Not to publically announce my ness.

So I need spool and power..And Were blowing up this 14b for fun..;)

16 variant, or 18g variant is the question at hand.I also have not sent an email to stop that project yet..Kinda waited on your email..

IDK..I think 16g :( So that leaves still so many things topping off at a 20g..Hey If I had a different converter ,this wouldnt be an issue really. But there freaking pricey.

NO HOLSET.

Is this call of duty..Wheree my rubber knife..Or my rubber bullets..They wont harm you, but I bet that crap hurts.

I would say F it and go holset alll day long,I want to do something not so standard issue..True story, yesterday,I was emailing Justin..I thought ohh hey I'll try something new, and in my head all the math was worked out..Then I talk to ^this guy..And it seems like back to before square one even started.

SO THANKS FOR THAT.;)

I would call him a buzzkill. That doesnt seem to apply this time..LOL

So you think you know what your talking about,And these guys are so damm smart..It's rediculous.

Seriously though, if you want bigger than an 18g without having to do the extra fabrication and customization work, you're pretty much out of luck so far as I know. After the 18g, I believe the larger wheels are normally TD06 turbine driven and have to be swapped back to the TD05h turbine to be bolt on for us. Outside of that, you're going to be swapping manifolds to T3 style flanges.

+1.

Once you go up from an 18G, whatever compressor you use will likely work better paired to a larger turbine. The 20G is a fine example of this: less backpressure = lower EGT's, less knock, easier tuning, higher airflow production when mated to a TD06H turbine over a TD05H....although it comes at the cost of spool. Once you break into the 4000-4200rpm threshold with a 20G, you may as well use a HX35 and appreciate the ability to generate peak airflow in the lower 50's with the bolt-on housing....above what any standard 20G or T04E50 variant of yesteryear wishes it could produce.

16 variant, or 18g variant is the question at hand.

I'd say 16g/18g variants are pretty "standard issue". Everyone and their mom has a 16g. The 18g, 20g, and Hybrids are less common, but still not hard to come by. How many people have a Cummins diesel turbo bolted to their 4-banger? Better yet, how many turbo's can spool in the 3k range and produce 50 lbs/min without being ball-bearing, billet wheel, or VVT?

Just get it over with, go Holset. :D

I think 3k range is optimistic...... very optimistic.. My HX40 spools 22psi by 4050 RPM though:thumb: With a little light smoke puff after each shift :S

ROFL

Could you be a little more blunt, please? That made me laugh for some reason...

I think I get what he is saying though. I think what he is getting at is if you are constrained on space for the run, say each running light to light, or an 1/8th mile, or a 1/4, and how they would respond to such scenarios. Power wise, the HX wins, period... But if it has to produce that power in an 1/8th, I am fairly sure the HX also comes up quicker, unless you are referring to a TD05H-20g hybrid. In that case, I have no idea. Which brings me to the next response...

Why would a 3k range spool be optimistic? If your HX40 is spooled that far by 4k, and the HX35 is smaller, it stands to reason it will be spooled quicker.

Right-on.

TD05H 20G spool is 3700-3800ish; HX35 is around 200-300 later depending on cams, boost level, supporting mods, yadda-yadda....so if you're an 1/8th racer, you have an auto trans, or if you shift like a grandma, the 20G is going to be more beneficial.

...if you shift like a grandma, the 20G is going to be more beneficial.

Exactly why I am passing on the Holset until I rebuild my transmission... I have powdered my synchros, so even Grandma has a lead on me as I wait to shift into 2nd. :banghead:
My 18g compensates for this quite nicely from 2nd through 3rd with the quick pick up though. It may not flow as much air overall, but it does start pulling sooner. For daily driving and quick bursts out cruising, it is a more manageable turbo with a wider range in the turbo's prime efficiency at lower rpm... But given more than a few city blocks, the Holset would start pushing like a bulldozer and slingshot from behind with that bottle rocket whistle, and wouldn't let up because it efficiency is in its prime range until our motors top out.

It's mainly about what you want the car to do, and the conditions in which you'll be using it.

hey justin, my hx40 or well, the exhaust smokes in high rpm boost, you think with my setup i could benefit from a small bit more restriction then the -4an? no shaft play, 2000 miles, oil pressure probably gets 10psi more then it should be. it's light blue smoke right before i shift but not before. prob at like 6k-7k rpm in also wondering valve seals though :hum: could also be comming from the open dump.

Sounds a lot like valve seals, smoker. 10psi isnt really all that much over the recommended, you have balance shafts eliminated and its only 10 psi over at wot? I'd imagine it would be much more unless you ported the hell out of the ofh. how did your exhaust ports look when you last pulled the manifold? I needed valve seals badly, and mine had oily goo caked to the walls and shit into my manifold runners as well.

could also be comming from the open dump.

The wastegate is pre-turbine so if you're getting smoke out of the dump tube it's not the fault of the turbo. :thumb:

I can't see a new HX40 with no shaft play and a 12AN drain giving you any turbine seal issues. Double-check your crankcase ventilation setup.

Bud.... You can always go HX-35 :thumb:

I've told you before and I'll tell you again, Evo IX turbo!!

Mike I've went over the x compressor wheel with Justin and another turbo guy..ITs just not gonna be as badass as we thought..So thats pretty much out now.

Hey thanks for the opinions guys I appreciate it..

Still no holset though..

But.Maybe i'll go 18g,I know someone who has one sitting on their shelf right now.;)

So thats pretty much where i'm at, at the moment.

I believe he was initially referring to the Evo IX turbo, which is not too wonderful of a suggestion. Reverse-rotating means a difficult install, and at the end of the day it's STILL a 16G. Evo X turbos are standard-rotating and easily upgradable to a 20G. :thumb:

The factory Evo X compressor is quite-comparable to our Evo III 16G, but having a smaller inducer definitely makes it less-potent than an off-the-shelf Evo III 16G. Great upgrade for someone who is just outgrowing a 14B but doesn't want to drop $900 on a new Evo III. The downside is it has to be custom-built as there are no DSM-style compressor covers pre-cut for an Evo X compressor.
