working on cars for about a year I apologize if I work you guys up a little.

Haha yeah I'm 19 and paying for college, a couple 100 isn't gonna work for me. If I get screwed by "seven tenths of one thousands of one inch" I must admit I will be a little upset.

Might be time to sell the car and buy a honda if you can't afford a few hundred dollars to fix it right.

Even if it didnt spin, chances are you need the crank turned. Sorry. I know exactly what it feels like, trust me. Its a drag.
edit: just watched video, you didnt spin bearing. Its got bad lifter tick but i could hear the knock in there a couple times. Your crank can probably be polished or cut, put new rods n bearings in and you could drive it. Atleast, that would be best case scenario, bare minimum. If i was tight on cash id try a new bearing and thicker oil. I mean, your screwed anyway.
Let me be clear: im not advocating a cheap job, the proper way is a complete top to bottome rebuild, but if he doesnt want to spend more than 100 dollars let him do it. See what happens. Just plan on replacing crank if you do spin the bearing or run it anymore, it doesnt take much to damage them if they are high mileage or have been worked before.

I have been spinning wrenches for, ohh about 27 years, and an engine machinist for 20

I am not worked up, What you have asked has been asked before here before.

A quick search whould have pulled it up, and you would have read this same info.

But you are going to do what you want to do.

I wish you the best on it Hopefull you will not get screwed by .0007

I really do appreciate all the advice, the lecturing not so much. Thank you to those of you who still have a bit of sincerity left in you.

I really learned a lot today. I know I could have searched it but everyone has a different scenario and I wanted to make sure I was getting the correct information. Again thanks a lot guys I should be able to figure out the rest to this problem on my own.

I think what caused it to go out in the first place is over revving.

Good luck! I'm poor too LOL. And I'm kind of jammed up with my car atm. Spent a few hundred bucks changing timing belt + water pump and stuff and dropped in my parts car motor only to have its headgasket fail.

It also appears to be contaminating the oil pan with fuel. So I'm close to the point of parking it in the back yard and leaving it there, but I love my car, so I really don't want too. Running out of options, patience and money though :(
