Is there any way to get less of a chance to crankwalk. Is there anything i should replace, anything to do while im driving, anything to do to put less stress on the crank ( I know not to beat on it, but anything else)? Also curious how often people get it.

Very seldom do people get what actually is "crankwalk". Most of the time it is misdiagnosed from the people who havent done the correct troubleshooting proceedures and just throw that term out! Crankwalk can happen to ANY vehicle with a crankshaft. The 95-96 model 4g63 are more "prone" for it for the fact that the thrust bearings werent designed very well.. But remember ANY VEHICLE WITH A CRANKSHAFT CAN GET THIS!!!
As far as prevention, heavy clutches can heighten you chance of this happening due to having so much pressure on the thrust bearing on initial startup and no oil present. If you do have a heavy clutch, well even if not you can disconnect the clutch saftey swtich on your clutch pedal so your not putting force on the crankshaft on startup. Doing this can also be dangerous..

1g or 2g? 7 bolt 6 bolt?

7 bolt sorry man didn't say

Why is it dangerous to do that?

It potentially could be. Ya know if someone who isnt aware that you have that disconnected and turns the key your car would lurch forward and depending if something or someone is in front of it.. Because there wouldnt be that clutch saftey switch there to not let your ignition engage.

Agreed. I disconnected my clutch safety swith so I do not need to engage the clutch on startup. I don't let anybody else drive my car so I don't really need to worry about telling people about it.

If you don't do your own oil changes and what not, BE SURE to advise them about the safety switch disconnection.

I agree with crash, crankwalk is way too over hyped and the percentile that actually do get it is really small, you have a better chance of a bee flying through your windshield, going in your eye and stinging your brain causing you to crash...LOL

ya this crankwalk thing is too over mentioned. Though it can happen theres a very small chance that it can. You can rebuild the bottom end with a new crank and can still get crankwalk its happened to many people so you really cant prevent it just happens. Just disable your clutch switch and dont let anyone else drive it and your good

Or you ccould just make sure to let people know have the car in neutral before starting it. I mean everyone should make sure any manual transmission isnt in any gear other neutral on a startup..

As, for crankwalk can happen on any other car.. this may be true but I havent heard of anyone other than DSM's experience this.

Just Cross your fingers everytime you drive! my best advice. :p

Ok, now back to putting together my bottom end. Damn Crankwalk!

LOL good luck. I don't know what to do. i think i plan on gettin a 4g63 and hoping for the best.

Magnus did some research on this about the oil squirters on the 7 bolt sticking open and bleeding oil pressure off the thrust bearing at start up creating accelerated thrust wear. The 6 bolts have a different style squirter fed different than the 7 bolts. The 7 bolts get fed right off the main bearing oil supply galley. There is some merit to this idea because the thrust bearing is fed from bleed off from the mains. That and the different design of thrust bearings between the 6 bolt, 95-96 style 7 bolt (which mitsi redesigned basically admitting a problem with them), and the newer multiple thrust bearing. The clutch safety switch is a plus. Forged pistons and no squirters. 6 bolt block or 7 bolt that accepts the newer thrust. If its stick don't push start. All are good ideas for insurance but yeah it can happen to any engine even autos. My 95 did it after 147k miles.

Crankwalk has been known to happen around 60-90k miles (No way an out-of-spec crankshaft can last longer than that, per say). It shouldn't be an issue, but if you're worried, check your crank play, and put your mind at ease.

This is silly. If someone is starting your car they're either going to hold the clutch or brake because they think they have to.

If you're worried about it, which is silly, you could just leave the trans neutral.

That's all fine and good until you get in a hurry and forget. My car had the switch disconnected when I bought it. I didn't think much of it, I always start it in neutral anyways. Until 1 day at an autox when one of my friends put it in gear without me knowing (I had left it sitting in neutral). I was in a hurry and of course the one time I don't wiggle the stick to make sure it's in neutral... Yep, lurched forward and almost ran someone over. As soon as I got home that night I connected the switch.

My 99 gsx got crankwalk....61xxx miles on here....

When I got the car, it was in pieces....I rebuilt it etc...150 ish miles in to the rebuilt motor everytime I would press the clutch in it would rattle like a tob...(tob'ings rattle when the clutch IS NOT pressed in for those that dont know....)

I thought it was a tob myself...and with it only being me working on the car is was difficult to try and figure it out....Car was running great one night, pressed the clutch in shifted to 3rd....motor immediately dies...ok???

I know I have air/fuel last on the list was spark....no spark...hum....Swapped out coil packs, ecu's, and Transistor packs with a buddy....his started right up....The only 2 things left for a 2g for spark is the CAS (Cam angle Sensor) and CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor)...

CAS was good as I tested it....the CPS was dead.....I replaced it....Car fires right up.....

I go driving again I still get a rattle here and there...I figure ahh screw it LOL...
50 miles later shuts off again....Shit....CPS Died again....Screw it 1g cas and 6 bolt swap harness now installed....Runs like a champ again....

Got about 240ish miles on rebuilt motor....everytime I press in the clutch car tries to die...I have to rev it while clutch is pressed in....dammit....Car shuts off a few times....I cannot start it with the clutch in...I tried....and I killed the battery trying....

Put a new battery in, not pressing the clutch, fires right up....I figure screw it stupid TOB I'm not pulling the tranny back out to install a new one....(again I thought is was a TOB at the time still)

I sell the car to a guy from the middle U.S. He takes it for a test drive..hes happy with it til we look for w/e the sound is coming from....He ask me to go in puch the clutch....the entire harmonic balancer shifts over about 5/16" just from pushing in the pedal in about 1/4-1/3 of the way....I pressed it in all the way....Shifted over about 1/2" Car dies.....

Welcome to the world of Crankwalk.....Only 260ish miles on a rebuilt motor....Dammit....
The person I bought the car from never told me anything about the car and I guess the motor already walked on him....in I got a fubar'ed block.....What a bastard.....

Sounds to me like something wasn't done right.

Trust me it was all done right, and was all done by the book....I primed everything started right up on its first try....

0 major problems and only 1 minor oil leak..
From the passenger side of the head....where the factory 1g oil feed line goes....

I forgot to tighten the bolt to block it off...just drippd a few drops but thats it.... since its low pressure

OR swap a 99 7 bolt. Its split thrust bearing makes it less likely than the already .000000005% that your motor will walk.
